To add more explanation, if you poisoned it while it was already poisoned, the old poison condition is erased and the new one is put on it. This normally won't matter, but if you used some efect that put 2 damage counters on the Pokemon between turns insteaad of one and poisoned it, it will only receive one damage counter between turns.
