Discussion Good Partner for Yanmega BREAK

Wanting to make a Yanmega Break deck, not sure what all to run with it, maybe Ariados for poison, but what would be another good attacker?

Moved from the TCG Help & Advice to the TCG Competitive as the OP is looking for subjective advice worthy of discussion. ~bbninjas

Personally I'd want to try and find a cheap attacker to run alongside in case somebody shuts off Yanmega's abilities. As Yanmega is built around attacking for free you could pretty much run anything there.

Why not the Shiftry from Steam Siege? It works well with Forrest of Giant Plants, Judge, and requires a single DCE attachment to attack. Yeah, it's another stage 2, but it works well and doesn't need an ability to funtion.

If we go into Rotation, maybe Zebstrika could be a nice partner as a counter against Mega Rayquaza. Another Idea is Flareon, so that you can add Fire typing to normal Yanmega to counter Mega Sceptile.

A little funsies deck you could try is combining Yanmega with Glalie EX. If you use Judge, both you and your opponent's hand gets reset to 4 cards. Using that you could either attack with Yanmega for no energy or attack with Glalie for 150 damage with 1 water and 1 DCE

Glailie is not worth it. Without Muscle Band (which is rotating out), it can't hit for 170. It must be able to KO a normal EX to have any use. I would use a cheap attacker that cover Yanmega's weaknesses (like how Victini EX was used in Seismitoad to counter VirGen)

Glalie-EX could be an interesting partner for Yanmega with Team Magma's Secret Base, actually. Yanmega is your cheap, non-EX 2-hit/clean-up attacker, and Glalie-EX is your potential 1-hit KO attacker. A bit like a tool-box - you choose which attacker is best in whatever situation. I could see Absol ROS as a nice support inclusion, allowing for some damage counter shuffling to hit those EXs with 180 HP or higher. Mega Glalie-EX could be teched in for a bit of bulk, and to take down those nasty Megas. Another option is Ariados, which doesn't poison Yanmega and compliments nicely with Mega Glalie-EX.

I'm noticing that yanmega is too easy to foil with hex maniac. Even though it attacks for free, it only hits 120 maximum also. I'd think a partner might overshadow. I've also noticed it's hard to always have the 4 cards in hand and chain attackers.

If you are going to try yanmega break, I recommend trying raichu and ariados. An Archie's swampert or Maxie's gallade engine would've been solid for it but battle compressor rotates.

Yanmega is the partner. He's too weak to function as a deck's main attacker, folds to Ability lock, and he's way too weak to a late-game N for my liking. Try him alongside Mega Sceptile (or anyone really).

I really like Yanmega and I'm trying to build a deck that showcases its usefulness as well. To help deal with ability lock, I was looking at cards that can help you manage your hand size when you have to use Pokemon Ranger as your supporter instead of Judge. Shaymin, Octillery, maybe possibly Empoleon would be good partners. Worst part is you can't get around Hex Maniac no matter what. I'm worried though, it could get to a point where you have to take up deck space on cards that cover Yanmega's shortcomings.

Another issue is you have to consider when you should stop playing cards, as you have to guarantee having 4 in your hand to benefit from having Yanmega, which can feel restrictive.

On those turns that you can't get around ability lock, it would help to have something like GolduckB to shuffle energy around as needed. If AromatisseXY was still standard, you could make a useable Fairy Transfer toolbox deck as well.

But that's assuming you don't have another solid attacker that you can just accelerate some energy onto. The beauty of Yanmega is no retreat cost or specific energy reqs, so you could probably invest in something like ZygardeEX and Strong energy and retreat when you're ready. Something tells me you'll have a pretty easy time no matter what you pair with Yanmega, unless there's another deck that deals gobs of damage besides MegaRay.

IMO the best combination for yanmega is vespi/eeveelutions. I have been able to get a consistent t1 yanmega through the use of forest. Having eeveelutions allows you to counter mega ray and sceptile. Even if they run hex, by turn two I've been getting a solid 100 to 140 damage out of vespiquen, which when damaging for weakness with eeveelutions hits pretty hard. This is THE most consistent deck I have ever run.

Hope this helps,

Zaratrath

@bbninjas Glalie EX can't 1-hit a 170 HP EX without muscle band (rotating). It also can't 1-hit low HP EXs if they have FFB.
With Team Magma's Secret Base, Ariados or other methods of damage residue, Glalie-EX could be made to hit those high numbers. I'd recommend Lysandre picking or a Mega Glalie tech for particularly high HP effects.

I do think that Yanmega could go neatly with the Eeveelutions. That's quite a vast number of Weakness being hit there, including things like Mega Sceptile-EX that would be difficult to take down otherwise.

Not with FFB.

As someone who played the old Plasma Eeveelutions deck, I can tell you that there were too many Pokemon. If Yanmega's is in the deck, it would become even worse.
I still think Yanmega's best purpose is for some slow deck, like Primal Groudon

Also, if you're going to try and use Yanmega on his own (or as the main attacker), don't try to be cute and run zero Energy. Running Energy and paying for your attacks just like the rest of us is the only way to prevent yourself from saying go every turn. Having Energy also gives you another card to play out of your hand. You don't have to run a ton, just a few. As long as one of your Yanmega has enough to attack normally, then you're just one Lysandre away from solving your Garbodor problem.

As was mentioned, there's no way to get around Hex and it's everywhere so suck it up and play some Energy.
