Biweekly Haiku Contest III

Rules and Entry Requirements:

1.) Post here saying that you want to enter and you’ll be accepted. Please note that the limit for entries is twelve per contest and signup ends once that tally has been met or the deadline for signups and submissions has passed.

2.) Participation requires simply that all entrants write a three-line short poem in haiku format (the alternating "Five-Seven-Five Syllables" per line set up) to be voted upon once all entries have been submitted (which will also be copy-and-pasted into this post when I have the time to do so). All submissions are final, but the only restrictions are that participants have until the second Thursday after this post has been made to submit their poems here. The fan fiction moderator may scrutinize the quality of poems and completely unintelligible submissions might be automatically disqualified; however, you will not be penalized for occasional small errors.

3.) All writings much have bear some hinting to the select theme for each contest, just to keep things somewhat even. The theme for this contest will be Science and Technology. After all submissions have been made or the deadline has passed, a poll will be created that will be open for all members of PokéBeach to vote for their favorites in. Voting for your own poem will not be permitted and also be closely monitored to prevent cheating (basically, if I see that you’ve voted for your own, I’m just going to dock you a point).

Participant List
1.) Bippa201
2.) P0KEVORTEX
3.) Syneptus
4.) Dark Void
5.) Darkvoid57
6.) Myself

Haiku List (in order of authors entered contest)

1.) Wanting
I would love a cure
Stop the pain, the suffering
Let's stop cancer's pain

2.) Welcome
Battling and brawls,
safariblade's April Fools,
Welcome to the Beach.

3.) Haiku of the Environmentally Apathetic Generations
What makes you think that?
Tech IS better than nature,
and who needs those trees?

4.) The Last Frontier
Tons of smoke and fire.
The rocket's roar in our ears.
Let's see it again.

5.) SPAAAAAAAAACCCEEEE
The bright lights above
Flickering like a beacon
The Final Frontier

6.) Freedom From Biohazard
Contagions spread fast,
person-to-person. Thank God
we have new treatments.

Final notes: I’m still accepting suggestions for future contest themes. To date, I’ve been trying to use ones not related directly to Pokémon just so things don’t seem too redundant since it’s easy to burn through them given how diverse the franchise is.

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

I didn't get any points in Round 2. So I gotta redeem myself here.

I'm in.

Wanting
I would love a cure
Stop the pain, the suffering
Let's stop cancer's pain

I don't claim to be an expert poet, so I'm not sure how contractions affect the syllable count.

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

It happens to the best of us, Bippa, so don't get down on yourself. The trick is trying to write stuff you know people can relate to or at least are going to enjoy (which in and of itself posses quite a challenge).

Anyways, you're added.

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

Bumping for the purpose of posterity. Hoping more people join soon.

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

Count me in!

Welcome
Battling and brawls,
safariblade's April Fools,
Welcome to the Beach.

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

Count me in...

Haiku of the Environmentally Apathetic Generations
What makes you think that?
Tech IS better than nature,
and who needs those trees?

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

...and updated! Hopefully we'll have more participants by the weekend or so. If we have less than five by next week, I may enter with one of my own haiku and reduce the voting allowance down to two or maybe even one since I want to have some sort of spread and don't want people having to double up on their votes (if that makes any sense).

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

*obligatory bump*

Hoping more people take part in this. I'm a little pressed for internet time this coming week and am going to be semi-active this weekend because it's the season closer for a campground I usually camp at during the summer months. I may come back with an entry of my own sometime in the next few days if not a lot of people enter before the deadline, but that still remains to be seen.

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

The Last Frontier
Tons of smoke and fire.
The rocket's roar in our ears.
Let's see it again.

There is my entry. Its the first haiku I've written so I don't expect it to be very good.

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

And updated, finally. Sorry for the delay, I just hadn't had a lot of wi-fi access lately to properly update things.

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

*Bump*

Final call for any last minute entries. Voting will begin around noon CDT tomorrow and run through Sunday like last time. If no more people enter by then, I'll be cutting the voting allowance down to two votes per person to keep things fair.

SPAAAAAAAAACCCEEEE

The bright lights above
Flickering like a beacon
The Final Frontier

Title is Portal 2 reference.

Good luck to everyone

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

Alright, I've decided to enter one of my own haikus on a whim to even out the entry amount. Entries will still be taken for about another hour, but sometime after noon I'll create a poll.

Freedom From Biohazard
Contagions spread fast,
person-to-person. Thank God
we have new treatments.

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

Voting is now open for everyone. Contestants cannot vote for their own, which applies to me as well since I'm in now. Don't worry, I've already cast my votes and am just going to leave this sit until Sunday around noon when I get final results. ;)

RE: Haiku Contest III (Entries/Submissions taken starting now!)

*Minor Bump*

I just want to make sure this gets noticed a little more before tomorrow. Voting will still be open through noon, but I'm impressed by the turnout nonetheless (even though mine hasn't gotten any votes yet).

RE: Haiku Contest III (Congrats, Bippa!)

And, voting is closed! Congrats, Bippa201! Your poem won with Darkvoid57's coming in second and P0KEVORTEX's in third!

The next contest will start either later today or sometime tomorrow depending on when I get a chance to make the thread. Same drill as before. This thread will stay open until discussion stops.

Yes! Thanks everyone.

I was struggling to come up with an idea for this round. For those of you who don't know, one of my closest friends was diagnosed with bone cancer, and she ended up being the inspiration for this haiku.

Now lets see if I can win two in a row. :D

Science and Technology should've been the easy one actually. Given the vast array of subjects you could have done instead, Bippa, you actually chose a better one since it was inspired by something that effects a lot of people, not just your friend.

I knew that, and that was why you got my vote. ;D
It was certainly touching, and it seemed rude not to vote for it. :p
