So I started playing pokemon tcg and vg when they first arrived in the US I still play the vg but stopped playing the tcg when yugioh came out, now that I have kids of my own who recently showed interest in the tcg I am looking for help getting them into the game and maybe into competitive play as my play was more on the casual side when I did play heck I remember having fun with it maybe I'll join em

Moved from the TCG Competitive Play to the TCG Player Help & Advice as the OP is asking for help. ~bbninjas

Anyways, what type of help are you looking for in particular? Are you looking for some tips in revealing the game to your kids? Some information about the 2016 formats?

Tips on revealing to the kids and how to get them excited about it, as far as the 2016 format anything will hlp from Wat I've gathered so far is all my old cards aren't allowed

Well I think they aren't the last set I had was team rocket and the cards with the gym leaders pics in bottom right corner

In 2016, there is two competitive formats - Standard and Expanded. Standard is XY-on and Expanded is BW-on. Here is an official list of the legal expansions usable in each format. Team Rocket is not legal in either of these formats.

I suggest you try getting a few decks for your kids to play around with. One of the best packs that will teach them competitive power levels would be the Mewtwo vs Darkrai Battle Arena Deck, which features two 60-card decks containing many staple cards. There is also a Xerneas vs Yveltal Battle Arena Deck that contains multiple staples, but far less in comparison to the Mewtwo vs Darkrai kit. You could also try theme decks, although they are less powerful and have little use in the competitive scene.
