Okay I want to start playing the tcg game but I have a question can I mix like the first base set with some of the newer cards

It depends if you want to enter tournaments or just play with friends, if you just play with friends than it doesn't matter what cards you use but if you want to play in battle roads or other organized tournaments(other than some leagues) than you can only use cards from the holon phantoms set forward. If you are doing casual play with friends as such, it really does not matter what cards you use.

Tournaments rather, you will have to use the newer cards.
