Just for fun my wife and I played a game of Pokemon tonight. She used her Shiftry / Lickitung deck and I used an Arcanine / Eevolutions deck that I’ve been tinkering with. It’s my second game of the night and I’ve hand shuffled a few times after that, but before I play my wife I pile shuffle first in 15 piles then 4 & I hand shuffle once after each.
I start with Growlithe, Master Ball, Scott, Super Scoop Up, Vaporeon ex, Espeon ex, and Lanettes. No energy. I’m going first. I play Master Ball and get to choose between an Eevee and an Arcanine ex. I pick the K9 and pass. My wife has Licki active and puts a damage counter on Growlithe.
T2 I topdeck a K9 and sigh. Should have taken the eevee. Still no energy but I get to evolve. I ponder between Lanettes and the Scott and decide that I need energy first then bench since K9 can take an attack or two and I have SSU, so I play Scott and pick up 3 Mary’s Request. I pass. My wife Mentors for two seedots and another licki, attaches a rainbow to one of the dots & RCs it to Shiftry ex, then draws two.
T3 ... still no energy so I use Mary’s. I get no energy. However I do get an Eevee and I bench her and pass. My wife evolves her other seedot into Nuzzleaf and draws for two again.
T4. I get no energy. Worried that my wife could go aggo I finally Lanettes and bench a second Eevee & a Growlithe. Pass. I guess that, seeing my slow setup, my wife decides to play it safe and attaches a Rainbow to Nuzzleaf instead of the Shifty that already had one energy and draws two more cards. I’ll be honest; I have no idea why she did that. It pretty much lost the game for her.
T5. I Mary but get no energy. I’ve been though over a third of my deck and have seen NO energy. I run 15. WHERE IS MY ENERGY?!?! I evolve Espeon ex and send her candied Shiftry back to her hand then use Vaporeon ex to make her shuffle it back in. It takes 3 SSU but I get both exs back in my hand and bench the eevees again. I pass. She glares at me and evolves the Nuzzleaf into Shiftry. She has no energy so draws with Licki.
T6. I topdeck my 4th Mary’s and use it ... and I GET ENERGY! 3 React energy to be exact. I roll my eyes and attach to my active K9. I got another eevee in the draw too so I bench that and pass. My wife candies her dot into a second Shiftry ex but still doesn’t have that second energy for either Shiftry so she draws for two with Licki.
T7. I finally topdeck a Fire energy! I use the last Mary’s in my hand and get a Rainbow! I attach to K9 and repeat the Espeon / Vaporeon thing on the candied Shiftry making her shuffle it back in ... but this time I have Jolteon ex too. I overrun Licki and KO the benched dot.
From here it was pretty much downhill for her but I was just amazed that it took me SIX turns & 4 Mary’s to get any energy at all & SEVEN to get the Fire. I’ve had energy issues a time or two in the past but this was crazy!
