Heya guys.. need some "pro" help

First off, I appreciate any time that anyone here is willing to spend with me. I am active on a few other hobby boards & dealing with nubies isn't always fun. Here's my scoop.. I have been a LONG time MTG player (I am a 35) & I have a son who is just now getting into Pokemon. I have decided to learn the game & have been playing with him (quality time, all that jazz.. lol) & we've had a lot of fun with Pokemon. I'll be honest, being a Magic player, I am actually quite surprised how much fun Pokemon is... very cool! :) Anywho, his problem right now is that he is a couple of years behind all of the other kids in the neighborhood in terms of Pokemon collecting. We just moved to the neighborhood & he is finding that his starter decks (& a few bonus packs) are getting blown away by what the neighbor kids have. I understand that strategy is a HUGE factor & that a good player with average cards can beat a bad player with great cards.. the overall philosophy is duly noted.. but this being said, lets face it, without anything powerful, he is going into the games with a strike against him. For being 9, He actually plays a great game of MTG.. probably at a teenage level, so he is familiar with TCG strategies.. but just has very little to work with so far.

SO.. making a long story longer, lol.. what I am asking you guys is what you think some of the MOST powerful pokemon cards are right now.. both basics and stage cards. His birthday is coming up & with your help, I want to be able to buy him a few cards that makes his deck a bit more competitive in the neighborhood.. as well as give him some bragging rights... he's a good kid & deserves that. :) The question then is.. what suggestions do you guys have for cards? What are a few cards that would absolutely "wow" his friends & give him a mega punch?

Thanks in advance guys.. much appreciated.

~'Drew

PS The power source doesn't matter... more interested in getting the powerful cards first & then building a deck around them later.

Umm lets see.. I am no pro but i am somewhat veteran in this game so as i have seen some good cards are the following.. format is Card:Expansion

Rare Candy HP
Lucario DP
Empoleon DP
Electivire DP
Blissey MT
Garchomp MT
Magmortar MT
Magmortar LvX MT
Electivire LvX MT
Kricketune DP
Gallade SW
Gardevoir SW
Absol SW
Bannete SW
Magmortar SW
Electivire SW

There are a whole lot more but it will take a lot of time to list all good cards especially the trainer cards.. I'm sure the other members of this forum can help you in listing more cards

Boy, I appreciate your time man. Short of sounding like I want you guys to fill my shopping cart for me, what.. say.. 5 cards do you personally think are the most powerful and/or "biggest"? I know reducing a list down to 5 (after all the sets that have come out) is probably pretty tough.. but just shoot 5 my way that you'd probably pick off of the top of your head. :)

(Again, thanks)

Hmmm as a non-card player for around 5 years I'm probably not the best person to answer this but from my limited experience I found that 'ex' cards that require no evolution to use..."basic pokemon"...they may have to give the opponent two prizes on death but can turn battles with their extreme power compared to others of similar requirements to get into play! An example of this is:

Stage 2 'ex' pokemon when played in decks with the supporting base pokemon can be even more dominating than the basic one's but are harder to get out...but with the right trainer cards it can be easily done! A great example of this is:

To check them out properly just click on them. Hope that gives you some ideas.

I'd suggest buying him alot of packs... The fact that i hardly had any card is why i was no good at yu-gi-oh! back when i played it. Having more unique cards gives you an opertunity to test out what kinds of decks you like to play.... Of course, to suggest some decks to make: theres GG (Gardevoir SW and Gallade SW), Honchsoul (honchkrow lv X with Absol SW <sometimes run with Weavile SW> ) , Raivire (Electivire <any>+Raichu MT), Speed Empoleon (Empoleon DP+other water pokemon such as Cloyster, Mantine, etc.). He will probably be able to impress people with a good deck that focuses on Gardevoir lv x, Darkrai lv x, or Cresselia lv x but those decks are usually expensive to make unless you can get alot of trades in or already have much of the material.

Any lv x's, Carizard, Rare Pikachu, or legendary pokemon will usually impress kids under 11.

Take note that alot of the greater decks have powerful cards in multiples. I would suggest buying a good load (maybe a box) of the new upcoming set Great Encounters, To give your son an upper hand with the newer, more powerful cards.

Actually IMO GE is not that much of a good set.. I would go with secret wonders because not only are the rares good *coughgardylladecough* the uncommons there are very useful too and so are the trainers

Dude, Whaa?

Great Encounters, is well... a Great set! It holds plenty of useful trainers, and tons of powerful cards, holo, rare, OR uncommon.

Gardy and Gallade are pretty amazing, but they're just So, SO popular.

What i meant was the number
SW has these trainers
TGM roseanne bebes NM POV and vital cards for DWD and G&G and of course absol..

here's a great list
1. blissey mt [like 4 of them]
2.gallade sw [3 of them]
3.gardevoir sw[2 of them]
4.gardevoir sw lvl.x [2 of them]
5.rare candyhp and ge[lots of them]

On what think is that u should buy lots of the new packs like SW(secret wonders) and the newest pack GE(great encounters) they have very useful trainers like POV( Professor Oak's Visit), RR(Roseanne's Research),BS(Bebe's Search),TGM(Team Galactic's Mars), this r in SW(Secret Wonders) and for GE( Great Encounters) there is RC(Rare Candy) which it like the best card u need for a deck and other. But this packs where the ones that haver the much playable cards and stongest set. To me try to get him and ur self about 20 pack of each of these sets to help u out i ur deck building and having good cards to so of or trade. Hope u like what i said and hope u understand.

If you were only getting him 5 cards, here is what I would suggest:
3 Gallade Secret Wonders
1 Gardevoir Secret Wonders
1 Gardevoir Lv.X

That will make a good deck (if he has any of the prevolutions).

For people who just start should use a deck like G&G or Blissvire. When he gets better at the game he can make a creative deck with its own strategy.

G&G
POKEMON(20)
4-2-3-2-1 Gallade/Gardevoir
1-1 Weavile SW
4-2 Furret SW

TRAINERS(24)
4 x Plus Power
4 x Rare Candy
2 x Night Maintenance
3 x Professor Oak's Visit
4 x Bebe's Search(No more Celio's Network)
3 x Roseanne's Research
2 x Windstorm
1 x Warp Point
1 x Professor Rowan

ENERGY(16)
2 x Double Rainbow Energy
2 x Scramble Energy
6 x Psychic Energy
6 x Fighting Energy

Depends on how you play. Normal TCG strategies like swarming, T2, playing arcetypes, etc. So the strongest card would be the card best used in your metagame and that I don't know.
But listen to me. We have something in common. Like you said, you're experienced just with little cards. Now I'm facing the same situation as you and I'm using probably the cheapest decks in the world but I've pwned many.
Since you don't have much money use houndoom GE and go to your first tourney and see how well you play. Then improve.

A good starting deck would probably be RaiTric. It uses Raichu and Manectric from Mysterious Treasures, the cards aren't costy or too rare, and it's a fun deck to play.
The basic strategy of the deck isn't too complicated either, just play a bunch of energys onto your Raichu's and Manectric's, so your son won't have any problems strategy wise.
Hope I helped ^^

Really there no most powerful in my opinion. My sudgestion is to joina TCG team that allows anyone to join. There you will find more people who will be very happy to help

well 5 really good cards. well one of my faves is Charizard ex from
ex FRLG kinda hard to get especially now.
another good one is Garchomp DP from DP Mysterious Treasures.
lugia ex and milotic ex are both good to. hope this helped.

The best, most powerful, "wow" factor cards right now are the Gardevoir and Gallade form Secret Wonders. They're merely holo rares so they shouldn't be to expensive if you're buying them off somewhere like Ebay. Even the Gardevoir Lv.x which would typically be an expensive card isn't much on Ebay.

So I would suggest getting him 3 Gallade form secret wonders, 2 Gardevoir from secret wonders, and 1 gardevoir lv.x from secret wonders. If he has the pre-evolutions for these cards they can make a great deck on there own.
