Hi, I, like some others, do not have the game yet, but am starting to plan my team. I have heard many rumors that say that the use of HMs has been slimed down a ton. I was wondering how much that meant, specifically on HMs like surf or strength which seem to have come up a lot in past games. Would one need to have someone on their team with surf or strength, assuming they are willing to switch out a pokemon every once and a while for a route here and there, similar to HMs like waterfall or dive in the past? Thanks a ton!

RE: HM Usage

This generation, and the last one seem to have both slimmed down on the use of HMs, often times you'll see them just after you get them, but not ever again until Victory Road. After the defeating the 7th gym, I have used only one HM, Surf, and I've only used that once. You should be fine switching out Pokemon for a route to use the HMs and shouldn't need to work the HMs into your team.

RE: HM Usage

Surf and Waterfall are really the only necessary ones (I think?). However, Cut gets you important items at times, and Strength is extremely helpful for opening up shortcuts. Rock Smash is no longer an HM (thank goodness). Then of course there's Fly.

I highly recommend catching a Hawlucha. It learns Fly, Strength, Cut, and Rock Smash. So even if you don't want your pokémon clogged with HMs, having this one guy can open every path in the game. Surf and Waterfall aren't bad moves, and you could probably teach them to whatever Water type you were planning on using (I taught them to Blastoise).

RE: HM Usage

I didn't beat the game without Surf and Strength in one area but it may have been able to be done without them..? Either way, they were definitely not needed the whole game.

dmaster out.

RE: HM Usage

You'll miss out in a lot of TMs and rare Items if you don't use Surf to explore Azure Bay and the waters off Route 8. And likely deeper into the game, but I haven't made it that far yet.

Thanks. This helps a ton as I'm trying to use an all psychics team and I learned that Malimar can't learn surf and...yeah, I don't want to switch anyone out. So, thanks!

You could always use Starmie. It actually has good stats too.

Can' someone just make a list of all the Route/Caves you need certain HMs, Flash and Rock Smash in?
