Hey guys!

Do you guys remember any base-set archetypes? (With Jungle/Fossil cards included) I would really like to know what was popular back then. Alls I can think of is Charizard/Heymaker, but thats it. Thanks a bunch.

Well, I'm not sure, but I know that many people focussed they're decks on Basic Pokemon. I know that the decks probably used a lot more energy and less trainers.
I would say Blastoise would have been popular, due to the awesomeness of its Poke Power.

This is all speculation, as I was very young and one of about 2 who knew how to play at my school, so I know all about the cards, but am ignorant to the competitive side.

The three major archetypes of Base Set were these:

-Haymaker

-Rain Dance

-Barrier Swap

Barrier Swap was a genius combination of Dratini and Alakazam. Dratini had a Pokemon Power that made any damage done to it do 10 damage instead of it's regular damage. Alakazam would then move that 1 damage counter to something else, like Chansey, so that Dratini could continue to knock out the opponent's Pokemon, be it very slowly. IMO, it was, and still is, the best archetype created.

Which Dratini was this? I only know of Base Dratini from the original Base Sets...

But...

Where's the Poke-Power that makes all attacks used against it 10?
Sorry to make such a big deal out of this, but I'm confused by what you mean.

It was Erika's Dratini from Gym Heroes.

Oh, my bad, that's not the right one. That isn't a valid archetype since it wasn't out since Base Set. Well, for the third one, I'd say Charizard. He was good at the time.

Of course, God I own that card and I didn't get that.
But I thought he was talking about Base set stuff, which was the first 4 sets, they're the original sets I believe.

Haha, Thats fine.
Please excuse me for not thinking Erika's.
Anyways, as for other cards/combos that were popular, I think Chansey was popular for being such a tank, as well as Basic.
Trainers weren't quite a big a deal as they are now (with supporters and all) but they had quite powerful trainers, such as Professor Oak, Bill, Lass, Imposter Professor Oak (one of my favourites) and several others, although cost was higher (Discard 2 Cards for one in the discard for Computer Search), so those were also pretty staple.
