Ho-oh Rebirth Engine (Ho-oh EX/Beautifly) BW-on

Where does Ho-oh fit in today's meta? What about tomorrows? Conceptually, no where... unfortunately for this big rainbow phoenix, no one uses multiple basic energies in decks anymore, or ever really. But this fluffy bird has inspired me. Note, this is a very bare bones list, any techs that can and probably should be added will come later during playtesting phase.

Alright, so here's the decklist:

Pokemon
3 Ho-oh EX (DGX)
4-1-3 Beautifly (DGX)
SuBTotal: 11

Items/Supporters/Stadiums
3 N
3 Juniper
3 Bianca

4 Ultra Ball
3 Energy Search
3 Pokemon Catcher
3 Rare Candy
3 Level Ball
2 Eviolite
2 Random Receiver
2 Pokemon Communication
2 Super Rod
2 Switch
SubTotal: 35

Energy
2{G}
2{W}
2{L}
2{F}
2{R}
2{P}
2{M}
SubTotal: 14
Total: 60

Strategy: Alright, due to the nature of Beautifly and Ho-oh's abilities, the list calls for some serious random energy, and a lot of it. Start with a Wurmple and get the T2 Beautifly with at least a benched Ho-oh or a discarded one from Ultraball/Juniper spamming. 1 coin flip my second turn is the only thing stopping Ho-oh from getting 6 different energies on him, retreating Beautifly then hitting anywhere between 100-160 damage on T3. Sounds nice on paper and maybe it is, Rebirth is flippy however and getting a grass energy on Beautifly is going to take a miracle if I also don't get the T1/T2 Energy Search.

So a lot of variables but this deck is immune to any special energy discarding shenanigans, but it is weak to Kyurem EX. Also this deck is super vulnerable to Mewtwo EX but hopefully with Ho-oh's fighting resistance, the upcoming Terrakion EX/Mewtwo variants wont be such a glaring problem.

Card Translations
Ho-oh EX
Ho-Oh-EX – Fire – HP160
Basic Pokemon

Ability: Phoenix
This ability can be used 1 time during your turn if this card is in your discard pile. Flip 1 coin. If heads, attach 3 different Basic Energy cards to this card and play it onto your Bench.

{C}{C}{C} Rainbow Burn: 20+ damage. Does 20 more damage for each different type of Basic Energy attached to this Pokemon.

When Pokemon-EX has been Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.

Weakness: Water (x2)
Resistance: Fighting (-20)
Retreat: 2
Beautifly - Silcoon - Wurmple
Beautifly – Grass – HP120
Stage 2 – Evolves from Silcoon

[G] Triple Energy: Search your deck for 3 different types of basic Energy cards and attach them to your Pokemon in any way you like. Shuffle your deck afterwards.
[G][C][C} Drain Shower: 40 damage. Heal 40 damage from each of your Benched Pokemon.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

----------------------------------

Silcoon – Grass – HP80
Stage 1 – Evolves from Wurmple

[C] Harden: During your opponent’s next turn, if this Pokemon would be damaged by an attack, that attack’s damage does nothing if it is 60 or less.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 3

----------------------------------

Wurmple - Grass - HP60
Basic Pokemon

I've actually been putting some thought into this deck, but I would trade out Cheren and Cilan for Bianca, and I'll explain in a sec, first, take out a Catcher and an Eviolite for another Ultra Ball and Level Ball.

-1 Catcher (3 is enough)
-1 Eviolite (2 is good)
+1 Level Ball (Gotta have that Wurmple out quick)
+1 Ultra Ball (This deck thrives on discarding cards)
-2 Cilan (Easier and quicker to use Beautifly to attach energy)
-1 Cheren (Bianca would be better for this deck)
+3 Bianca (See Cheren)

CIlan doesn't attach energy, it searches for it. It's probably in there to get the T1 {G} Energy.

I like the changes above, except with

-1 N
-1 Juniper
+2 Cilan

I know what it does, but there's a conflict of interest between Cilan and this deck. It runs by discarding Ho-oh and a grip of energy, flipping, resurecting and attaching, but also works by having Beautifly attach with it's attack, which it can't do if the energy is in hand.

And T1 grass is useless, you need it T2.

Thanks for the responses, I know running Cilan is pretty iffy, and I ran into the same conundrum with whether or not I should put in Energy Retrievals as well. Ho-oh can only take 3 energies with him from the discard so if my Ho-oh's are all benched and I still have like 5-6 energy discarded I need a back up plan or not, I don't know how often that scenario will pop up. In a lot of bw-on lists I like having 3 Cheren's and 1 Bianca, but due to the amount of discarding this deck rely's on, Cheren's make my hand really big unnecessarily so I agree with putting in Bianca instead.

So I'll meet you two half way and start playtesting with this:

-1 Catcher
-1 Eviolite
-2 Cilan
-1 Cheren
-1 Juniper
-1 N
-7
+1 Level Ball
+1 Ultra Ball
+3 Bianca
+1 Energy Search
+1 Energy Retrieval
+7

The Cilan was there for clutch situations where Beautifly wasn't an option, or late game when I got my Ho-oh's powered up and I need a few more energies for a KO or something, but I believe another Energy Search would work better being an Item to really let me get that grass energy.

I think you need a good backup attacker.
I'd suggest putting in Zen Mode Darmanitan somewhere in there for emergencies. On the other hand, I absolutely love it. Good work!

What about prism energy? Put 4 of those on a Ho-oh EX...

Sorry but no Prisms/Blend energies allowed.

I have thought about backup attacks such as Mewtwo, Regigigas, and even Tornadus, but putting energies on them and not Ho-oh really ruins the potential of Ho-oh... This deck could just turn into Beautifly + Mewtwo, add double colorless for good measure and just drop Ho-oh all together, but I want the focus around Ho-oh still, and back up attackers take his precious energy. And if everything goes to shit, Beautifly can do 40 and heal 40 from the entire bench, which is a plus I think.

I suggest using Tornadus as a backup attacker because he can provide Ho-oh with different types of basic energy. He's also a way to get around the water weakness if you for some reason need to do this.

Sorry about that. Didn't see that.

Another deck list update. After some unsuccessful games against Darkrai/Hydreigon and GarTaria I've made some adjustments to the current list to suit what this deck really needs.

First off I'm dropping some dead weight.
-1 Energy Retrieval
-1 Energy Search
-1 {D}
-1 {G}
-4

Energy retrieval was just dumb weight I needed to drop, and running 3 Energy searches gives me some wiggle room since I've been getting the T1/t2 grass energies I needed regardless. Now here me out, having 7 out of the 8 possible energies may seem like a bad thing for Ho-oh, but on average per game I only load up Ho-oh with 5-6 energies anyways, enough to guarantee the 2HKO on any EX, even with all 8 energies, he isn't 1HKO anything with an eviolite, and what doesn't have an eviolite, especially in a deck that can't seem to fit in tool scrapper. So I dropped it down to 7 out of 8. Also I reduced grass down to 2 because with all of the energy search, I managed to get a grass energy t1/t2 and then some, so I felt like it wasn't that necessary. If it turns out I really need that dark or grass energy back I can work with that switch, but for now this is my current beliefs with the deck.

Now for the replacements

+2 Super Rod
+2 Switch
+4

Simply put, super rod is this decks best friend, when a Ho-oh goes down and takes 6 energies with him, his Rebirth can only bring back 3 of those, leaving my discard pile full of potential. Late game when my Ho-oh's are all benched, I don't want to sacrifice them just for the chance of pulling out energy from my discard, also this deck has a habit of burning through itself very quickly so putting things back in can never hurt. The switch is for when I start with a naked Ho-oh and I don't have the time or resources to just give up 2 energies for retreating, also switching out Beautifly when she's done lets me super rod energies back in the deck, and keep a grass on her for later use. Plus switch helps me against catcher shenanigans.
