my son is 4 years old and is into the pokemon cartoons and cards. he is actually learning how to read and write because of his interest in pokemon cards (undoubtedly due to MY interest in the TCG).

this is HUGE because he was born premature.. by 12 weeks and 1 day premature. he was considered disabled up until recently. pokemon has been part of it because of his ability to read pokemon names translating into some slight ability to read books. his early grasp of reading is why he is no longer considered disabled.

something tells me I will NEVER get rid of all my cards because of that.

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

Ten things Pokemon has done for me:

1. Provided me entertainment.
2. Given me a competitive hobby.
3. Improved my thinking skills.
4. Improved my creativity.
5. Found new friends.
6. Caused me to find Pokebeach!

Which:

7. Improved my writing skills
8. Given me a venue for intelligent discussion about topics I like.
9. Greatly improved my GFX skills.
10. Allowed me to share ideas and thoughts.

-It's been a lifelong hobby
-It's been one thing that challenges me
-It is something in which I have more knowledge than my friends
-Expanded my creativity
-Been generally inspiring
-I would say pokemon has been a good thing in my life

Heck I think it has positively affected all of us here otherwise we probably wouldn't be here lol

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

This may sound stupid or weird and I don't have much to say about it but basically, I think Pokémon is probably the reason why I didn't kill myself yet...

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

Well it's pretty much the first RPG I've ever played. And it's a major influence on my taking up digital art as a pastime.

Oh and there was that period in 2005/6 where I decided to try and conquer the emerald battle frontier with highly-conditioned pokemon (my friend was aiming for that too) and so I obsessed a lot over EVs and IVs, etc. I'd still recall the hours of nonstop breeding. In the end I made it to silver symbols for all except battle factory which obviously didn't let you use your own pokemon. I never got that last symbol and I think that was sort of the turning point for me where I decided for myself that it was no longer worth that level of commitment. I guess sometimes it doesn't occur to you how much time is wasted on some things, until you just stop and let it all sink in. The selective breeding I did cost me months of effort trying my luck.

I still have the pokemon I raised though. I duplicated them over to my sister's Diamond game in 2008 and managed to defeat the battle tower there

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

@Metalizard, we've all gotta hold onto something, it's human nature. I personally don't think it's stupid or weird at all.

I know that pokemon has touched people ranging from a situation like, i never knew the popular kid was into it till I saw him/her at a league. to something like how it's affected you and I personally. I wanted to share the story, didn't find a thread that seemed geared towards it, so I made one.

if you only want to say it's fun, go right ahead. pokebeach has it's anti flame war rules, so no post is stupid, even if you go off on a tangent and reminisce about playing with base set cards, it'll fit in this thread.

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

It affected everything.
1. It was my first video game
2. One of the first thing that connected me and my 2 brothers together
3. Ever since I was 4, Pokemon has guided me through all the tough times throughout the years, it's not just my hobby, it's something I've loved my whole life, starting from just a small childhood dream.
4. It gave me friends, although eventually lost, I gained new ones from it as well. Pokemon has always given friends, and was the start to my successful social life.
5. Surprisingly, I think Pokemon gave me a boost in reading as well, as I was surprisingly good at writing as a smaller child
6. The way I just look at the world. From strategies, to how I treat others, since I did everything from watch the show, to playing both the Video Game and Card Game since I can remember, Pokemon has always given me a positive look at the world

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

Haha pokemon has influenced my life greatly. I started playing back when I was 5, starting with Blue version. Ive bought at least one game from every gen. It has also affected my creativity, I like to draw fakemon. It is also fun to play my girlfriend in when were bored.(Yes I said it, I have a girlfriend that likes pokemon!) It also helps me calm down when I am upset too. So Id say it has affected me positively...well maybe not my wallet :p

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

@Cofagrigus, I am jealous of your girlfriend's ability to like pokemon. That is about the only negative of pokemon I have found. Girlfriends I have had seem to get annoyed... lol.

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

It has affected mine life as well. Positevly of course.
Except hobby and this forums it has also given me opportunity for a certain piece of a day to be in my own word in my little white box called NDS lite <3. All pus deffo.

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

It's affected me a bit. I spend a lot of money and time on it, it introduces me to Photoshop, which I really like, I was introduced to Pokebeach.

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

Dude, if my girlfriend was into Pokémon, that'd be sick...
Pokémon has affected me in so many ways. I grew up watching the animé: it's been a part of me since I first watched it. Favorite cartoon when I was younger? Ithinkso.
Then I played the video games. They are still my absolute favorite RPGs- or, for that matter, games- to play. Such high levels of thought and still fun after all these years.
Then came the TCG, which I'm into now. There's just such an immense amount of strategy and amusement that I can't give it up. I love playtesting against other players, myself, anyone. While it costs money to play competitively, I believe it's worth it.
Pokémon has been a source of entertainment for me my whole life. I hope that never ends.

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

Also onto the subject, it affected me both positively and negatively
Positive: Pokemon Emerald was the #1 best game I have ever played in the GBA
Negative: Just a week or more after having my Flygon and Sceptile go lvl 75 and having captured Groudon my file went corrupt. I was 10 years old but I cried like a baby and it scared me emotionally, seeing everything I did, suddenly disappear, my contest winning Swellow, and powerhouse Flygon that defeated all of Drakes pokemon with nothing but dragon claws and hyper beams, and Sceptile, who helped me the most through my gym battles, all of it, was lost. Of course I did not kill myself, but it traumatized me to this very day, and although as much as I love Pokemon, I still can't bring myself to buy Heartgold or Soulsilver because of the constant fear of losing everything that I have achieved. And that's why I went with PSP games, the saved files will always be in the memo stick, not in the game, which to me will be WAY more reliable that what pokemon can ever do with their current system of file saving.

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

In my mind, Pokemon itself does nothing to affect people. It's the fandom that it created that results in changing people's mindsets and lifestyles.

For me, Pokemon fandom pretty much solidified my place as a gamer and anime fan. However I also have become somewhat of a recluse in recent years, though that actually had more to do with how I was picked on a lot in high school and started keeping to myself most of the time than anything having to do with Pokemon.

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

It's gives me something to do and I can't give of on it in anyway like my friends have done. It's very fun though I say it's not a children's game. It's for any age. (idk about elders)

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

The Pokémon franchise, in all of its wonderful forms, has definitely had a huge impact on my life, at least as far as time-consumption goes.

The biggest way Pokémon has affected me is the art aspect. Ever since Pokémon was introduced in the U.S., I've been drawing them. Lately, however, with my drawing abilities improving, I've devoted 99% of my "art time" to Pokémon. This trend began when I finally started going online for Pokémon discussion, around the start of the third Generation. Sugimori art takes up most of this time, and the rest goes to the banner art and random pieces I make. The 1% of non-Pokémon art is mostly sketches I do for fun. It's really eaten a lot of the time I devoted to traditional art. One of my resolutions this year is to back down a bit on Pokémon art and try to focus on traditional art again, but so far that hasn't held up.

The games haven't eaten up too much of my time. While I do play the main games a lot, it's not something I go overboard on (except when I first get a game, then I'm pulling all-nighters left and right).

Socially, I don't think Pokémon has affected me at all. I haven't changed my ways just because I like Pokémon.

Without Pokémon, I'm not sure what I'd be doing right now. I'd probably be putting more time into Doom (like more custom maps) or some other series.

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

Pokemon has used up more time in my life and at first I had too much time on my hands and now it seems like I hardly have any time on my hands. Pokemon has caused me to be more relaxed and more casual that I used to actually be. Thank God for pokemon!

RE: how has pokemon has affected your life?

Thanks to pokémon I could speak, write and read English at a very young age. That's always convenient. Also, it gave me a hobby, a passion.
But other than that, nothing. My social life hasn't changed because of pokémon, neither has anything else really.
