How to tell what edition base set boosters are?

I've heard there were 4 runs of the base set, how can i tell them apart when buying booster packs/boxes? I'm just getting back into Pokemon and will be buying these over the next few months.

Also why do some base holos have sparkles on them? I saw a youtube pack opening where the holos has sparkling all over them, i saw another user say it was age abuse. Is this possible?

To answer your original question, there is some symbol on the cover saying if it is first edition.

The 1st edition booster packs will say 1st on them and be very expensive. The other 3 runs are unlimited, and I do not know if there is a difference in the printing on the boosters.
