Hello, Im fairly new to the game and just wondered how you guys know when certain cards or collections are illegall?
and whats modified, unlimited and...er...that other one mean?

thank you very much :)
DANIELx

These terms refer to the format of the game/tournament:

Modified - the current Modified format is HL-on, meaning the Hidden Legends set and everything after it are Modified legal. Next year, it will be DX-on, meaning all card sets after and including ex Deoxys.

Unlimited - in this format, every card made is legal, unless specifically banned.

Limited - in this format, normally only seen at Prereleases or Drafts, only cards from a specific set are allowed. For example, in the upcoming Crystal Guardians Prereleases, only cards from the ex Crystal Guardians set are allowed.

I hope this answers your question.

I think it depends on some of the rules too but I could be wrong.:)

What about the neo pineco card? The one that asks you to flip a coin twice.:)

That would be Ancient Mew and ____'s Pikachu

What about that Sneasel neo-g I think and the Slowking.

No Sneasel and Slowking were banned in old Modified. They are still legal in Unlimited.

Did they ban pineco or is he still in the TCG?:)

I would also like to point out in Limited you can also use only the packs you have received, and if it is a pass draft (rochester or otherwise) you and a group of 8 or so people all make decks out of each other's packs...

ok , thank you for all your help , but

how do you KNOW when things are illegal e.t.c. ? what is your source ? how do you know right now its HL onwards?

thank you

Firstly, welcome to world of Pokemon TCG.

Basically, the Tounaments held at every area and shops will most likely have different rulings. The examples are Modified, Unlimited and Limted or Draft for Short.

Modified is a "Section" where the sets that you are able to use follows the ruling decided by POP, or Pokemon Organized Play. Here, a distance between 2 sets, and any sets released in between it can be used. For example, HL-on means Cards from Hidden Legends to the Latest Set Released, which is currently Holon Phantoms. In conclusion, you can use any cards from that specific set chosen, along with other sets released after it.

Unlimited is also a Format where the most broken decks are played and borned. Feraligatr and Lockdown decks Dominated this format. Anyways, all cards ever released can be used here. This excludes some Japanese Cards that aren't and weren't released in the USA in the English Version. Slowking and Sneasel from Neo Genesis were banned when this set was included in the Modified format long ago. ______'s Birthday Pikachu and Anceint Mew were banned as they have effects that only works on Specific days. Rumour has it that Anceint Mew can attack for 130 damage when it is on a New Year but was proven to be false around my place.

Limited or draft is well-known as Pre-releases which are tournaments which gives you the ability to play a deck with the next set's cards 2 weeks earlier. Another one is that when only chosen sets are only able to use. This means only cards from that specific sets can be used. For example, if the set chosen is Delta Species, means all cards in the deck must be from Delta species. This format for the tournament is rarely held at Shops and Areas.

Hope the guide above helps you with your Problem. and no need to Thank Me, all help I can give.

btw why was ancient mew banned?

PReviously, it had no attacks as it is in Japanese, and it is really complicating. So, it wasn't allowed to be played..... That's what I think...

It's in Japanese? o_O

It's in some whacked up hieroglyphs. But that doesn't explain why it was banned, since it has only one attack, and the energy/weakness/resistance/retreat cost are fairly clear. I get the feeling it was banned because the back was different... :/

Plus if i remember right it only had 30 hp and its attack did 20 for 2 energy. I think it was banned for having a different back and such, and for being utter scrap to play with.

The backing is different and it is also illegible as it IS in hieroglyphs...

There was an official translation produced in some limited deck offer years ago, but I can't find a picture of it. Even with the official translation it is still considered illegal.

If you want a translation then it will be:

HP:30
Weakness: Psychic
Retreat: CC
Attack: PP for 40 damage.

It is illegal regardless of how you debate it so I suggest people just accept it.

Yeah I have heard of that too and once you are done you get to keep them I think.:)
