A little back story:

Alright so, long story short, me and my friends were like, "You know what would be fun? Lets get into Pokemon TCG and try to play at a competitive level!". Sounds like a funny wishful thinking thing, but we are all actually really competitive in video games, and in my childhood I always loved Pokemon and to play TCGs.

My current standing as a Pokemon TCG player:

Well, I have my really really REALLY old cards from back in the day when I used to play as a kid. Since I want to play at a competitive level, I wont be able to use those I think...SO, I decided to purchase the Boundaries Crossed White Kyurem theme deck..I forgot its specific name, lol. I realized soon after some research that theme decks are horrid examples for a competitive deck. I accepted this fact since it is the only modern deck I have and went out to buy 3 Plasma Storm boosters and...well, I guess this is where I should start my questions. I did promise questions in the title, didn't I?

Reader: GET ON WITH IT!! I WANT TO HELP. GET TO THE POINT, DANG IT!!

Boy, you sure are eager! Fine then!

The Questions:

1. Ever since I opened my 3 Plasma Storm boosters worth of cards, I got many cards that aren't the type that my current theme deck supports. Tl;Dr: I don't have the energy to even use some cards to their full potential. How can I expand my energy library? I only have Water, Fire, and 1 Plasma energy from one of the packs

2. Since I want to eventually be competitive, do we have to continue to update our decks to the new releases for tournaments? If so, how many prior generations of cards (Boundaries Crossed, Plasma Storm etc.) are allowed?

3. Is the best way to acquire cards just to buy booster packs? I know that cards can also be individually sold, but they usually are worth a booster themselves or even more.

4. Any tips, guides, words of wisdom, or things that I may not know that I should know for an absolute noob that eventually wants to be competitive?

Answers to these questions are appreciated! Thanks to those that do :D

RE: I'm new meat to Pokemon TCG! Help!

1. Go to a league. The people there are nice enough and want to help new players get into the game. They probably have energy. You could also probably buy energy off of eBay, but going to league is free.

2. The current format is BW-on, meaning you can use cards from any set sknce the Black&White Base set (Black&White, Emerging Powers, Noble Victories, Next Destinies, Dark Explorers, Dragons Exalted, Boundaries Crossed, and Plasma Storm). At the end of the season (about September), some of the earlier sets will become illegal for tournament play.

3. Buying singles is usually the best way to go. Most of the stuff you'll pull out of packs is utter crap. You'd be better off buying a Tornadus EX for $25 than opening $25 worth of Dark Explorers packs hoping to pull one. Although, Plasma Storm is a good set, having a lot of generally usefull cards. You could also use the stuff you pull to trade for the cards you need, but overall, it's safer just to buy singles, no matter how excited openjng packs may be.

4. Get a playset of Catcher and N.

Oh yeah, welcome to fhe forums :p

RE: I'm a new meat to Pokemon TCG! Help! (I have questions)

A great way to get started is to buy the EX promo tins. Rayquaza/Eels, MewtwoEels variants, Darkrai/Mewtwo variants, and straight Darkrai are all very good Tier 1 or Tier 2 decks. Buying singles is probably the cheapest way to build a deck, but you kinda need to know what to build (try testing on PTCGO, or on the free Playtcg.me)

RE: I'm New to the Pokemon TCG! Help! (I have questions)

For Energy, go on eBay and get a bunch - they sell 'em for cheap. Or do what Mora said and go to League. It's really the best way to go. I also like Zarco's idea in that you should definitely pick up some tins. The EXs are solid and are prevalent in the meta, and you're getting the most bang for your buck with those. Other than those, though, go singles. It's quite the gamble to purchase packs - go buy singles instead. Welcome to the Beach!
