Is Naruto really that good?

I'm a fan of Pokemon, DBZ and Shaman king. Naruto's anime series had premiered on the South Asian Cartoon Network in June 2008. It ran the dubbed episodes till the end of the Chunnin Exams arc. You might expect me to be a full blown Naruto fan by now but somehow, I'm not.

I'm not a Naruto hater but actually unconvinced by all the internet hype surrounding the series. It just didn't create that sense of excitement or that warm fuzzy feeling inside of me that every fan feels whenever they see something they are into.

How come? Well you can refer to my posts in the Naruto Club thread in the Clubs section to see my misgivings about the franchise that millions hold dear. I know that this is probably the first time you have ever encountered a guy confused about Naruto and I know that I am alone in my comments, but still this is disturbing for me.

The purpose of this thread is to convince me about Naruto so that I can join the ranks of a Naruto fan. Tell me what do you guys look for in Naruto. What makes you feel good when you watch it or hear something about it? Why do you guys dream of it in your sleep? Why do you believe that it is greater than anything before it?

BTW all Pokemon references should be ambiguous in this thread to keep it topic wise. I'll call it "this forum's title" or something like that. I'm also a fan of the following series: Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, Twisted Metal, Crash Bandicoot, Army Men, Need for Speed, Alien vsersus Predator, Teen Titans, Batman, the Matrix, Terminator, Captain Tsubasa and the original Transformers series (pre 2007). So if you want to know my background, write as if you are writing to a fan of any of the previous franchises and trying to convince them to join Naruto.

Another important note: Please read the Wikipedia article on Cartoon Network India and Pakistan to get a list of what is airing in my region. Please understand that I can't watch everything that you guys can see stateside.

Hope to be convinced soon.
P.S. Don't worry, my posts here will be a lot shorter than all my previous ones.

Ahaha... I think I can tell you why...
I wasn't into Naruto at all last time... My friends keep talking about it but I just shunned it.
Then it was the long term break over here in Malaysia and they were airing Naruto just like yours.
I watched it a little cuz I had nothing better to do. Right about the part where the Chunnin exams ended I was a little intrigued
by the series. So I asked a few friends where to watch the rest of the episodes.
I found the site and started watching. The thing that got me hooked onto it was the storyline as well as the not-so-lame dubbing.
You don't hear that annoying "Believe it!" at the end of almost every one of Naruto's sentences.
The storyline soon gets interesting with a few fillers and Naruto Shippuden will definitely get you hooked onto it even more.
You could also try reading the mangas.

Honestly, no one can convince you to like it. It's all up to you. In my opinion though, watching the subbed versions is definitely
better that the dubbed versions.

Well..hope you'll join the Naruto circle soon enough but don't let it tak eover your life.
Dattebayo!

I have dealt with Shippuden, but my 8 misgivings still hold me back from getting into it. Check them out at http://www.pokebeach.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=47276. Discuss why I am wrong in saying these things. I got really beat by the club.

Naruto is a decent anime...watching it so far, I can give it props....but, Naruto can't compete with Bleach IMO

while there have been some good fights and good character development, even times where I could be really wrapped up in the story...but the build to the climaxes of the arcs are a bit slowly driven from what I've seen so far

honestly...you say you want to like Naruto, but you keep discussing why other animes are better and how bad Naruto is compared to them...

That just doesn't make any sense lol

You keep down-grading Naruto compared to other animes, so my basic conclusion is:

You don't like Naruto, live with it :p

You're not alone. I found it to be drawn out and when they finally do manage to do something it's not very exciting. If I wanted to clap after someone jumps on a giant frog, I'd make a flip book on the corner of my sticky notes. Sorry for you lovers of the show, but like the OP I just can't seem to get interested.

Naruto is just... ok.

I used to love it years ago. That is, until they had >100 eps of fillers. Fillers are ok, until they are boring and repetative.

Naruto Shippuuden is good. It isn't great or terrible. It has some great action scenes, but some scenes are draged on. You can tell the voice actors didn't care for the drama scenes.

Naruto is just OK. Go watch better animes like DBZ, Bleach, Code Geass, or even D-Greyman.

while I was huge fan of DBZ, but after seeing many other animes since then, you could see the flaws the series had...but it was the intense action that made up for it...I would actually put Naruto and DBZ on the same level

I put DBZ ahead of Naruto just because it was great for it's time and it DOES have amazing action scenes.

I don't think The Demon fox at full power could match the might of the dragon of the 11th movie of this forum's franchise. He'll send the fox to the dimension of the alphabet creatures and they'll put it to sleep for long enough until the fox loses its sentience and becomes one of the 493 creatures out there.
BTW, when Goku blasted Cooler into the sun in the 5th DBZ movie, It had already surpassed anything past, present and future. Naruto has to get "cooler" than partnering up with giant foxes.

Haha, just playing with you all! I think it’s a good way to enliven ourselves, it’s the grown up way of challenging you to a Beyblade battle!:D

But there is another mystery that you have brought up for me: Why do people keep on saying go watch the sub? I mean when there is a well dubbed English show coming why would you prefer to watch it in Japanese?

You may think that I might have been living under a rock (as the cliche goes) but in fact that is what boarding school is like...no correction...it's like a prison.
Anyway, if anyone knows anything about the Japanese language, they'll know that it is TOTALLY unrelated to any existing language today. That means you really can't even take a letter from it and understand it. It's belonging to a whole different system of thinking that is impossible for English only speakers to understand. It's not like watching a sub of a French movie where you can pick up stuff like stupiiid or iimPossiible so that you can laugh as it happens.
Plus the only two things I have seen in subs that people only watch for are (i) swearing. It isn't fun just to read the swear words. Infact they characters maybe saying something else and it might be mistranslated. Besides I read on wikipedia (In the editing of Anime for American distribution article) that the Japanese language doesn't have real swear words like in English. So the point of reading swears seems stupid to me. (ii) There are cut out scenes of R rated stuff that I myself don't enjoy.
(iii) Lost in Translation. Stuff like the alcohol Lee consumed to do the Drunken fist style have been changed. But really, it actually looked better in the dub that an elixir could give more power to a ninja. Maybe if Naruto could take some, we might see the NineTailedFox finally release itself. In fact a third of the fun in anime is comparing the dub and original. It's almost like a richer experience when enjoying an anime.
(iv) Voice acting. I don't know but don't the Japanese voices sound funny? Not just in Naruto takes Dawn's Japanese. Super high pitched! Goku's Japanese voice makes bad 70s Kung fu movies sound better!!!

Besides, the whole idea of sub watching is weird. It's like I am encouraging you to watch movies like "Transformers Headmasters" in Japanese or "The Pink Panther" in French just because they were originally shown in those languages. You might understand my thinking if I told you to go watch the Spanish dub of Batman The Dark Knight (and flamed you if I didn't)
Maybe I missed something because over a million fans of Naruto in America alone can't be watching subs all day. That would have come out in the mainstream media then! Imagine CNN or E! talking about Naruto! I doubt I would have missed that! As far as I know, that hasn't happened.

the best DBZ movies they've had are:

Tree of Might
Broly, The Legendary Super Saiyan
Broly: The Second Coming
Bojack

the Cooler movies were too long and drawn out, especially Return of Cooler...Super Android 13 was just a steaming pile...although, World's Strongest, Dead Zone, and Lord Slug were fairly decent, the rest of the movies were either ok, or just poor

the whole animal thing with Naruto is just apart of the appeal to Naruto...that's one of the things that make Naruto

How was Bojack a good movie? All Gohan had to do was go Super Saiyan 2, and punch Bojack in the stomach. Then he just died from it. I do admit the earlier battles were good, but that final battle with Bojack was horrible. The Dragonball Z movie, Wrath of a Dragon was better then that movie.

EDIT: Speaking of Dragonball Z, there was a new episode released recently. But its in 100% Japanese, but it has subtitles. Its the fifteen anniversary episode.

Here is the link if your interested:

Welcome back Yakkov!
Anyway please try to stick a bit more closer to Naruto on this thread. Ah forget that, I love all opinions!
Hey guys, does anyone know a site where you can quickly upload Shippuden episodes? I'm getting sick of waiting on Youtube. There is this site for all dbz episodes that loads them in real time. Like its a 25 minute episode so you just click play and watch it all for 26 minutes hassle-less and free! (minor loading delays only)

Any such site for Naruto? Maybe I'll give Part II another go.

Naruto's fanbase is gigantic and because of its deep universe and characters I'd say it's a good franchise. But god, way too many fillers. That's the show's only real flaw; an overabundance of filler episodes that drag on and on and on.

Yeah I agree, Naruto isn't nearly as good of a Shonen as One Piece which is currently the best Shonen series out in Japan right now. Bleach pretty much went downhill after the Soul Society Arc plus nobody plays the TCG where I play anymore...

But seriously you guys should definitely check out the One Piece series, no I'm not talkin' about the crappy 4Kids version go watch the FUNimation English dub for it on DVD or better yet you can watch the Japanese Sub Online.

It's really good, trust me...

Technically it was a good franchise until it really went downhill in Part 2 (Shippuuden). The fillers aren't the only flaw to the series, the quality of the animation design has gotten worse since the start and finish of Part 1 but not totally horrible though, the manga also has alot of flaws and inconsistences as well like too much of Sasuke Uchiha and less of everyone else especially Uzumaki Naruto (at least that's how it was last year).

Bad writing on Kishi's part and lack of character diversity hurt the series the most despite the amount of character diversity the series had during the Chunin Exams in Part 1. There's less of it in Part 2, because it's mostly about just Naruto and Sasuke even though Sasuke is a emo friend Mary Sue... >_>

Naruto vs. Sasuke at VoTE during Part 1 is still one of the best battles in the series, not even the battles in Shippuuden (Part 2) reached that level of epicness ever well maybe Sasuke vs. Deidara but that had stupid power haxing with dues ex machina's in the mix. Sasuke vs. Itachi in Part 2 was a huge disappointment to tell you the truth.

I've also noticed that the series has become more about power jutsu than just combining it with strategy, tactics, cunning, and wit to win battles as well like with shinobi such as Shikamaru and Kakashi who IMO are probably some of the best characters in the series. Itachi was interesting as well, as was Minato and the Third Hokage.

Uzumaki Naruto turned out to be a big disappointment through most of Part 2 until he went Sage Mode and pulled a SSJ2 Gohan on Pein's bodies before running out of Natural chakra for Hermit Mode. That's somewhat poor story telling IMO, in the end though it was a way of Kishi "showcasing" how Naruto's willpower overcomes genius and skill. The whole "Child of Prophecy" crud that Kishi did was a poor deus ex machina to help improve Uzumaki Naruto in the series compared to all the support he already gave to Sasuke in 2008 last year with the Uchiha Storyline.

The only reason why most people are reading the Naruto manga nowadays (well at least 75% at least I assume) is to see how it's gonna end. Kishi should just end the series after Naruto defeats Pein If he does without getting captured first.

Go tell your friends that One Piece is the true successor to the Dragonball series, it was never Naruto to begin with like we all thought 3 years ago but the reason why it's horrible now is because of how Studio Peirrot and Kishi jacked up the series.
