Discussion Is Vespiquen (AOR) Overused?

So, I was at my league yesterday, and about 3/4 of the players used a Vespiquen/Eeveelution deck. Don't get me wrong, its a great card, but to me it just seems overused. Its not a big deal to me, but it seems that some players are being lazy and don't want to make up their own ideas, and just get a strong deck. I have made one in PTCGO, and I found it slow,boring, and maybe even a bit overrated. It is still a good deck, but it seems overused.

Now, lets think about the card itself. It has two attacks, one being intelligence gathering. It does 10 damage for a single colorless energy, and lets you draw until you have six cards in your hand. At first glance, this pokemon seems like a substitute for Bianca, but lets look at the next move.

The next move, Bee's Revenge, does 20 damage plus 10 for each pokemon in the discard pile. This is a new revenge deck, and is also what makes it a great card. I was using my Electimortar at the time(Magmortar and Electivire combo) and it destroyed me.


So the million-dollar question is, do people overuse this deck?

I just think that its popular. Its reasonably cheap and works well which means that anyone can get their hands on it. The one thing I have noticed (both playing it and playing against it) is that most people have quite different variations of it. if you feel it is overused in your area try out Delta+ Swellow with eeveelutions. That scared it of from my area.

I rarely see it in my area (Nottingham - UK), but I can see why people play it. I guess that's what I like about Pokemon, that there's a top-tier deck like this that's relatively affordable (except for the Shaymins I guess).

I think the issue with a lot of competitive games (fighting games, card games etc) is that people will gravitate towards what's good rather than what's interesting/what they personally enjoy, hence the prevelance of Vespiquen. I understand it's frustrating, though.

Also, props for using Magmortar - that deck always seemed so fun to me!

compared to its predecessor plasma flareon I don't think this deck is overused. A deck that gets overused will normally make top 8 more than once I've only seen a few vespiquen finishes (then again we haven't seen a lot of standard tournaments yet). Don't get me wrong I have built this deck its fun but when it gets item locked it pretty much looses steam.

Is it possible that a large amount of decks that are easy matchups for Vespiquen being used in your league, resulting in an optimal meta call? I believe that favourable matchups and hype are two of the three main factors for an insane percentage of players using a certain deck. The last factor is simply that the deck is so good, but I know that Vespiquen is beatable and has bad matchups.

Out of the ten people who play consistently in my area week to week only 2 people play with the deck, It could be the large amount of giratina/variant, hawlucha/meinshao, and other decks that absolutely crush vespiquen by matchup are being played in my area but vespiquen is literally a 0 threat deck in standard where I live. Stuff like entei is more of a threat, so in theory there is a lot more creativity in the area then just 1 deck.

But I think Vespiquen might be getting worse because EVEN I was able to beat quite a few when most of them all my shaymin were prized. But sadly I still suck... All it means is that my mega sceptile/giratina is okay.

One of the reasons there are a lot of Vespiquen on PTCGO would simply be because they are much easier (and cheaper!) to obtain in comparison to other hyped decks from AOR, and is a deck that actually does quite decent.

Availability? Vespiequen (XY: Ancient Origins 10/98) is an Uncommon making it easier to come by than many other primary attackers, possibly suggesting it was intended to bee played quite a bit. Now if you think it is the right call for the local metagame, it might be overplayed that way. It may be a bit boring when you want to face more varied opposition but the main thing is to resist being a snob about it (seriously, I am so bad about this because I get annoyed when I get stuck playing the same opponent over and over again, especially if it is either an extremely difficult or easy match-up).

Anyway the big thing is to be careful in how you approach this. I am (regrettably) often a negative example of this as I tend to be heavy handed or condescending. Not everyone enjoys the Pokémon TCG in the same way, and when it comes to being creative with your deck choices, it is quite hard in a game where so many decks are basically manufactured for you. @TCGDeoxys you mention you run an Electivire and Magmortar deck. If these are the XY: Furious Fists versions then while the deck may not be widely used, it isn't "original"; each of those Stage 1 cards name the other for bonus effects for one of their attacks. If you came up with an innovative approach to it, that is great... so long as it wins at least close to as much as the "boring" deck you are criticizing others for using. That is two separate requirements; if it plugs Electivire and Magmortar into a pretty typical deck engine that isn't especially creative is it, taking two cards designed to be used together and using a bunch of cards most other decks use? And if you aren't winning much (or at all) then it speaks to your player type.

Three main "kinds" of players for TCGs, originally designated by WotC for Magic: The Gathering:

1 ) Timmy - Likes "big" and/or "flashy" stuff, especially if they are his favorite Pokémon.
2) Johnny - Likes innovating, designing new or complex combos and decks, using stuff others don't.
3) Spike - Likes winning... usually because the TCG is how he or she tests his or herself through competition.

Few players I've met don't have a little bit of all three, and WotC has a few others that aren't as prominent but I'm not going into them. Vespiquen as one time easily fit all three; though we saw it coming, its exact usage was something for Johnny, building up to huge attacks was something for Timmy and winning was something for Spike. If a Vespiquen deck can do something different, it can still work for Johnny and if it still wins it works for Spike (Timmy should be good either way).

My deck wins alright. About 70% of the time I win. Thats because I thought a lot. I don't use so many big cards like N in it(My tourneys are expanded) and I don't use any EXs in it. I've looked at the decklists, and at least 40 cards in them are different from mine.

That would depend on what you're playing against. I assume it has a good matchup against Vespiquen, since that's clearly very meta in your area and you win a lot, and logical reasons would be that Magmortar hits it for weakness, and Electivire OHKOs with some setup, as well as you not using EXes and therefore being even in the prize trade. But against bulkier decks that you don't hit for weakness, such as Yveltal EX or Mega Manectric EX, I doubt your deck would be winning seventy percent of the time.
I realize that doesn't really pertain to your question of whether Vespiquen is overplayed (which I don't think it is if you look at the big picture), but in regards to that: that is simply your own local metagame, and is likely not applicable to most other regions or cities where other decks are popular.

No one in my league uses Yveltal or M Manectric. I have no idea why. So, my league has about 13 people. 6-8 use vespiquen. I understand that it is probably not overused in your area, but in mine, it seems like it. I can promise you my number is not inaccurate or made up. It is simply because most of the time I play vespiquen decks and my magmortar OHKOs vespiquen with twin bursts. I agree on your statement about Yveltal. I don't know why no one uses him at my league, one guy uses plasma lugia(again, its expanded) and 2 use a landorus deck, and one uses M Aggron, one M ampharos, me, and the rest use vespiquen, one being night march, other being eveelutions.

I didn't read the entire thread here, but we can agree that Bees are a viable meta option. They're inexpensive to build and powerful to boot. Therefore, they will see more play than decks that use more expensive cards.

I wouldn't use the word "overruse" in comparison to words like "popular". On a large scale, the deck is by all means overrused, but popular because of its few weak matchups and good Prize trading. The meta may be composed of Bees, but is not in its entirety.

I do agree that "overuse" isn't the best phrase; it seems like the deck is over represented in that local metagame if it really has a disproportionate amount of people using a deck when compared to the hypothetical national or global metagame. According to a prior post

As this likely includes people already using the latest cards and we don't have any major tournament results for those (which tend to be the best indicator of what "should" be played), I don't know if that is more or less but it seems pretty reasonable given the low sample size versus the availability of Vespiquen.
