Hey Beach Bums - time for my monthly update again.
So in January I didn't get play nearly as much as I did in December. I only played 316 matches this month vs. 554 in the prior month. I went 192 and 124 though for a 60.76 winning percentage! I really don't know what to think about that - am I really getting better? I was only at 53% for the previous 4 months combined, so this is a huge spike.
It might be because I played so much Greninja. 170 of the 316 matches I played was with Greninja, and I won 65% of the matches I played (111 - 59).
The level of opposition I faced in January was the same this month as last. In December, my opponent had the advantage 39% of the time (189 times in 554 matches). I had the advantage 40% of the time (223 times in those 554 matches). Amazingly, in January, my opponent had the advantage 106 times in 316 matches - again 34% of the time. And again, I had the advantage in 127 of my 316 matches - also 40% of the time.
In January, when I had the advantage, I won 67% of the time. In December, it was 65%. In January when I didn't have the advantage, I won 51% of the time; in December, it was 41%. When neither of us had the advantage: December it was a 50-50 split, but in January I won 63% of the time.
My opponents played a pokemon with an ability (other than Shaymin, Hoopa, or Talonflame) 71% of the time. This is very close to the 73% played in the previous four months. I won 62% of the matches I faced against opponents without abilities, 60% against those with abilities. In the previous 4 months, I was 59% against pokemon without abilities, and 51% against those with abilities.
My opponents played energy disruption cards (E Hammer, Crushing Hammers, or Team Flare Grunt) 17% of the time in January. In December, it was 21%. I won 67% of the matches where they played energy disruption in January, but only 60% of the matches where they didn't. I won 52% of the matches where they played hammers in December and 54% where they didn't in December.
In January, my opponents played decks with special energy 59% of the time, and I won 57% of those matches. I won 62% of the matches in January where they did not play special energy. In the previous 4 months, my opponents played special energy 59% of the time, and I won 54% of the time when they played special energy and 64% of the time when they did not.

Interesting that Darkrai is back up at the top of how decks did against me - it was at the top way back in September. What goes around, comes around.
Which leads me to my next point: I think I'm going to create some separation here. The meta has been so stale over the past 5 months, and now with Sun and Moon, everything is going to change so much, so I think I'm going to start over again a little with next month and not mix next February's data with the previous 5 months.
Good luck to everyone as Sun and Moon is almost here!
