Ruling Just a few questions...

Hey guys,

I am newly signed up here, but I have been viewing the forums and reading threads and stuff for a few weeks. I have recently got back into the TCG, and want to start battling and stuff (I only really collected them when I was younger). I have been trying to learn all the rules, but there are few I can't work out. I have a few other questions too.

1. What does it mean when someone says (in the deck garage section):

Tyranitar MT (3-2-3)

I know what Tyranitar is and I'm not sure about the MT part but I can work that out. I can't seem to understand what the (3-2-3) part means.

2. How does evolution work in the TCG? Do you have to start with a basic Pokemon, for example is it completely useless to have a Charizard if you don't have a Charmander and a Charmelion as well? If not, what is the benefit of having basic Pokemon at all?

3. What does the rare candy card do? I have heard of it, but I don't understand what it does? How is it any different than just evolving a Pokemon normally? Do they come in booster packs? I have never actually seen one.

4. Do energy cards come in booster packs or do I need to buy a theme deck and get them from that? I have purchased 5 booster packs in the last week and only gotten 1 metal energy and nothing else.

5. I got the Royal Frost theme deck, and also in a booster pack I got another Empoleon. How could I incorporate him into the deck?

Anyway, thanks a bunch, and I look forward to reading the answers to these things which I have been unsure about.

:p

I'll incorporate questions 1, 2, and 3 into one answer.

Evolution is based upon the lines of Pokémon in an evolution. Normally, we would only need -3-3-3 but the speed is very slow, taking three turns to max evolve at maximum. Thus, Rare Candy is used to jump the Stage 1 Pokémon and skip directly to Stage 2. Considering the less nessecity to use Stage 1's, we drop some for more useful cards.

4. Energies mainly come from theme decks, but they come in about twice as much as you need. No, you don't need half a deck of energies.

5. Trash the whole deck for most cards except the Empeleon line. I think. Maybe some of the Metal energies. Maybe some trainers. I have no idea what else is in the deck, but DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE IT AS A DECK GUIDELINE.

1. Way of shortlisting the lines is... Highest Evolution Set Basic-Stage 1-Stage 2.
So Tyranitar MT 3-2-3 is a Tyranitar line from MT, with 3 Larvitars, 2 Pupitars, and 3 Tyranitars.

2. Well, I'm assuming you've read the cards, and you'll see that "Evolves from X" is in the corner. Evolve is to "put onto" the card, remove special conditions and... um... I don't think evolution does anything else.

Thanks. I understand the first one now.

I don't think you understand the 2nd question though.

Are you allowed to use a 1st or 2nd stage Pokemon straight out, or does it have to be evolved from a basic Pokemon, so if I picked a card (like you do each turn) and it was a 2nd stage Pokemon, could I put it on my bench and use it, or would I have to have the 1st stage there already to put it on?

Hey, use your logic. Why would people use 3-2-3 if a T-tar could come straight out? Think about it.

And look at the Stage 2s, do you think we'd really give them straight-out play?

Ok so basically you are saying that you can only use a 1st or 2nd stage Pokemon when it has been evolved?

Sorry if I sound stupid. I am just new to the rules of the game.

You have to evolve into a stage 1 or stage 2 pokemon. You cannot just lay down, for example, and Electivire to start the game with.

Cool. Thanks alot for your help.

Thanks heaps to Lt. Houndoom too, although it took a while to get a straight answer for that one!
Oh sorry to double post but I have 2 more questions.

1. When you use an attack do you have to discard however many energy cards it requires?

2. If you draw a card that happens to be the a 1st or 2nd stage Pokemon but you don't have the basic or 1st stage Pokemon on your bench, what do you do with it? Does it just go into the discard pile?

I can help.

1. No, the energies for an attack just tells what energy you need for that attack, you don't discard it, unless there is a effect that states you have to discard a number of energies.

2.No, let's say you have a Empoleon in your hand and no piplup or prinplup, it stays. Never discard unless stated by a card.

Hope that helped!

Unless the attack states that you have to discard an energy card(s) to use the attack, you don't discard them =D

No, it does not just go to the discard pile. It stay's in your hand. However keep this in mind - When you draw your 7 initial cards, if you get no basics in that, you must shuffle them back into your deck and draw another 7 cards. That is called a Mulligan

Yep, awesome. I get it now. Thanks guys.

If I have any more questions I will post them here but I think I am pretty set.

BTW I know this sounds a little random but a few rules that newbies I have talked to have not known about:

There is no limit to your hand size, you never discard when your hand is "too big" apart from if a stadium or attack tells you to.

You can only retreat once per turn and may not play a trainer, supporter or stadium classes of card on your first turn. Evolution cannot occur the turn that poké comes into play or on your first turn.
