And I had a few questions about making my decks. I have been collecting since the cards first came out, now adding up to four overflowing binders.

My question mostly is is it alright to mix cards from any set (old and new) as long as I followed the four name limit ruling? Or can I only play with the tourney-legal sets?

The comic shop I work in was looking to start Pokemon TCG tourneys, so I wanted to try and gather as much info as possible when it comes to what can and cannot be played with nowadays. Especially since my boss was looking to put me in charge of that department.

You can mix cards from sets old and new if you want to make an unlimited deck, as long as you follow that rule. Right now, the current format is about to be BW-on, and I do recommend using black and white cards only, since most of the older cards don't compare. It would let you go in tournaments also.
By the way, if there is a card in the format with the same name as a card from past sets, you may use them. (Excluding Pokemon.)

Thankies for the info, guys. :) This should all help me greatly in getting our shop prepared for tourneys in the (hopefully) near future!
 
I'll add that in order to hold tournaments sanctioned by TPCi, you have to become a Tournament Organizer.

Of course, you could hold unsanctioned tournaments, however no Play Points or Championship Points could be awarded.

Someone correct me if I am wrong :p.
