can't get Bridgit Mendler out of my mind
Member
I have seen that lately, there have been new members. Most of them are not as old as the average, which is 15. They can read the rules, of course, but there are a lot of rules, and they just started. So reminding them very important rules (Like spamming or advertising) they will know how to do better. I would like to help them, since they usually skip the rules and the n00bish guide. Can I do this?

o_e Errrr....

If they skip the rules and the "n00bish guide", then they're pretty much bringing about their own demise. :/ I don't see a point in trying to get people who can't read the rules in the first place to understand the rules by hearing them from another member.

I guess my point is this: All they have to do is read the rules and remember them. Every member should. So I don't see why this would be needed.

The best thing to do is just use that little Report button and since they are new, the mods usually will let them know. Although, there are repeat offenders. Maybe, once they activate their account, they are directed to the page where the rules are, and a secret word is hidden in the rules. Until they typed in that secret code, they can't post, PM, that stuff. By typing in the rules, they know that the rules have been read.

This would also be good as a checkup for our current members, like every once in I don't know... two weeks so that the members will soon have to memorize the rules. And the code would always be in a different place and a different code.

Of course, that's just a suggestion.

That is a nice idea, I like it very much. But keep reporting them won't make them now.

When a moderator warns someone, a PM is sent to them along with the warning. The PM normally contains details on why they were warned and what they should do to not repeat what they did to get warned.

Really, it just seems to come down to their ability or willingness to read and remember the rules. If they're unsure of something, they could just PM a Moderator (like the rules say). :D

I've been thinking about this too. A lot of the new members get perma-banned on their first week. Maybe we should make a tutorial with pictures of stuff you can and can't do, and I'm not as farmiliar with MyBB as I am with other forum types, but I'm pretty sure that you can make it so that you can't post in certain forums till you have a certain amount of posts/posts in a certain area. Maybe we should have each new member post in a rules thread that they read the rules before they post elsewhere.

If a person goes on a forum and doesn't read the rules, it's the same thing as following a contract and not providing your side of the deal. You are expected to abide by the restrictions provided in order to keep the privilege of posting, commenting, etc.

If they don't read the rules, it's their fault and their problem (and the mods' work =P).

Theyre just killing themselves if they dont read the rules, half of the members here have come from some other forum, so they know the rules. These people think that just because theyre new to this forum they can break rules and ruin it for some other new person who hasnt been in a forum before because in a way they are making the moderaters stricter. Thats just a theorie though...

Key word: normally. *ahem*

Anyway, we can't do much better from what we already have. We've got the Rules in every forum for crying out loud! It's their responsibility to read the rules, not our responsibility to force them to.

dmaster out.

I think that the sentiment is good and well-meaning, but at the same time I'm not entirely sure what else can be done that's not completely impractical.

There's probably some form of middle ground on the subject, I just have no ideas as to what it might be. :\

o_O The only ones that have been getting perma-banned within a week are the ones that are ban evading (which there has been a lot of) or just joining to cause chaos, etc.

Anyways, I'm just going to wait for another moderator to post their feelings on this, so I can see where they stand about a program like that - it's like so many people have said already: if they choose not to read the rules, they're hurting themselves.

Wouldn't that be mini-modding?

What's "Ban evasion"? If it was in the rules, oops, I read them like three times before signing up!

So we're supposed to encourage them NOT to read the rules?

Who ever said that? o_O Almost everyone here has said it's up to them to read the rules. Every member is strongly encouraged to read the rules when they join. I have no clue where you got that notion.

And to Shining Suicune: Ban evasion is when someone's account is banned, but they come back on another account before the first ban is lifted or runs out. In the case of a perma-ban, the person should just not return to the forums.

No, if I am a tutor or something like that. I want to evade that, that is why I am asking any kind of permission.

A tutor program would be ridiculous. If the new members can't even bother reading the rules, would they care about joining a tutor program?
