Making a VGC guide, need opinions on what to add.

I'm helping some friends irl(I might put it online as well, but idk) get into the VGC game and plan to write a guide for them to use. I want it to be useful to newbies and people who know a little bit about battling already. These are the things I've got so far on my list of this to cover. This guide is for VGC12(since it is most similar to GBU) and will include VGC13 information too when available.

VGC Guide Points/Index

  • Beginners
    - EV training/EV Hotspots in BW1+2, Natures/Synchronize
    - IVs and how to get good ones.
    - Soft Resetting guide (will list popular legendaries, where to catch them, and their max stats with their most useful nature(s).(Might be moved to advanced)
    - Possible Catching strategy guide.(False Swipe, Mean Look, Spore etc.)
    - Strong Pokemon and Weak Pokemon (What not to do at a stoplight use.)
    Any player
    - Popular Strategies (TR, Sun, Rain, etc.)
    - Advanced Combonations (VolcTop, Disquake, Protexplosion, etc.)
    - Countering the "Metagame" and how Unique Pokemon give you an upperhand.
    - (Not certain on this one)Base Stats guide to popular Pokemon (What pokemon like Thundurus, Garchomp etc. stats are like at Lv.50 with certain spreads)
    - Movesets guide to VGC 12. (I don't think smogon's 1 set per VGC pokemon is very helpful.)
    - Movests guide to VGC 13.
    Advanced information
    - Brief info on RNG abuse (IV TImefinding and PID advancing stuff)(5th gen)

I think I've covered almost everything, anything else I should add/remove?

Great concept. The base stats thing would be awesome, but also really time-consuming it seems. You may add something like a section on the Metagame itself so people can learn about it. That would help them on learning how to counter it. I love this idea.

Might seem like a given, but be sure to mention that EV Spreads in VGC should reflect multiples of 8, not of 4. So for example, 248/248/8 would be used for a max spread instead of 252/252/4.

...no, that's a bad idea. Level 50 is not exactly half of Level 100 in terms of EVs and stats; it is slightly more than half. An Adamant Metagross at level 50 with only 248 ATK EVs will have an ATK stat of 204. If you dump 252 into it, it gets the maximum possible of 205. On top of that, dumping 4 EVs into its HP instead of 8 makes absolutely no difference whatsoever.

Dumping only 248 means you're going to miss out on the 1 point that could make or break you.

Metalkid's stat calc is a fantastic tool. Ill probably use that if I add the base stats guide.

And yeah, one Approved, I learned that the hard way. I kept a cress with 30 HP IVs and well, it looks unprofessional.

You know what would be a great idea....

Try listing teams that the VGC Champions or other great battlers have used. That way, people can either make a similar team or make a team that counters it. This would definitely allow a more advanced team building strategy. Yes, it kind of goes along with "countering the metagame" and "team synergy", but still, it's worth a try.

By the way, great VGC guide ideas.
