I found this on the internet and I found it pretty interesting, it makes some pretty good points.

Well first of all the part of that saying "Ditto is a failed Mew" is a fail in itself since:
at the end of the development of Red and Green, programmer Shigeki Morimoto noticed that there was enough room for one more Pokémon, following the removal of the debugging tools. And so, Mew itself was quietly inserted into the code
meaning that ditto was made long before Mew was even thought of, so Mew is like DittoTwo. XD

Secondly Ditto and Mew don't have the same colourscheme, Ditto is a purpley colour while Mew is pink. As for their shinies, they are very similar, however Mew is definately a lighter blue than Ditto.

Thirdly Mew is genderless because it a legendary, Ditto is Genderless because it can transform into either gender.

Something interesting I saw on Bulbapedia (I think) a while ago though is that Ditto is the next stage in the evolution of Mew.

P.S: I'm going to add more points to this post when I have the time.

Well, Mew and Ditto are alike in the sense that they can both transform and take on the form of any other Pokemon. Aside from that, they're totally different.

For one, Mew can actually fight. :T

Mew was by no means the last Pokemon programmed into RBY. In fact it was actually one of the first. The Pokemon were added as they were created. 'M is 0 on the list because it is filler data, and Rhydon is 1 - leading credence to the theory that Rhydon was the first ever created Pokemon.

If you'll notice, Mew's index number is 21, Ditto's is 76, and Mewtwo's is all the way at 131.

Besides, why is Pokemon #150 called 'Mewtwo' if there is no 'Mew one'? Obviously the original Mew came before the 'improved' Mew.

So yeah, guys, this theory...it's really stupid.

So would it be correct in assuming that Index No. 151 would have been the last in Gen I? Or at least that would make sense. I notice that a lot of secondary gen Pokemon are also in the programming with the Bird and Normal type. I would assume that the attacks - 'Sky Attack' and 'Water Gun' were programed in as to test, with a two turn attack move and a reliable TM move. (Originally). I'm also now thinking that it is possible to bump into a missingno with ghost abilities, not being able to be hit. But would this also mean that all Pokemon past 151 are, or were rejected designs? Or, all the, now Second Gen, Pokemon that are missigno got put on hold and never got released?
Or is this just way off topic?

.... ._. im lost.

well pokemon at first was thought to be a failed product and nintendo didnt really want to support it but it took off....and here we are today descussing how similar mew and ditto are....:D

@Delta: Presumably, although there are actually a lot of holes in the data which are now occupied by Missingno.. An assumption would be that they were Pokemon originally intended to be in the game, but the designs were rejected, and so they exist as, effectively, junk data. You'd expect the highest index number for the Pokemon to be 151, but in fact it's actually 190 (Victreebel). The rest of the spaces of data, up to 255, are data for trainer sprites or other junk Pokemon data.

You could argue that there were plans for more than 151 Pokemon in Generation I, but for whatever reason, they were either scrapped or postponed. As for the reason why Missingno.. has its typing (Bird/Normal) and its moveset (Water Gun/Water Gun/Sky Attack), it's possible there were plans for a Water legendary bird Pokemon, but the idea was scrapped. However, the moveset remained, the beta Flying-type remained, and interestingly, 'M (Missingno.'s lookalike) has a cry much like Zapdos.

There really isn't a whole lot of proof to go on, but Gen I speculation is always an interesting hot topic.

Okay, people here's the truth about Mew and Ditto.

Mew is a species of Pokemon, right? Well, the main Mew, whose name is Richard, lived in an igloo...In Africa... Richard lived with his messed up brother Carl. One day, Richard and Carl were walking down the busy street to find a lonely bag of milk. Since Richard is not so nice, Richard had pushed Carl in front of a bus. Ditto, is the messed up remains of Carl. Then, Richard found the bag of milk and ran away to Canada.

That's is what happened.

I don't think they're saying that Ditto was a fail mew clone by GameFreaks, but by Pokemon Lore, perhaps.

I think they're just remarking on the fact that Ditto and Mew are sort of "related" to all Pokémon in a way... but by no means is it a failed Mew clone.

What is bugging me most is that it says "Ghost" next to some Pokemon. And they use the type of "Fire" and "Flying". It says that before the list starts that ghost and fossil Pokemon copy the type before it, and as this is charizard...

I know nothing about programming so I'd love to hear some theories on why they evolve into kangashkhan. Another beta maybe? Don't know about you but Kangashkhan babies do look an awfull lot like Rhydon.

What? "Ghost," "Fire," and "Flying" are types... and I have no idea what the 2nd sentence or the whole 2nd paragraph means...

Kangaskhan's index number is 1. 'M's is 0. 'M evolves into Kangaskhan at any level. Missingno. does not evolve at all.

An unusual glitch will happen that, if you view 'M or Missingno. in a box, then hit Summary, for some reason, Rhydon's cry will be heard. If you click Deposit/Withdraw right after that, that Pokemon forever becomes a Rhydon. That could be due to the fact that Rhydon's index number is 2, and possibly some sort of redirect.

That last sentence is speculation. The others are not.

Their are reasons why they are genderless, their are reasons why they both learn transform, (Mew having the dna of all Pokemon and Ditto being a...transformation Pokemon)
Ditto can copy the DNA of any Pokemon, Mew HAS the DNA of all Pokemon.
