Well, in today's COTW, we review a high potential Pokemon-EX in the Recent released set, Ex: Holon Phantoms.

Give a warm Welcome to....

Mew EX

Type

Being a Psychic Type really helps here. With the increasing of Medicham EX, Hariyama EX and Machamp decks, this card will be well seen card in almost every deck. But there's a twist. Even if Mew EX is a Psychic type, which can demolish Fighting Decks, the number of Darkness decks are also increasing. We usually see Umbreon EX, Shiftry, Dragtrodes and Tyranitar EX decks around the tourney area. So, being a psychic type can lead you to victory, or leave you with a burden.

Stages of Evolution

Well, Being a Basic Pokemon, it can be put down, without evolving it from another pokemon. This allows the card to use its attacks quicker and faster without any further delay. But being an evolve pokemon could help. For example, you could use Nidoqueen's Power Lariat to do 10 more damage.

HP( Hit Points )

90HP has its Downside and its Good side.  The good thing is, it can Escape Desert Ruins effect. Downside is, any attack that Can do more than 90 damage can knock it out. With Steelix EX, Meganium EX, And Machamp around, Mew EX could be dangerous. Being an EX, this could mean easy 2 Prizes for your opponent if you're facing a high Damage deck.

Weakness

Weakness to Psychic is kinda normal for a Psychic pokemon like Mew EX. Even though there are Espeon EX, Gengar, Banette EX decks around the tourney area, Mew EX is best used in the Late Game. so, you won't be putting it down so quickly, unless you have to or Unown E is in play.

Resistance

Having no Resistance is good news. Since there is no suitable resistance for Mew EX, it is better to not have a Resistance as Armaldo EX can OHKO it.

Retreat Cost

One Retreat Cost for this little pokemon is suitable as it is considered a small pokemon. This also prevents the effectiveness of Dark Muk. It is easy to discard an energy attached to Mew EX. So, confusing Mew EX wouldn't have much use as it carries a small burden to retreat it.

Poke-Power

Psychic Vision is very useful. When Mew EX is on your bench, you are allowed to look at your opponent's hand. This is a very good combo with Gengar EX and Vileplume d as their attacks are based on the amount of Trainer Cards your opponent has. Not only that, but Hand disrupting Cards like Rocket's Admin and Vaporeon EX can also combo with Mew Ex's Poke-Power. You can first look at your opponent's hand to determine whether they have a good or bad hand. Then you can decide to disrupt your opponent's hand.

Attacks( Part 1 and Part 2 )

Attacks, Part 1

Super Psy Bolt does 30 damage for 2 Energy of any type. This attack is pretty decent as it can do 30 damage by T2. It can also knock out pokemon Like Magikarp and Feebas if your opponent is using a Gyarados or Milotic Swarm Deck. It can also knock out Basic Psychic Weakness Pokemon, like Machop, Meditite, Ralts and Oddish for instance.

Attacks, Part 2

Devo Crush is like a Combination of Devoltion Wave(Cradily) and Psyburst ( Deoxys EX Attack). It allows you to discard 2 Energies attached to Mew EX, then you remove the Highest Stage of that Pokemon and Shuffle it to your opponent's deck. It can make your opponent waste a Rare Candy. Further more, if that pokemon has enough or more Damage Counters to knock out its evolution or Basic pokemon before it, you knock it out. This gives you a free prize.

Decks that have Potential to use Mew EX.

LBS

You can use Energy Rain to attach 2 Energies to Mew EX, then attaching a Holon's Magnetrode, dealing 50 damage to the defending pokemon, and you devolve it.

SMP

The Fact that Metagross (DX) can retrieve Psychic Energies from your discard Pile, you can use 1 Super Connectivity to attach a Psychic energy to Mew EX. Next you attach another Energy to Mew EX, dealing 50 and devolve the Defending pokemon.

Smooth-Draw combo( Wal-cargo, Tyrani-Cargo )

Well, you use Smooth Over with Magcargo to put an energy on top of your deck. Then use Walrein or Tyranitar's Crush Draw Poke-Power To attach that energy to Mew EX. Then again you attach another Energy to Mew EX and attack for 50, while Devolving the pokemon you attacked.

Ratings

Unlimited

Not bad. Has potential with Blastoise and Suicune EX. Could be a tech. But still, not many decks can put this in the deck.

4/10

Modified (HL-on)

With LBS and SMP being used heavily here, you could squeeze 1 in. Also, the heavy usage of Rare Candy could be good news for you.

7/10

Modified( DX-on )

Since Wal-Cargo is Rotated, so as LBS, MMS and Tyrani-cargo would be the most Effective way, but there are going to be an Energy clash. SMP has no energy clash, but it is not one of the best ways.

6.8/10

That's all for my COTW. Hope you enjoyed my card review. Will do lots more.

Okay, today our next review is of the ever-popular Mew EX from EX: Holon Phantoms!  This card, even though it is not as good as it’s Legend Maker counter-part, can be useful for a lot of things.  Now let’s get down to dirty work and examine this card through-and-through.

The Card:
For a Basic EX Pokemon, 90 HP isn’t really that great.  Many Pokemon that aren’t nearly as strong as Mew in the Pokemon Video Games and are Basic Pokemon have most the time 20 HP more than Mew EX.
Its Poke-Power, Psychic Vision, will always be a nice little thing to have with you.
That’s because once during your turn, you may take a look at your Opponent’s hand.  This will always be nice to have a long with you because then you’ll never be ready for any surprises, unless they draw a God card.
His first attack, Super Psy Bolt, is nothing very special.  For two Colorless energies, you can do 30 damage.  That’s pretty much it.  Nothing more.
His second attack is what caught my attention.  It’s like a new-age Rock Lock, because for one Psychic energies and two Colorless energies you can do 50 damage.  But that’s not the special part.  The special part is that if you discard two energies from Mew EX he can remove the highest stage of evolution from your Opponent’s Pokemon and make them shuffle it back into their deck.  This allows you to perhaps knock out the basic underneath, which is very cool.
His Weakness is a given for a Pure-Psychic Pokemon: he’s weak to Psychic.  He does not have a Resistance, so no comments there.  His Retreat Cost is One Colorless, which to me, since he’s the Creator of the World, I’d make it zero.  But that’s just me.

Advantages:
His Advantages are that he’s a Basic Pokemon, so if you want, you can play him immediately.
He also has an incredible Poke-Power that allows you to peek into your Opponent’s hand and take note of what’s going on in there.  Very nice if you’re going first and you have him out, and you don’t know what your Opponent’s playing, so you can then adjust your strategy.
His second attack is also very cool, though a small amount of damage (should be 70), he can pull an ATM Rock or LM Cradily, and remove the highest stage of evolution from your Opponent’s Pokemon.

Disadvantages:
Well he has a small amount of HP for me.  I’d make it 100-110 HP.  He also has a not-so-great first attack, but 30’s pretty decent so I’m not going to really go there.
His Weakness, like always isn’t good.  Psychic is making somewhat of a comeback and he wouldn’t last 2 turns active.
His Retreat Cost, again, for me isn’t that great either.  But if LM Mew EX has the same thing, then I guess they have to make it for this one too.

Analysis:
Well what I’d do to make this card better is make it have 10-20 more HP.  That way it might last longer, and it would have the same amount as most of the other EX Basic Legendary Pokemon.
I’d also make his second attack have at least doing 60-70 damage, because 50 for 3 just isn’t really that great.
I would also make him have a free retreat.

Combos, What are they?
Rock-Lock Tech:  This card might be a useful little tech in Rock-Lock, seeing it's second attack.  And, since Rock-Lock uses Rainbow Energy, he can attack with it.

LBS Tech:  Now, I am sure other people have stated this, but it's pretty obvious.  Say you've Mudslided and they have 100.  Well just Energy Rain, Magnetrode, and de-evolve!!!

Okay, that's all I can see, hope it's helped.

Overall:
Unlimited:  Nobody in their right mind would even think to play this card.  The only reason he’d be in there is that he can look at your Opponent’s hand.  That’s the only reason I would even consider to play him.  3/10

Modified:  He might be a nice little tech in Rock-Lock.  But honestly who plays Rock-Lock anymore?  It’s still a good deck, but it just isn’t as good as it used to be.  But that’s what I’d do with him.  5/10

Limited Sealed Draft: Well he’s a basic, an EX, and can take a look at your Opponent’s hand.  I’d say to definitely run him if you can, as long as you have some decent Psychic stuff.  But the only bad part is that if he gets stuck with zero energies and alone out there, he’s an easy 2 prizes.  I’d give him a 7.5/10

Well that’s Mew EX HP.  I hope you’ve learned something.  See you guys next time.

Mew EX Holon Phantoms

The stats- 90 HP for a Basic Psychic EX Pokemon is GREAT, desert ruins doesn't affect it :D.Psychic Pokemon aren't bad to play right now, fighting is getting bigger. Weakness to psychic is bad. Retreat cost of 1 is fine.

The Poke-Power- Psychic vision lets you look at your opponents hand once per turn. This combos well with rocket's admin, if you see your opponent has a GREAT hand just admin them. I give the power 10/10

The attacks- Super Psy Volt-any 2 energy for 30 damage is good in my book, it would have been better if it confused the defending pokemon but it's still good.

Devo Crush- 1 psychic and any 2 energy to do 50 is good. What's best about the attack is that you have a choice to discard 2 energy and devolve the pokemon. This will ko most pokemon in the game especially candied ones! I love this attack.

Deck Combos

Gardevoir DS and EM/Porygon2/Mew EX HP- I personally play this deck, its record is now 20-5. The strat is to attack with Gardevoir most of them time then use the other gardi for healing. When needed you energy jump energy to Mew EX and play some from your hand then use devo crush to ko the defending pokemon. The deck also uses the Porygon2 engine, which gives a FAST setup.

LBS- Another GREAT tech for this GREAT *but still annoying -_-* deck. But i personally prefer Misdrevious LM over Mew EX HP/LM. You use the Blastoise/ Holon Pokemon strategy to Power up pokemon quickly.

Meganium EX/Steelix EX/Mew EX HP- same strategy as LBS except it heals pokemon

SMP- Use the power of Metagross DX to power Mew EX up

Does this affect the Metagame?
No, not this season. Maybe next season.

Overall rating- 9/10

wow, my favourite card, nice
happy9xx.gif

THE CARD
psychic: nice, most cards have weakness for it.
90HP: well, not good, but not bad either, this makes it able to survive desert ruins.
poké-power: very, very good, this makes you look into your opponent's strategy, too bad it's only once a turn.
attack1: 30 for 2 colourless isn't really good, because it's not T1 material.
attack2: wow, this is one of the best attacks, devolve and damage combined, it destroys most of the stage 1s and stage 2s evolved with rare candy, with a not so big sacrifice, and 50 is decent too.
W, R and RC: well, weakness for itself isn't that big a deal and most psychics have that problem, so it's decent, 1 retreat cost is great, but not extraordinary.

COMBOS
- screw up: my personal invention, a combination of mew ex and dark slowking, see what your opponent needs, don't let him have it.
- M&M's: well, another personal invention, well, yeah, I like this card so much, I spend hours searching strategies, well, this is one, using mew ex HP and mew ex LM, charge with LM and use devo crush with LM, this mean that HP stays on your bench, to keep on using his power
- hand out: just use either vaporeon ex or R's admin to trow away you opponent's hand
- psycho poltergeist: check how many trainers your opponent has in his/her hand, and use poltergeist if he has a lot.
- fast charge: basically the same as we did with steelix ex, it can be a tech in LBS or MMS

that's all I can think of, this card is great, just what we need, something that finally stops rare candy, I use him in my current deck and probably in my dx-on deck. This card is a combination of greatness, and is almost perfect, so I'll give it an almost perfect rating, a
9/10 for this format
9,3/10 for limilited
6,7/10 for unlimited
not just because he's my have pokémon, but it sure helped =P
why a 6,7/10 for unlimited, well, we have rare candy AND pokémon breeder there, so ...

Mew ex is one of the major cards in ex Holon Phantoms.

Positive statements:
Comes in handy with Rocket's admin., Vaporeon ex, Pokemon with poltergeist.
Has a very strong attack, that works well in all formats.
Doesn't get hurt by desert ruins.

Negative statements:
Has only 90 HP.
He needs 2 energys for it's first attack
My suggestion for using Mew ex:

With:

Mew ex from LM, Camerupt from DX and Ho-Oh ex
You play lots of different basic energy types, Camerupt can backburn energys to your Mew ex, if you manage to do this twice Mew ex can use most of all attacks, certainly if you attach a holon's electrode/magneton to it. Or you could use Mew ex to copy Ho-Oh ex's rainbow burn, or Camerupt's split bomb. And when you've done split bomb, almost no evolved pokémon can survive devo crush!

Unlimited:7/10 pokemon breeder and rare candy
Modified:8/10 no Energy removals, so it's easier to get those energies on it.
Limited:9/10 rare candy is in HP, as are lots of pokemon with weakness for Psychic.

Overall; Great card, that will see even more play after the rotation

In today’s review, we shall have a look at Mew ex from Ex: Holon Phantoms. In general, 90 HP is very low for an ex pokemon; yet, it is free from Desert ruins. Other than that, Mew ex has weakness to psychic and has one retreat cost, which all these I have nothing to argue with. Next, Mew ex has a poke-power, psychic vision. It allows you to look at opponent’s hand when Mew ex is on your bench. I think that it is a good poke-power that works in both early and late game. If you have Mew ex on your bench in early game, you can know opponent’s overall deck strategy. Thus, you can take advantage from it and attack its weakness. For example, if you realized that opponent’s deck relies on Pidgeot RG heavily, then you might want to knock his Pidgeot out as soon as possible. In short, this psychic vision poke-power reduces you from taking unnecessary steps or backup. In the late game, this poke-power can stop opponent from drawing more prizes or knock out your key pokemon. For instance, if you have an ex pokemon with 10 or 20 HP left and you realize your opponent has desert ruins in his hand (through psychic vision); you might want to use potion or berry to stop opponent from drawing two prizes (especially if your opponent needs two more prizes to win the game). Then, we shall take a look at Mew ex’s attacks. Mew ex has two attacks, super psy bolt and devo crush. With two colorless, Mew ex does 30 damage to the defending pokemon. Hence, Mew ex can be a good tech since super psy bolt does not need any specific energy to attack. It can be a tech in a deck which is weak against fighting deck, such as lightning deck. It is because most of the strong fightning pokemon are weak against psychic. Medicham ex, Hariyama ex and Machamp are some of the strong fightning pokemon but have weakness against psychic. Mew ex’s second attack is a powerful attack, too. With a psychic energy and two colorless, Devo Crush does 50 damages to the defending and has the similar effect with Haunter’s time spiral attack (LM). Yet, Mew ex is better because it does not require any flip, but discard two energies from Mew ex. Moreover, Devo Crush become more powerful since most of the basic pokemon have 50 HP and players often use rare candy to evolve from basic into stage two pokemon. Even if opponent evolves his pokemon into stage two through stage by stage, Devo crush is still powerful as the highest stage of the defending pokemon is shuffled back into the deck. Therefore, even though opponent evolves his pokemon into Blastoise ex or Pidgeot from stage to stage, opponent still cannot attach extra water energy or do quick search anymore (well, unless your opponent has second blastoise ex or pidgeot on his bench).

Sadly, as I said, Mew ex cannot be your main pokemon but only as tech in current format. One of the main reasons is Mew ex has low HP. Other than that, Devo Crush requires three energies to attack and needs to discard two energies to use the effect. There are some people said Mew ex works with Metagross DX. Nevertheless, Mew ex’s low Hp does not guarantee it can survive for another turn.

There are not much combo for Mew ex. It might be a good tech in Rock Lock deck, as a backup after you used all ATM rock. Other than that, I notice some people said Mew ex’s poke-power works with Golduck d from Holon Phantom. However, I have to point out that before Golduck d attacks; your opponent can shuffle his hand because psychic vision only works once per turn.

In conclusion, most people will only include Mew ex in their deck as tech to take advantage on opponent pokemon’s weakness. Otherwise, it is a nice card to keep in your album after all. So I would give Mew ex a rating of

1 out of 10 in unlimited,
7 out of 10 in limited and
4 out of 10 in current format.

Well, that is all. See you next time. Cheers.

COTW No.6

Mew EX---Holon Phantoms

Now it is time for our sixth COTW to be underway and today is Holon Phantoms’ very interesting Mew EX.

Overview

I will go from top to bottom.
90HP is very good for a Basic, but bad for a Pokemon EX. However it does help it avoid Desert Ruins so it can be of nice help when the dreaded Stadium card hits the floor.

Aaaaaahhhh, the Poke-Power, very interesting indeed...Psychic Vision can enable to look at your opponents hand once per turn. It is very nice and can let you confirm a number of things. These could range from seeing if their hand is good and whether or not Admin it away, seeing what they might be playing next turn (this would give you a huge advantage) or if they have anything worthwhile in there that needs to be discarded (usually by an effect of an attack). It is a great Power and definitely one of the more interesting ones in the format.

The first attack is called Super Psy Bolt, a very basic ©© attack that does 30 damage. It may be alright for a Basic Pokemon in general but it could leave you at a disadvantage if you have Mew Active T1 and because of the cost you will not be able to immediately attack.

But you will not be using Mew for its first attack or even (in most cases) its Power. Devo Crush is a new breed of attack. You may do a straight 50 for (p)©©, but if you discard 2 Energy optionally, you may de-evolve the defending Pokemon by 1 Stage and then shuffle that evolution into the opponents deck. My, this a great move. You could send out an opponent Pokemon and do 50, de-evolve them and then the damage would KO the Basic. And since you are shuffling it into the deck your opponent will not be able to find it again unless they play a search card or draw lucky. If they do get it again, you could just peek into their hand and then Admin it away.
Devo Crush is a brilliant attack and paves way for a new breed or RockLock styled decks…

The Weakness for Mew is Psychic. Nothing surprising but (especially in the next format) there is a lot of Psychic roaming about like Slowking, Espeon EX and Gengar, all posing a huge threat to Mew. It is not the greatest type to be weak to and there is also plenty of Psychic Resistant Pokemon out there as well so beware. However, most the Psychic Pokemon are Weak to their own type so it also give Mew a chance to KO them as well (though Mew comes nowhere near to the firepower mentioned above).

No Resistance is the worst Resistance. But you wouldn’t expect to find anything here would you?

The Retreat Cost is a single ©. It is quite good and easy to pay. Free would have been better but may have been to much, especially for an EX.

Combos

Now the main problem with using Mew EX is finding a way to get around the 2 Energy discard effect coming from the second attack.

The first counter to this that comes to mind is DX Metagross. You can use Devo Crush, use Super Connectivity (twice is best if you have 2 Metagross out), attach and then blast away. It can be a useful Tech in SMP decks.

Next is Blastiose EX. Just Energy Rain all the necessary Energy onto Mew EX and then attack. Power Tree will help you recover the Energy though you may need to heal every now and then if you are going to be doing long rounds of Devo Crushing. Again, a useful Tech in a BLS deck.

Also for Energy attachment included Dragtrode/Mercury. Both work the same except Dragtrode uses Darkness and Mercury uses Metal. Simply use Electrode/Starmie for searching out the Energy, Dragonite/Gardevior moves it onto Mew who then uses Devo Crush. Rinse and repeat. I prefer using Mercury for this since it is easier to find Psychic Energy here.
Once again, it is just a decent Tech for those little troubles you may encounter.

Gengar decks could also make use of it. Gengar uses Cursed Reaction to spread the damage, Mew de-evolves and then Gengar goes back to dies (the resulting damage will KO a few Pokemon) and it gives you enough time to recharge Mew EX. Tech again.

*As you may have noticed, Mew EX is usually a Tech and not a card to base a deck around.

Overall

Mew EX is a very interesting card. It is a bit weak at a glance it can be very powerful when played properly. You will not be basing decks around this card, but you may certainly be seeing it in more than a few. It is also unique as it is the single card that can be used solely as a new-age RockLock and a hand peeker is a very good reason to give this card your attention.

Umlimited: 6/10 Interesting here. It can be of use and it can help in many cases. Shame that there is a pre-dominance of Sneasel here…

Modified: 8.5/10 Great. It brings a new twist to the game and it will certainly be seeing play at the start of the 2006-2007 season.

Draft: 9/10 Very hard to draft but if get it, play it. Look at your opponents hand, get a good start and pretty much OHKO most Pokemon in the competition is more than enough for Mew EX to score here.

And that concludes Mew EX (HP).
