Ruling multi energy and discard pile

What type of energy does multi energy provide while it is in the discard pile? i remember reading that it provides every type of energy while it is in the discard pile but the multi energy provides a specific energy type when it is attach to a pokemon.

It provides nothing while in the discard pile.

It provides 1 multi-colored unit of Energy while attached to a Pokemon.

Not sure where you got the other idea, but it's wrong.
