Mystery Energy: Yay or Nay?

As of now, I'm leaning toward Nay. You're attaching an energy to a Pokemon you want to retreat and it doesn't even reduce the whole cost. If you attach it to Trevenant, you'll have to discard it. The only combo it works with is Wobbuffett as you can switch into it and still attack with dimensional valley. But even there it's a liability thanks to enhanced hammer. With cards that punish you for using special energy, it doesn't do nearly enough to justify putting in decks. Personally, I'd rather use float stone or switch.

I think the risks outweight the benefits when it comes to Mystery energy. It can only be attached to Psychic Pokemon, which limits is playability greatly. While this is also true for Strong and Herbal, their benefits are more direct and help put you ahead by either boosting damage or healing to deny a critical KO, respectively. There's also so many effects out there that either let you retreat for free (Float Stone) or switch your Pokemon without retreating (Switch, Escape Rope, Rush In, etc) that Mystery Energy's effect is obsolete. The deck I would consider running it in is Gengar-EX (and even there you can just use Float Stone).

I agree, it's only real use is in a Gengar EX deck, in which case I find it very useful (would still only run 2 in a deck, max). In a meta where Seismitoad EX's item lock is so prevelant, being able to attach an energy that allows you to retreat can be crucial given that Float Stones, Switch, Escape Rope, etc would all be negated by his attack's effect.

Well, the only viable deck that can use Mystery Energy right now is Gengar. I think in Gengar decks, Mystery Energy is very strong, especially in the variant I play, with Trevenant and Dragalge. You can't always draw the Float Stone to retreat your Wobbuffet or Trevenant, so Mystery Energy really comes in handy in that regard. But the nice thing about the Trevenant/Dragalge variant is Trevenant blocks your opponent's Enhanced Hammers entirely.

There are a few other reasons to play Mystery Energy as well: As totodile said, it's pretty crucial against Seismitoad. If you can't play items, your Wobbuffets and Trevenants will get stuck in your Active spot until they die from Quaking Punch. Also, in Gengar, your opponent's Enhanced Hammers are going to discard your DCEs much more often than your Mystery Energy, so the Enhanced Hammer thing isn't too big of a deal.

tl;dr Yay

Really depends on the deck your playing. I find it amazing in gengar and night march decks...pretty much everything gets free retreat...

Well it depends entirely on the deck, I probably wouldnt run it if the attackers have more than 2 retreat cost... but with 2 or less I like to run 2 mystery energy because that doesn't impact your energy count significantly and the worst that can happen is they enhanced hammer it away and then (since you are probably running something like wobbuffet + dimension valley if you are considering mystery energy) you just put on another energy and can still attack next turn. Its not like you spend many turns powering up attacks in psychic decks so it doesn't seem as hugely detrimental to get hit with hammer when you're probably still attacking next turn. Plus running 2 mystery energy along with 3 switch or something like that gives you so much ability to move around so thats my reasoning at least.

It has uses, I'd say; maybe not huge uses right now but I can see them eventually.

EDIT: Okay, I didn't exactly explain myself very well since I was tired while writing that.

There are a few cards I can see this working for a lot - Mewtwo EX and for less competitive environments, PlS Gallade.

They both have 2 retreat and as a result of Mystery Energy have free Retreat; their attacks are based on colorless which combos into Dimension Valley quite nicely, and they can still gain the buff from Muscle Band. Whatever happens after Primal Clash, their may be more uses there too; I was going to mention that in my original post but I didn't know if I was experienced enough to say that.
