Writing New Idea For FanFic Authors

I use it myself and it's caught on to a few others, and I think everyone should do it who writes a story.

Three simple words:

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Simply put, you hyperlink each chapter of your story to the first post of the story.

While time consuming if you haven't done it yet, it's worth it for two reasons:

1. Allows readers to easily find the chapters they may not have read.
2. Makes it somewhat easier for me to update the library.

I just think it'd be a good idea to have everyone start doing.

Questions comments and concerns are appreciated.

Thank you for your time:

Well, here is another idea. How about you always edit the first page all the time and put all the chapters on the first page so people won't have to look. I always do this. I just update my first post so that is an idea also.

That can be difficult because when editing Pokebeach has a nasty habit of turning " into little squares, it may have not happened to you yet but it does happen.

Do you use Quick or Full Edit? The newer, Quick Edit system is very faulty.

I kinda like the idea of using the first post, im gonna use that now on, too bad im supposted to be studying so i cant copy paist right noe

The first three chapters of my story are the first three posts, so that's not really necessary for me. But starting with the fourth chapter, a link is always in the first post, so I guess I'm already doing it.

I doubt this will happen...people are bothered enough to constatly edit the first post when they could just post the chapet. Poeple can find stuff on their own. So unlewss the mods make this an official rule this won't go over that well.

While I see your point, the editing of the first post is an easy task.

It takes me five seconds to get the link of the post with my latest chapter, copy it, then do a full edit, type

followed by Chapter __:______________

and then type

i mean in all honesty, it's not that much of a daunting task. I can understand if someone with a fanfic that has 70 or 80 pages of posts doesn't want to go back through and locate them, but there are few Fics like that, anyways. I guess this is more for the long fics with a ton of chapters or in PMJ's case, since his first three chapters are all together, he wanted to link his next chapter to the posts.

I guess there can't be an official rule to this, but i'm just saying it'd be nice. I know that once in a while, there's someone who can't get on for a while and has to look through eight pages of posts just to read two or three chapters. If the author simply takes the two minutes to hyperlink his chapters, it'd be nice. This isn't about the convienience to the author, but for the fans.

Well, with the potential length of mine I already started doing this. I haven't exactly got to 80 pages yet, but... I don't care, it makes it easier :p.

I'm also considering (if I ever finish it) putting the complete story as an attached document to the start of the thread. Since I'm writing it in word, I think it might be an idea to give the un-interrupted story at the end of it all, so that you don't have to sift through comments and such like to get to the next section.

I use full edit. The quick edit...too risky. I did it once and it erased everything I had on the page! Thankfully, everything was saved on Word so I was lucky that time. I won't try that again...
