New-ish Player Looking for Viable Decks

Hello!

I am somewhat of a newer player to the TCG and have had quite the resurgence in interest lately. I played a lot of PTCGO from around Plasma Storm to Flash Fire.

I'm not able to make it to events very frequently but tend to play a lot of PTCGO when I have the time.

I feel like I have gotten enough of an understanding of new mechanics and how the game is currently played but I'm unsure on what makes decks viable in the Standard format (Not liking what I see from Expanded).

In the past, I like to build decks around Pokemon that I like (Hydreigon and Charizard EX in the past). Currently, I'm looking at building one of the following, in order of preference: Mega Rayquaza EX, Mega Mewtwo (X) EX, Pikachu EX. However, I'm not sure both on how viable any of these would be and for how long before any of them would be rotated out.

I would really appreciate any help or advice in getting started on playing more of the TCG!

Mega Rayquaza is a decent card competitively (the flying type one, dragon is terrible). not sure about the other 2

[C] Mega Rayquaza-EX is, as Johto King said, decent. It has dropped viability in recent times, especially due to the abundance of [L]-type attackers, however it is still an option as a nice speed deck. Mega Mewtwo-X-EX isn't really that great, as it has a high and awkward attack cost. Pikachu-EX is decent in combination with the Eels in Expanded or Magnezone BKT, although probably can't keep up with the higher tiers that well. All three shouldn't end up being rotated in the next rotation, so you don't really need to worry about that.

Hi spiNR!

So as BBNinjas' has said, M. Rayquaza falls about tier three while Pikachu EX and M. Mewtwo are more of an unranked deck.

Now as in terms of what makes decks viable/tiered decks, what are having difficulty understanding? Is it what cards make it viable or more in terms of strategy and synergy?

I guess I'm more having a hard time trying to figure out what is currently viable in the format.
