XY New Journeys - How Do You Start?

The title says almost all: how do you prepare yourself for a journey, both as a person with the console & game cartridge and then as a trainer. While my focus is the main games, you may speak about journeys you had wih other Pokémon games like the Ranger and Mystery Dungeon series.

So, my main questions are (I won't ask questions about gender and making your character because I'm almost sure there's already a thread for those):

1 - Do you go on a quarantine about news, info. and pictures, do you read/see only some bits of it or are you completely open for everything that might pop up?

2 - Do you read the manual before starting the game?

3 - What was your most memorable beginning?

4 - Once in the skin of the trainer, do you accept the Pokémon that you choose or you soft-reset for a specific nature, gender or shiny?

5 - Do you try right from the start to have a full team of Pokémon or you'll go capturing them as you go along?

6 - Do you start training your starter and, if that's the case, your team, by battling wild Pokémon or do you rely on the trainers ahead to "help" you?

7 - What do you do with the initial money (both what you have and that that you get from the rookie trainers), do you stock up on items, and which ones, or do you save it for later in hopes of findings useful items lying around?

8 - Do you explore your surroundings or just try to reach the nearest town/city?

9- Do you go on a marathon of playing or do you make a pause in order to better "taste" the game without hurries?

1 - Since getting the internet on my computer that being able to resist the temptation has become difficult. While I don't impose myself a quarantine, I do not go reading everything. My main interest is the starters and the protagonists but still I can't resist to take a look at what's leaked and shown, but with caution.

2 - I always read the manual! Reading the manual is just one of those pleasures of getting a new game and feeling that smell of new, that comes out when you open the game case and I always like to see the artwork that decorates some pages, as well the faces of the gym leaders and, last but not least, the introduction to the new region!

3 - Definitly when starting my Blue version. I remember that I bought the game and console adviced by a cousin that lived with me and so there was the protagonist, in a room, and I not knowing what to do and starting to get upset (my mistake was just looking at the instructions booklet instead of reading!) but then I discovered the satirs that took me downstairs and so I calmed down and started enjoying the game. Next whas the journey in Hoeen that I thought was really akward and I thought that the game had frozen because I could not move my character...oh boy.

4 - I'll go with what I get unless it has a gender that I think it doesn't suit the Pokémon.

5 - Back in the old days, I would just go along with my starter and only captured those that I found interesting, not thinking of filling the Pkdex or thinking that despite not being strong or cute some, if not all, are still fun. Now, I go right from the strat filling up my team and boxes.

6 - Most of the times yes, I do start training my whole team in order to avoid unpleasant surprises further along the way, namely when reaching the first gym and also to make the battles with rookies faster and easier because nowasays I just don't have the patience for a Viridian Forest full of Bug-Catchers or something alike.

7 - After finding a shiny Mankey right after delivering Oak's Parcel, I started up stocking up on Pkballs and when it comes to Antidote, I just rely "on the road"!

8 - I always try to explore, not only because I'm filling my team and Pkdex but in hopes of finding something that I mught need to return later and of course, hidden items.

9 - Since I take my time training and exploring, after a while it gets boring and so I make a pause, either a day or just for a couple of hours.

1 - Do you go on a quarantine about news, info. and pictures, do you read/see only some bits of it or are you completely open for everything that might pop up?

Since Gen 4, I've been pretty active in reading the news, looking at new Pokémon, following leaks, etc. Too much work to try and keep myself in the dark, and I enjoy speculating as thinking about rumours as much as the next guy.

2 - Do you read the manual before starting the game?

Nah, though I'll look at the pictures. The entire manual is way too boring and basic, though; I don't need to learn menu controls and what a Potion does all over again,

3 - What was your most memorable beginning?

Probably Sapphire. I played Yellow but didn't play second gen at all and got Sapphire on a whim when I bought my GBASP and was looking for good games. Because I hadn't played a Pokémon game in so long, it was a fresh start, and I enjoyed seeing the new Pokémon and how the game had evolved.

4 - Once in the skin of the trainer, do you accept the Pokémon that you choose or you soft-reset for a specific nature, gender or shiny?

I accept them just as they are. Even if I had the patience to soft-reset (which I don't), I'm much too excited and anxious to start my journey to worry about finding the "perfect" starter Pokémon.

5 - Do you try right from the start to have a full team of Pokémon or you'll go capturing them as you go along?

A bit of both. I tend to lean more towards capturing Pokémon that can be found relatively early in the game, but I won't fill my party just for the sake of it. If a particular Pokémon is under-performing, I might swap them out for a better one later on.

6 - Do you start training your starter and, if that's the case, your team, by battling wild Pokémon or do you rely on the trainers ahead to "help" you?

I prefer fighting trainers since the battles are more interesting and they give more xp. I usually only battle wild Pokémon when I'm looking to capture wild Pokémon in a particular area, or when I specifically need to level more and I've run out of trainers.

7 - What do you do with the initial money (both what you have and that that you get from the rookie trainers), do you stock up on items, and which ones, or do you save it for later in hopes of findings useful items lying around?

I'm kind of a hoarder for both items and money. Most of the time, I'd rather run to the PC to heal rather than use a potion. I do try and stock up on lots of Pokéballs, though.

8 - Do you explore your surroundings or just try to reach the nearest town/city?

Explore, explore, explore. Need to go into every pathway and crevasse, checking for hidden items or trainers. It's the RPG player in me. Never know when you'll find a treasure chest or a Pokéball with something cool in it! I do usually try and make sure I have a few things to restore the various status ailments and revives once I can get them, but otherwise, I don't worry about it too much until it comes to the Elite 4.

9- Do you go on a marathon of playing or do you make a pause in order to better "taste" the game without hurries?

I don't really play a whole lot in a row, just because I have other things to do as well (internet, forums, cleaning/cooking, spending time with my husband), so I don't really marathon, but I don't specifically pause to savour the same or anything, either.

1) I basically read the stuff, at least pertaining to the Pokemon. That makes it easier to determine a team and the best way to train them up as well as how to battle whatever I may find. I leave the cities for later as I play the game. It just depends how much time I want to spend with it.

2) Not at all. No offense but Pokemon is pretty basic when it comes to controls after all. Really I don't look at the manual for any game unless I get desperate.

3) Honestly I'm not really sure I've had one. No shinies, no female starters, just the typical one everyone goes through. Or one could say I've had a bunch simply for the excitement of a new Pokemon.

4) Accept the Pokemon just as they are. In real life you can't/couldn't do that kind of thing and I see no reason to do it just because its a game.

5) I'll get my party filled out as soon as possible but unless I really like that Pokemon I'll switch it out when something I really want comes along. The only exceptions are shinies. My White 2 has a shiny Purloin on it (haven't got far with that because of XY) that I'm mainly training because of being shiny. But 99% of the time I have an idea of who I want to train in that particular run and only change in for shinies. Every now and again I 'cheat' though, since I have had two of every system (or at least acces too them) sometimes I'll get all three starters. Been doing that since Ruby/Sapphire, the only exception was XY for the first run until I got the Xerneas/Yveltal 3ds.

6) Trainers first, wild Pokemon second. If I shoot for a specific level (around the current leaders) I usually need both. Makes me want a lucky egg.

7) I'll spend the money if I want something, you get plenty of it really. Pokeballs are first priority for catching. Maybe some status restores like antidote if the area really needs it. Though I usually prefer going to a center over using the items if possible. Few items restore PP after all and the ones that do are rare and usually not buyable.

8) I'll explore as much as possible. That's usually part of looking for items/trainers to battle and wild pokemon to battle or capture after all.

9) I can play for hours on end, usually with a tv show I half watch on in the background. But I wouldn't call in a marathon. I couldn't play for days straight.

1 - Do you go on a quarantine about news, info. and pictures, do you read/see only some bits of it or are you completely open for everything that might pop up?

Since I'm really curious and always check Pokebeach and other sites for news, yes. I do check the news.

2 - Do you read the manual before starting the game?
After we purchase the game, I don't like playing it while in the car, so I open the box and read parts of the manual.

3 - What was your most memorable beginning?
Every Pokemon game I started was memorable, but I'd have to say Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver because I loved seeing the Pokemon behind me.

4 - Once in the skin of the trainer, do you accept the Pokémon that you choose or you soft-reset for a specific nature, gender or shiny?
I always accept the starter Pokemon. Whether its a female or a male; gentle or adamant, it can still be the perfect loved Pokemon there is.

5 - Do you try right from the start to have a full team of Pokémon or you'll go capturing them as you go along?
My sister and I always go with our favourite Pokemon in the end, but before the end, we choose the Pokemon we want for the journey. So, that means we might not have a full team at the start.

6 - Do you start training your starter and, if that's the case, your team, by battling wild Pokémon or do you rely on the trainers ahead to "help" you?
I always train with Pokemon to a current level before the Gym Leader, then if there are trainers, I battle them for experience.

7 - What do you do with the initial money (both what you have and that that you get from the rookie trainers), do you stock up on items, and which ones, or do you save it for later in hopes of findings useful items lying around?
I always save up money to buy useful items that will help us with the Gym Leaders and other battles. Actually, I would buy anything useful on stock.

8 - Do you explore your surroundings or just try to reach the nearest town/city?
I always explore towns and surroundings for the more enjoyable part of the game. Sometimes, by doing so, I manage to find rare and useful items and battle unexpected trainers.

9- Do you go on a marathon of playing or do you make a pause in order to better "taste" the game without hurries?
I never tend to rush the game. If there's a whole world out there, why rush?

1 - Do you go on a quarantine about news, info. and pictures, do you read/see only some bits of it or are you completely open for everything that might pop up?

I practically search for every spoiler I can find, doing this still made the new games a fun and exciting experience, even though I know what is to come. (mostly)

2 - Do you read the manual before starting the game?

Anyone who do does is just wasting time, we all know how the game controls work..

3 - What was your most memorable beginning?

My Pokemon White Journey, I had a team that I loved and fought with through the entire game, keeping them along no matter what. It made the game a lot more challenging, like how I had to level up the weaker ones with very tedious grinding. (cough cough Sandile) Not my favorite of the Pokemon games, but definitely the one with the best journey for me.

4 - Once in the skin of the trainer, do you accept the Pokémon that you choose or you soft-reset for a specific nature, gender or shiny?

I never soft-reset my starter when playing games, I take what I get and I make them work with me, it makes the experience and bond a lot stronger in my opinion.

5 - Do you try right from the start to have a full team of Pokémon or you'll go capturing them as you go along?

Nope, I try to spread out the Pokemon I catch for my team, I sorta make it a rule for me not to use a 2 Pokemon from the same route on my team, unless I really need/want them both.

6 - Do you start training your starter and, if that's the case, your team, by battling wild Pokémon or do you rely on the trainers ahead to "help" you?

Both, I can usually keep them all in a good level range together, but sometimes a runt falls behind and needs a bit of wild Pokemon battles to bring him back into the group.

7 - What do you do with the initial money (both what you have and that that you get from the rookie trainers), do you stock up on items, and which ones, or do you save it for later in hopes of findings useful items lying around?

I'll buy a lot of medical items and Pokeballs, then just save the rest for a later time if I find something that catches my eye (With this new Gen, it would usually be clothing).
8 - Do you explore your surroundings or just try to reach the nearest town/city?

Explore, I like to get my barrings of the area and check out every house and talk to every person in the game, it all pays off with the loot some of those NPC's give away.

9- Do you go on a marathon of playing or do you make a pause in order to better "taste" the game without hurries?

I'll usually buy the game on the first day, and not stop playing it until it's beaten. This doesn't mean I "rush" per say, I still take my time with the game and enjoy it, but I basically shut off the outside world until I'm post game, which makes the game only last about a 2 or 3 days. (one of the upsides to having no real social life)

1) I try to only use legitimate sources, I don't really like it when I found out about stuff because someone got the game early, I tend to use another website for that ( not going to list it because it's against the rules). I consider corocoro a legitimate source.

2) not really, I just rush straight into playing the game unless I know some piece of important information is in the manual (a code or something)

3) White, boy that game was fun. I hadnt played pokemon in a while so it refreshed my memory and I really enjoyed finding my felvil (liepard) and training it the whole game, it was very enjoyable, especially because I hadn't seen the starters beforehand.

4) I play the game how it's supposed to b played, you choose your trainer gender, get your starter and go :D

5) I capture them as I go, if I find a pokemon that seems interesting or useful I will catch it and if I find one that is totally awesome (liepard) I will use it for the rest of the game.

6) usually I try to keep my pokemon around the same level, I tend to use the strongest pokemon more often but I train the runt to keep him the same level as my others

7) I save it for poke balls, i don't usually spend it unless I see a pokemon I want and go buy poke balls or I'm struggling at a gym and need potions.

8) depends on the area, I don't like exploring in cities and such mainly because some of them are so large but I tend to find every nook and cranny when I am going through a route.

9) I try to play as much as I can, in my first day of playing I will usually get to around the 2-4th gym but I will play more if I have more time. This is different when I do speedruns, I did a solo speedrun with a protean greninja and managed to get it done in around 12-14 hours.

1 - Do you go on a quarantine about news, info. and pictures, do you read/see only some bits of it or are you completely open for everything that might pop up?

I keep up with official news about the game. See pictures of new Pokemon, new characters, etc. but I stay away from specific story spoilers like the ending of games and such. I don't really bother with rumors anymore.

2 - Do you read the manual before starting the game?

Not really, I usually just flip through it and look through it but I don't really read it mainly because it doesn't contain anything I need to read.

3 - What was your most memorable beginning?

That's kind of tough. I guess the most memorable would have to be when I got Crystal along with a Game Boy Color. I ended up playing it to death at the time.

4 - Once in the skin of the trainer, do you accept the Pokémon that you choose or you soft-reset for a specific nature, gender or shiny?

I don't soft-reset. If I want something different, I can usually just breed it after I beat it and trade it to another version if I want.

5 - Do you try right from the start to have a full team of Pokémon or you'll go capturing them as you go along?

I'll only catch the Pokemon that I would want for my team at the time. If there's enough useful Pokes early on, that might mean filling the team up and then cutting the ones that aren't good later.

6 - Do you start training your starter and, if that's the case, your team, by battling wild Pokémon or do you rely on the trainers ahead to "help" you?

I do a bit of both. I won't run from wild Pokemon but I usually start training the Starter against both regardless.

7 - What do you do with the initial money (both what you have and that that you get from the rookie trainers), do you stock up on items, and which ones, or do you save it for later in hopes of findings useful items lying around?

I don't usually buy items other than Balls early on and save it for later when I need Full Restores/Revives.

8 - Do you explore your surroundings or just try to reach the nearest town/city?

I usually try to explore early on in the game but there comes a point in the games where I just gun it for the next town/Gym Leader because most of the time you need HMs to fully explore so I save those areas for the late game.

9- Do you go on a marathon of playing or do you make a pause in order to better "taste" the game without hurries?

I used to take my time through the games but nowadays I just blaze through the main game as fast as possible the first time. The games usually aren't that long if I do so but I can spend a lot of time doing whatever I want to do after I beat it (unless those games are X/Y...).

dmaster out.

1 - Do you go on a quarantine about news, info. and pictures, do you read/see only some bits of it or are you completely open for everything that might pop up?

---Before X&Y, I never really heard about new releases of a new Pokemon game. I just came across the new titles in a store (relatively near the release date). Therefore, I never really knew what to expect and never really googled it. However, now that I'm on PB, I'm very aware of new games and any juicy info that drops with it. While playing the game, I will only look up things if I'm having trouble or want to know which Pokemon are in certain areas.

2 - Do you read the manual before starting the game?

---Of course! I will not even look at or touch the cartridge until I've read ALL of the manual.

3 - What was your most memorable beginning?

---Probably Pokemon Yellow. I was so excited that I got Pikachu as my starter. I also think that this was my first Pokemon game...or Red. But, The Yellow version was exclusively mine, so I have more memories regarding that version.

4 - Once in the skin of the trainer, do you accept the Pokémon that you choose or you soft-reset for a specific nature, gender or shiny?

---I always stay with my first choice. And, I always hesitate before excepting my pokemon, in order to make sure it's the correct Pokemon that I want.

5 - Do you try right from the start to have a full team of Pokémon or you'll go capturing them as you go along?

---In the past, I hardly ever collected Pokemon. I had my main team and only cared about leveling those guys up. Now, I scour the grass and water to make sure I've gotten all Pokemon in that area.

6 - Do you start training your starter and, if that's the case, your team, by battling wild Pokémon or do you rely on the trainers ahead to "help" you?

---In the past, I was all about leveling up my starter (mainly) and battling trainers. I got out of the grass as soon as possible. Now, I'm all over the place. I level up the Pokemon I have on me and battle trainers and wild Pokemon as much as possible in the beginning.

7 - What do you do with the initial money (both what you have and that that you get from the rookie trainers), do you stock up on items, and which ones, or do you save it for later in hopes of findings useful items lying around?

---I normally spend all my money on pokeballs and make sure I have a potion or two. For X&Y, I spent much of my early earning on clothing and hats. ^.^

8 - Do you explore your surroundings or just try to reach the nearest town/city?

---Now, I search everything and make sure I didn't miss any loot or trainers along the way.

9- Do you go on a marathon of playing or do you make a pause in order to better "taste" the game without hurries?

---Marathon. I can play the game all day...but still only make it to the 3rd badge, at most. Even though I go on a marathon, I take me time and savor it that way.

1 - Do you go on a quarantine about news, info. and pictures, do you read/see only some bits of it or are you completely open for everything that might pop up?

I love searching for spoilers around the internet, it often helps me to decide which Pokemon I will/will not use in my team(s)

2 - Do you read the manual before starting the game?

Nope, I usually just start the game and if there is something I can't figure out I just look it up on the internet

3 - What was your most memorable beginning?

Propably Pokemon X. I had preordered it and it came a day early. I was super excited, since I now had something to do on the flight to Dubai, and since I loved pretty much all the Pokemon that I had seen

4 - Once in the skin of the trainer, do you accept the Pokémon that you choose or you soft-reset for a specific nature, gender or shiny?

I just accept it as it is. I'm not really into nature and stuff, and I always hunt shinies after I've completed the game

5 - Do you try right from the start to have a full team of Pokémon or you'll go capturing them as you go along?

I tend to capture all the Pokemon I like, but I usually just have them in the PC. I almost always have a plan/strategy for what I'm using, like with types, moves etc.

6 - Do you start training your starter and, if that's the case, your team, by battling wild Pokémon or do you rely on the trainers ahead to "help" you?

I train on both Pokemon in the wild and on trainers. If I'm looking for a Pokemon in the wld for my team, I usually battle the other wild Pokemon that I don't want

7 - What do you do with the initial money (both what you have and that that you get from the rookie trainers), do you stock up on items, and which ones, or do you save it for later in hopes of findings useful items lying around?

I stock up on Pokeballs, since I'm very good at capturing Pokemon I don't need. When I'm later into the game, I usually also stock up on Hyper Potions and Revives, but that's mostly just for the Gym Leaders, Boss battles and the Elite 4

8 - Do you explore your surroundings or just try to reach the nearest town/city?

I'm all over the place. I try to find every item and every Pokemon I can get my fingers on, and then when I get "bored" I move on to the next city/town

9- Do you go on a marathon of playing or do you make a pause in order to better "taste" the game without hurries?

In the beginning I go on a marathon, but when I get more into the game, it gets more casual.

1 - Do you go on a quarantine about news, info. and pictures, do you read/see only some bits of it or are you completely open for everything that might pop up?

I don't really quarantine myself since I do want to know what the starters will be and what the region is like, but at the same time don't want the adventure to be stale with me knowing every plot point. :p

2 - Do you read the manual before starting the game?

Never. When I was younger, I read almost every game manual there was to learn buttons/combos until I got my first Pokemon game. I don't know why, but I just kind of figured I didn't need it, and it's been sort of a tradition not to read it before starting ever since.

3 - What was your most memorable beginning?

Blue Version for sure. My first Pokemon game, and the first time I saw the all too familiar Professor intro. XD Oh man, do I still love the way Blastoise looked on the cover.

4 - Once in the skin of the trainer, do you accept the Pokémon that you choose or you soft-reset for a specific nature, gender or shiny?

Nope. I just go with what I've got. I treat it as I would in real life...no do overs. It's the partner that I was supposed to get, so that's who I stick with. Bros4lyfe!

5 - Do you try right from the start to have a full team of Pokémon or you'll go capturing them as you go along?

Depends on what's available. In the first few gens, I'd have a team of about 4 or so until almost the 6th gym because I didn't really like what was offered or had a decent poke with similar stats/typing already. However, gen 5 and 6 kind of spoiled me with really good Pokemon in the first few routes, so I tend to fill up my team rather quickly and find myself training almost 15 Pokemon at a time throughout the entire game. It can get rather tedious. For example, I'm on my 3rd playthrough of Y, and I've only just got my second badge and I started almost 2 months ago. In my defense, my Pokemon are all level 50 right now...all 17 of them. XD

6 - Do you start training your starter and, if that's the case, your team, by battling wild Pokémon or do you rely on the trainers ahead to "help" you?

Yea, I battle everything and everyone I see unless it's a poke that I haven't caught yet. Gotta catch em all!

7 - What do you do with the initial money (both what you have and that that you get from the rookie trainers), do you stock up on items, and which ones, or do you save it for later in hopes of findings useful items lying around?

Well, I usually buy Pokeballs first, and this might sound weird to some people, but I really hate having weird numbers of items in my inventory. (Ex: 7 Pokeballs) It kind of drives me nuts, so I buy in increments of 5 or 10 depending on the item. Then, I get potions and all of the status healing items/escape ropes are last. As I progress through the game, I tend to have tons of unused potions/ice heals since I find those most often, and when I look through my inventory I notice there's some random number of them there, so I either have to sell them or buy more to make the number more even. Weird I know. Don't judge me! XD At least I'm prepared....I guess.

8 - Do you explore your surroundings or just try to reach the nearest town/city?

I definitely like to explore. I love finding secrets whether they be items or locations. I want to explore every nook and cranny of the map to see what the developers have created and get the full experience as intended.

9- Do you go on a marathon of playing or do you make a pause in order to better "taste" the game without hurries?

Usually what happens for me is I'm so excited for the game to come out that as soon as it does I spend the next week playing it nonstop, and then after the adrenaline has worn off I look down at my 3ds and notice that the end credits are rolling. Lol Then, I do the post-game stuff sparingly and then it's off to competitive battling!

1 - With XY I went insane with constantly knowing every new piece of news, at all times.

2 - No, I skim through it.

3 - Yellow Version. I was pretty freaking pumped as a kid!

4 - I used to not care and just play, now I soft-reset for half an hour for shinys, then I soft-reset for natures of I don't get a shiny.

5 - Capture as I go?

6 - I grind on wilds. I battle every trainer, but I don't count on them to help me.

7 - I always play nuzlocke anymore, so I hardly ever save a lot of coin.

8 - I explore everything! Every single square in the game.

9- I'll play for a few days, break, then play some more... I'm also a serial restarter... that doesn't really help me out :D

1) I do read news about the new regions (i.e. the villainous teams, several new Pokemon, and gym leaders) but I don't go watching LP's until I've fully beaten it.

2) I never actually read the manual since the game kinda tells you the things that the manual does like what Pokemon Amie is, for example.

3) I feel like my most memorable beginning was at the start of my first time playing through HeartGold, my first Pokemon game. I got a shiny Cyndaquil with 3 perfect IVs

4) Nope, I don't soft-reset for perfect starters

5) I mostly just catch what I think is cool. Like in Gen 5, I'd never catch Patrat unless a Nuzlocke forces me to, since I know it's bad. I might skip catching a Roggenrolla and instead catching a Blitzle

6) I mostly just grind on wilds since I usually have around 4 Pokemon by the 2nd or 3rd Route

7) I'll usually buy a Pokeballs until I've got about 10 and spend the rest on Potions and things to heal Status Effects depending on what Pokemon are native to the Routes I'm on

8) I LOVE exploring every crevice of the new Routes to see just how much the region can offer. Dodging the beautifully crafted scenery and just going straight to each city seems disrespectful to Game Freak

9) I definitely take breaks. I mean, yeah I'm super excited when I get a game from a new generation, but I don't just play straight through a game and beat it in a couple of days. It just seems like, even when I play slowly and put myself on a continuous grind regimen in the wild, it all seems like the game goes by so fast.
