New Player - Looking For a Deck to Counter M Mewtwo and M Ray

Hello everyone! I'm new to this website/forum new to the tcg. I've collected the original cards from base set thru the team rocket set and I kind of fell of after which I regret big time. Pokemon Go reignited my insane love for Pokémon and I decided I'd actually want to play the card game competitively. I planned to run this deck but I was told on the PTCG subreddit that it's a good deck but no longer really viable with the loss of muscle band, az & super scoop up. So now idk what I should run since everyone is going to be playing M Mewtwo & M Ray. I thought of running M Gardevoir or M Scizor as counters for M Mewtwo but I was told Volcanion & M Ray defeat M Gardevoir & Volcanion beats M Scizor so now I'm really lost about which deck to run. I really want to play competitively & hopefully win. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks :)

Here's the deck list of what I was planning to run:

Pokémon
4 Serperior FAC 7
4 Servine FAC 6
4 Snivy FAC 5
2 Ariados AOR 6
2 Spinarak AOR 5
2 Shaymin-EX ROS 77

Trainer

2 Devolution Spray
3 Level Ball
2 Revitalizer
1 Super Rod
4 Trainer's Mail
4 Ultra Ball
4 VS Seeker

1 Giovanni's Scheme
1 Lysandre
1 Pokémon Ranger
4 Professor Sycamore
2 N
1 Teammates

4 Forest of Giant Plants

Energy

8 Grass Energy

That's not a bad list to start with. Although (at least in my area), these big mega/big ex decks would eat up Serperior. While Zygarde would have a little trouble due to weakness, Rayquaza wouldn't even need to run sky field to take out your Pokemon. You would have to run parallel city to counter it, but I think that matchup would be fighting up a steep hill since it will easily start swinging by turn two with ease for a stream of OHKO's. Mewtwo doesn't need more than 4 energy on itself (easily fed by mega turbo or two double colorless) to start knocking Pokemon out. Since you won't be OHKO'ing Mewtwo they could afford the time to take two full turns to be set up. Garbodor shuts down Servine's ability which is one of it's highlights, as well as the Ariados making it more difficult to take knockouts for you. It's also hard to stream Serperior's attacks if you get one shotted almost, if not every, turn.

If I were going to compete, I would play a deck that has more durability, and either a lot of power or disruption. Dark Box could be a very solid list to play, especially with Umbreon and Ninja Boy for surprise 4 prize knock outs on all these megas running around. Scissor Ex is more of a disruptive list. Depending on your play style, either one could be a good match if you're looking to go against the mewtwo/Ray decks instead of with them.

I hope the above helps a little, and welcome to the Pokemon TCG! :)

Thank you for the welcome! :) and about the deck, i kind of figured it wouldn't be as viable anymore /: the dark box you mentioned really caught my attention but can't find a deck list. could you please provide me with one? and is this the darkrai/giratina/garb deck? thanks again! i really appreciate the help :)

This is another Pokebeach deck garage list that will give you an idea of what a list could look like: http://www.pokebeach.com/forums/threads/dark-toolbox.135748/

Darkrai/Giratina is it's own deck. A Toolbox deck is a one that has different answers to choose from to win a match. Dark Box has attackers like Yveltal EX (damage output), the two basic Yveltals (Fright Night to shut off opposing tools, Oblivion Wing for set up purposes), Umbreon EX and Ninja Boy (for taking extra prizes), Zoroark and Float Stone (mobility, damage output), and other cards like that. There isn't a super focused strategy on one pokemon, but the goal of the deck to to have a variety of different strategies to answer to opposing decks.

I don't know if I explained that all too well, but it's a deck I plan on building soon. It looks like a lot of fun - especially when you set up one pokemon and Ninja Boy into another that better deals with the other deck as needed. I'm no expert though. I don't know how well it actually works since I've haven't had a chance to run it yet.

This thread has been moved to TCG Player Help and Advice. The thread creator is asking for advice on the metagame's current decks rather than imporving the decklist in the thread. If you have any questions, please message me privately.

If you're worried about those specific decks (MMew/MRay), then why not counter with some combination of Regice, Glaceon, Jolteon?

Very, very true! I run this somewhat decent M Glalie deck in the online game and regice saves me a lot haha
