New players, Limited to XY

My 8 year old daughter and I are just starting out in the Pokemon CG. I bought a box of booster packs and two XY starter boxes, so we have duplicates of nearly every XY card (just missing a few EX), I know that limits variety, but it seemed to be the best jumping off point while giving us the longest value for my buck. I can fill in singles down the road as needed and as she gains experience.

For now though, can you recommend some cards or themes to build a couple decks using only XY? I know the lack of diversity will keep us from making very strong decks, but as long as she can have fun and get the basics down, we can grow when new sets arrive. I was thinking limiting decks to one type plus normal to keep the energy management simplified.

Well, as you only have XY cards some good decks you can make are:

Greninja/ Blastoise EX
Fairy

Well, that's all I can think. You can also wait until the new set is released, good cards will come.
 
A Fairy/Dark deck would be your best bet. Those are insanely strong: Xerneas, Xerneas EX, Spritzee-Aromatisse, Slurpuff, Yveltal, Yveltal EX.

Xerneas - Searches your deck for Fairy energy to fuel your bench.
Xerneas EX - Does 60 damage and 30 to one benched Pokemon. Also will be able to OHKO new Dragon cards that are weak to Fairy.
Aromatisse - Probably the most important card in any Fairy deck. Its ability allows you to move your Fairy energy around your Pokemon, as often as you like.
Slurpuff - Its ability states that any of your 'mons with Fairy energy attached to it do cannot be affected by a special condition (poison, sleep, etc.).
Yveltal - Not really a good fit in a Fairy deck, but its first attack needs one Darkness energy for 30 damage, and you can attach a Darkness energy from your discard pile to one of your benched.
Yveltal EX - You only need one Darkness energy attached to this one (plus any other kind of energy) to use its first attack, which does 20 right off the bat, plus 20 more for each energy card attached to this Pokemon AND your opponent's active.

The theme decks are also a very good option. You are able to take the main cards out of the theme decks (e.g. Xerneas and Aromatisse) and combine them with other great cards from XY (e.g. Xerneas EX). You'll be there in no time!
 
One of the really good cards in that set that i was trying to tell people about before the set was even released was Raichu. You can use it with just about anything, it attacks for one Double Colorless energy and can do up to 120 damage 100 without muscle band, 120 with. You can try your hand with different secondary attackers/benchsitters, but the ones that stand out to me are Tauros and Swellow. Youll get the most bang for your buck against the already powerful decks with a combo like that. Swellows ability forces your opponent to change their active, and Tauros, when used properly, can be a real beast against EX cards and get you that 2 for 1 prize trade you need. Also, a Lunatone/Solrock deck can do very well as either support for Raichu or played on its own =) Hope this was helpful XD
