New Pokemon Trainer Seeking Advice - Looking for a Fun but Competitive Deck

hey folks,

I'm brand new to Pokemon I have been playing magic but I'm looking for a change and Pokemon seems an awesome fun way to go. I have no experience playing Pokemon TCG so have no idea what cards are about or where to start so it's a little daunting at the moment. I played fast hard hitting decks in Magic and this is my only experience in a card game.

I'm looking to build something that can be competitive and shop events but I'm mainly looking for just enjoyment and collecting the cards aswell as enjoying good games with a some I win some I lose kind of attitude.

I know this probably may not hold any impact on the deck I build but I usually run a group of Pokemon mix of fire water electric and fighting in the actual Pokemon game and my favourite Pokemon is psyduck first Pokemon that I ever saw and since the he has always held a special place in my heart lol

Any and all help and advice would be greatly appreciated because I can't wait to get started on such an awesome game and the people I have met so far have been awesome so really looking forward to getting some games in.

Welcome to the game!

Since you say you have no experience with the TCG, I highly suggest downloading the Pokemon Trading Card Game Online (free for PC or mobile) and playing through the tutorials. It'll introduce you to the basic rules through a more hands-on approach as opposed to reading a guide, and give you a glimpse into what the game may be like competitively when turned up a couple hundred notches. I think this is an important step before you begin investing in deck staples and the like.

Then, be sure to read through the guides we have available in this topic to help get your Trainer quest started:

Also, luckily for you, Golduck Break comes out in a couple months and is looking to be a pretty great card, so your love for Psyduck may soon be realized in TCG form after all. :p

I have downloaded the online card game hadn't got a clue what I was doing with the cards so just used one of the free preloaded decks and I really enjoyed playing it thought it was brilliant. Found it nice to get to grips with really liked it.

Those guides are excellent really informative I will be rereading them I'm sure I have missed or not understood stuff lol

Is psyduck already in circulation as well as golduck? I know I should really decide on style of play and that sort of thing but at the minute my heart ruling my head and I just wanna play with the Pokemon I loved growing up all my favourite ones lol

Got a feeling this is going to be huge fun collecting and playing

There's currently no Psyduck available in Standard rotation (XY-On). But in Expanded (BW-On) there are two Psyduck and two Golduck in the Boundaries Crossed expansion.

I wouldn't worry too much about establishing a style of play quite yet. Just enjoy the game for a while (and use Psyduck if you want) until you've got a good feel for how cards can work together and the typical order of play. If you start focusing too much on being competitive so early, you're bound to become overwhelmed.

How would I be able to see what cards are legal ideally I want to collect them all anyway or should I say catch them all lol bad joke I know lol I will be getting a psyduck and the older characters that I grew up with because they are just awesome.

Great advice buddy I must admit I'm not to fussed about the competitive side I just wanna play and have fun and win the odd game or two and just not get owned every time I play but main thing is I wanna enjoy playing and enjoy collecting I wanna enjoy the cards I'm playing with not just use them because they are supposed to be the best deck or most competitive deck at the time I just wanna have good clean Pokemon fun lol

The legal cards for Standard are all sets printed from XY base (technically Kalos Starter Set) and later. The legal cards for Expanded are all sets printed from Black & White base and later. An easy way to check from here on Pokebeach is to click the TCG button on the top of the page, and you'll see additional tabs for Standard and Expanded, etc.
