Hi there I am new to the pokemon tcg and have some questions about competitive expanded deck building :)

Q1: What cards should I be getting for this years events any must haves?

Q2: What cards have bean baned in the expanded form this year.

Q3: Is it a good idea to buy some good tins and trainer box's with some packs and see what I get and make a competitive expanded deck from that or should I just get single cards?

Q4: Could I use a Tapa lele GX World championship cards in expanded format?

Q5: If I use the idea in Q3 what box's, tins and packs should I get?

Q6: My last question is there any other things and cards I should know about?

Any advice and help is greatly appreciated thanks - djcjf

Q1: Zoroark GX, Buzzwole GX Tapu lele GX, Lycanroc GX, Professor Sycamore, N, Cynthia, Max elixir, rescue stretcher, field blower, Bridgette, Brooklet Hill, Guzma, tapu koko promo, Garbodors (BP) (GAR), Double Colorless Energy...ect. (For standard)

The list goes on and on but for more info look at decks that have done really well in the past tournaments and things to help see what cards are good. I'm just saying, Buzzwole GX and Zoroark GX are really good and can both be paired with Lycanroc GX. (Midnight Form)

Q2: You can look up banned cards on the Pokemon website, and there are also some videos on you tube as well. (the biggest card was forest of giant plants (AOR)

Q3: This is hard to answer, if you get tins and packs than you don't know what you are going to get and you could get something really good. But if you get singles than you can get exactly what you want so it really depends.

Q4: No you could not. In free play though like just playing with friends than you could but at a big tournament than no you could not.

Q5: Probably go for Guardians Rising (Has Tapu Lele GX and other good cards), Burning shadows (Has Gardevoir GX, Guzma, and other stuff), Shining Legends (Has Zoroark GX witch is OP), The new Ultra Prism witch just came out (Has Glaceon GX, Cynthia, and other stuff), and if you really want to then Crimson Invasion (Has Buzzwole GX, and Silvaly GX but that's all). You could also get Break Point and Break through witch has Sycamore, Max Elixir, and Bridgette.

Q6: If you are getting into Pokemon maybe start watching Pokemon You Tube videos (How I actually got good in two years LOL) to see how decks work and see what cards are good and test them out too find out how you play, what decks you like, and what makes decks really tick. To test out different decks, you can use Proxies while playing at a local league or with friends, but not in tournaments.

Good luck getting into Pokemon and I wish you good luck in the Future,

and as always ,

Hope I helped! :)

Hey @djcjf, welcome to Pokebeach! I would be happy to help you with building a competitive Expanded deck.

A1: First thing I would try to get is staples for the Expanded format, such as VS. Seeker, Ultra Ball, Prof. Sycamore, N, Guzma (or Lysandre), Shaymin EX, and Colress for starters (if you don't know what these cards do you can search their definitions on TCGPlayer.com or Pokémon.com). There are a lot of other cards, but some are used in specific decks like Max Elixir in Turbo Dark (Darkrai EX) and Wally in Trevenant (the one form XY). Depends on what deck your building.

A2: Here is a link to all of the know banned cards for both Standard and Expanded (leading to Pokémon.coms resource).

A3: When it comes to buying singles (such as individual cards) over packs, since your not guaranteed to get the cards you need. If you were to get a box though, the best one they have would be a Zoroark GX box (Zoroark GX is one of the most popular and successful cards in Expanded at the moment).

A4: Unfortunately, World Championships cards aren't legal for tournament play, but they act as great proxies to practice with. Make sure you have the real thing if you play in tournaments!

A5: Mentioned in A3.

A6: There are so many different types of decks in Expanded, each with their own unique strategy and cards. I can't list all of them, but if you look around here on Pokebeach and on Pokémon.com (look at the tournament results for Expanded tournaments) you'll find the core uses of cards and what you should play. I would suggest you try building a list similar to the ones on Pokémon.com and edit as you see fit.

Anyways, I hope this helps and good luck with Pokémon! Let me know if you need anything else!
