New to VGC Team

This is the first team that I built by myself. I'm still pretty new to VGC and was looking for someone to help me improve it. A flaw with this team is that I believe I have too many physical attackers and therefore It's weak to intimidate, which isn't good considering that manectric and mawile are quite common in VGC. I'm also not sure if I should include some sort of support pokemon such as sableye or meowstic.

Talonflame @ sharp beak
Ability: Gale Wings
Adamant 252 Atk / 252 Hp / 4 SpDef

- Roost
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- U-turn

I can't really find an item I'm happy with for this one. Life orb makes the recoil damage too much, while I didn't like being trapped into just one move with the attack choice item. For now I'm using sharp beak to give BB a 20% boost, however I think there are probably better items for Talonflame, I'm just not sure what.

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
Relaxed 252 Hp / 148 Def / 108 SpDef

- Gyro Ball
- Protect
- Leech Seed
- Power Whip

I love ferrothorn. He can take so many hits and then heal it off with leftovers/leech seed like it was nothing. My favourite guy on this team, and one who I definitely don't want to remove. Fire is a real threat to him though, very rarely not ohkoing him. I've tried to include lots of fire counters in this team though.

greninja.png

Greninja @ Expert Belt
Ability: Protean
Timid 252 Speed / 252 SpAtk / 4 Hp

- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Dark Pulse
- Extrasensory

I'm not entirely sure if that's the best move set for Greninja, but it seems to cover quite a lot. Having protect on him would be nice, however I'm not sure if it's the best option. I've also had a bit of trouble with Hydro pump missing at crustal times, so I'm considering changing it to surf or even scald.

Mamoswine @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Thick Fat
Adamant 116 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Spe

- Ice Shard
- Icicle Crash
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide

Mamoswine helps a lot against things this team is weak against. He has a strong eq which helps counter electric/steel/fire pokemon as well as ice against dragons and grass pokemon. His thick fat ability makes fire only do neutral damage, rather than super effective, and gives him a nice resistance to ice. His Evs/choice item allow him to outspeed garchomp, and allow him to ohko with icicle crash. Out of all the moves I haven't found ice shard particularly helpful, especially since Mamoswine is quite speedy with the evs and his choice item.

kangaskhan.gif

Kangaskhan @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Scrappy (-> Parental Bond)
Jolly 252 Atk / 252 Hp / 4 Spe

- Return
- Power-Up Punch
- Fake Out
- Sucker Punch

Mega-Kangaskhan is such a good attacker, hitting twice with each move. Double fake out is quite strong, and can often get less bulky pokemon to less than half while flinching them. Power-up Punch offers a way to get +2 attack each time it's used.

noivern.png

Noivern @ Life Orb
Ability: Infiltrator
Timid 252 Sp Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Hp

- Flamethrower
- Air Slash
- Draco Meteor
- Taunt

I haven't found this one particularly useful lately, and I'm thinking of replacing him with someone like Rotom-wash.

RE: Quite new to VGC team

Nice team you got there, and I agree, pokemon who have intimidate or are physically bulky are going to be a challenge for you.

I would recommend removing Noivern, since he doesnt exactly have anything special to him.

Give the Life Orb to Talonflame to power up his moves, but don't worry about having too much damage, you'll easily heal it off with Roost. Or you can consider having Weakness Policy, it is quite expensive but it's worth it. Every time Talonflame is hit with a super effective move you get a 50% boost to both his defences, you can then heal off the damage with Roost and their attacks aren't nearly as strong as they were before. The more they try the stronger your defences. You should consider it.

I'll think of someone to replace Noivern since he has too much weaknesses, and unlike Dragonite and Salamence, he can't defend himself from them too good. But Rotom-Wash is a good choice!

RE: Quite new to VGC team

That's... not how WP works, though. It boosts your Attack and Special attack, and I'm pretty sure the first use consumes it, but I could be wrong.

As much as I love Noivern, I too must advise you to drop it.

Finally, you NEED Protect.
On every last Pokemon. It just makes everything easier.

RE: Quite new to VGC team

Yeah I searched it upp, could never be asked to edit my post,

I had another look in the team to see what you're lacking, I won't have dragonite and the likes since you've already got flying type covered, but I think a Goodra would be quite good

Modest Goodra @ Assault Vest/???
Any of the 2 (I believe there are) natures.
-Dragon Pulse
-Sludge Wave/Bomb
-ThunderBolt
-???/Dragon Dance
Ok here's the thing, Goodra only has one type, so it can't abuse 2 stab moves of diff types, but it boasts being a pseudo-legendary with a whooping 600 base stats. Dragon Pulse for STAB and to get a dragon move in your team, Sludge Wave or Sludge Bomb, whichever works for you is for coverage along with Thunderbolt, I am not sure what to have for the 4th move but if you want the assault vest to work you have to have a damaging move and not a stat changing or status move, butt if you want a different item then use Dragon Dance for the help with sweeping/revenge killing, both work well with Goodra. The assault vest works good because it raises te sp.def by 50%, helping you deal with ice, dragon and fairy types since most of their moves are special attacking moves.

RE: Quite new to VGC team

Dragon Dance on Goodra is pointless, since Goodra is ridiculously slow and doesn't use physical moves. I suggest going with a Fire move in the last slot if you wanna use it.

RE: Quite new to VGC team

I had nothing else to put on him, if Goodra learns Flamethrower then that's the last slot done. But the +2 speed would have been helpful anyways

RE: Quite new to VGC team

Oh, ok, I didn't know (I'm quite the newb at the mechanics as I started this generation)

RE: Quite new to VGC team

DD is worthless regardless since Assault Vest limits to only using damaging moves

I know, I mentioned it!

RE: Quite new to VGC team

Hey there i saw that this was a VCG team and wanted to help! Since this is VGC a lot of Smogon sets dont work as well. Also they play by a "Bring 6 use 4" which mean that you can only use 4 pokemon in one battle and it is double battle set up.

Saying that the set you have for your ferrothorn isnt all that good for VCG because it will grt hit with a special attack that will get OHKO even with investment. I think that you should change its IV's to be more of Bulky attacker.

Also protect is a very good thing to have on VGC, so having it on more pokemon is useful.

I hope ive helped!

RE: Quite new to VGC team

I've found that in my testing with VGC this gen (as I am fairly new to it as well) That two water types is a nice thing to have. A lot of Water types get great move coverage and can be really good in a pinch when you need them to be. Some of my set ups have been like this:

Rotom-Wash @ Safety Goggles
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 116 SAtk / 116 SDef / 24 Spd
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp
- Protect

With one of these two. But there is always two water types

Clawitzer @ Assault Vest
Ability: Mega Launcher
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef
Modest Nature
- Water Pulse
- Aura Sphere
- Dark Pulse
- Dragon Pulse

Greninja @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Surf
- Dark Pulse
- Mat Block/Protect
- Ice Beam

Rotom is used to start whittling down Amoongus, since they like to Spore turn one if they lead, along with Mega Venusaur. That way you can just burn them and start bringing them down slowly with your team support. Talonflame can dispatch of both, but you must be careful that they do not Spore T1, which is partly why I use U-Turn / Protect on him.

Clawitzer is a pure Bulky Special Attacker. I have not done a lot of testing to see how well he does, but from what I've done so far its worked really well.

Greninja is obviously a Special Sweeper, who also must be carefully used in VGC due to the speed of the format. Mat Block or Protect is your choice, as the rest of the moves are for type coverage.

Hope I helped!

RE: Quite new to VGC team

If this is a bit late for this thread I'm sorry, but if you could, I would suggest taking the Expert Belt off and giving your Greninja a Life Orb ^ ^
