Old Player Looking For Info

Hey guys. Me and a few friends of mine used to play Pokemon about 10 years ago, and we're starting to get back into it now. Obviously, being 10 years ago, all the cards we have are (what looks to me like) 1st generation (fossil, team rocket, etc).

My question is, if we get back into it now and want to expand our decks a bit, can you mix them with newer cards? I was just getting refreshed on wikipedia with what's out there, and am amazed with how is out there now!

Looking on ebay to pick up some cards, and everything from our generation looks pretty expensive (I guess cause they're older?).

So, can you mix and match and it still works? or should I try to find stuff from back when we played to expand?

If your planning on going to events or most league's you need to play in the legal format. That is considered: DP Magestic Dawn- onwards. Although some of your old cards can probably be traded for newer ones so you guys can play. But no, nothing you have is probably legal. But for fun, you can always do whatever you want.

No, no tournaments, just a bunch of friends playing against each other, sharing the same group of cards and making decks.

Just trying to get an idea on what to target when I hit ebay for some cards.

hey, im actually in the same boat as you are. found some of my old cards when i moved out, and got nostalgic. so i bought a few theme decks and played around with my roomates and my girlfriend.

if you want to have fun, and like how the game use to be played, i would suggest playing with cards from heartgold soulsilver and onwards.
bulbapedia is a good place to look up each subsequent set as well as the card list.

hgss(heartgold soulsilver) has similar game mechanics as the original pokemon
nowadays, decks(competitive decks) played in tournaments are very fast pace and alot of them are based on pokemon SP (Special pokemon owned by trainers that are considered basic pokemon, instead of their stage 1 or 2 evolved forms) -bulbapedia for more info
they can also get quite expensive $100+ dollars for a competitive deck

i would study some cards and pick out a few fun pokemon you want to make a deck around.
there are new pokemon called PRIMES. stronger pokemon with shiny borders in the hgss series

things needed to play:
basic energies, you can get these if you dont have them already from theme decks.
its a good way to get basic energy and trainers/supporters, also the new theme decks from HS-Undaunted onwards contain extra booster packs

also some bulk cards of basic and uncommon pokemon will be needed to base your deck around. then are the more expensive items. you can always check out the selling threads here or on ebay as well as other pokemon card shops like troll and toad etc.

Although it is possible to play in "unlimited" format (where cards from any sets may be used), it won't work very well if most of your cards are the early cards. One big problem is "power creep"; over the past decade many cards have gotten much more powerful, with attacks that were inconceivable back then (like Machamp's "Take Out"). If you don't want to just play with newer cards, one option might be to use your old Pokemon character cards, but add some of the best special energy, trainer, supporter, and stadium cards from later sets. Another option might be to buy the four 2010 World Championship decks, and then you and your friends each pick one at random to play each other.

Or you could just play Poor Man's Pokemon: sleeve 60 energy cards, then print the images of whatever cards you wish to play with, cut them out, and insert them into the front of the sleeve.

You could also check out some of the cards for the EX series, particularly EX Dragon Frontiers and EX Delta Species. Most of those cards are all extremely fun to play with, and they are not so old as to be extremely expensive, but they are not so new as to be considered playable and therefore worth more.
