that you CAN use cards from before the modified format. Last year the guy with the Dark Tyranitar deck used Dunsparce from Sandstorm! Wouldn't that be illegal?

yes,but Dunsparce,was actually part of the legal set list,& as of now is modified to lose the e-reader barcoding
Same with Sandstorm Lombre and Lotad? (Erg will somebody give me this years legal set list?)
