Ruling Order of solving question

So I have Skarmory as my active with 2 Special Metal Energies. And my Skarmory has 20 Hp Left.

My opponent attacks with Dragonair's Twister attack and flips 2 Heads having my skarmory discard the 2 special Metal Energies.

Now my Question:

Do I reduce the damage done by Dragonair due to the Special Metal and then discard the energies, or just kill of my skarmory? The way I solved this was using my YuGiOh knowledge, order of happenings. Do the damage, but reduce it first, and then discard, but my friend said I discard the energies first and then do the 20 damage, killing off Skarmory.

Always damage first, then any other effects the attack may have.

In this case you count the damage done to Skarmory (metal energy reduce included). Then remove the energys.
