The purpose of this article is to outline the various roles individual Pokémon have in the OU metagame. If you're looking for a specific role for your team, look here! All Pokémon listed here have some degree of viability in OU. If you'd like to propose an addition to the list, feel free to post!
Please keep in a mind that a single Pokémon set can fulfill multiple roles for a team, and so the same Pokémon can appear multiple times in the set. Due to a restriction on how many images can be in the same post, this guide will be split into several posts.
Mega Pokemon:
Mega Evolutions are by no means a requirement on a team. However, most teams can benefit from including a Mega Evolution on them! The roles that they fill are listed below, but do keep in mind that you are limited to only one Mega Evolution on your team.
Wallbreakers/Stallbreakers:
Physical:
Special:
Mixed:
Stallbreakers:
Most teams will require some degree of offensive presence, which is where these attackers come in. Physical attackers will mainly use physical attacks, while special use special attacks. Some of these Pokémon are blessed with high speed stats, which gives them a much greater sweeping power, such as Tapu Koko and Mega Metagross. Others may require a boosting move to be capable of breaking walls, like Azumarill or Zygarde.
The main role of a wallbreaker, as the name implies, is to break down walls on the opponent's team. They aim to do as much damage as they can before fainting, which can open up the opportunity for another attacker to win.
Mixed attackers usually lack the offensive presence as other attackers, but make up for it with the ability to hit both physical and special walls hard. An example of this would be Pheromosa. They may also offer other utility for the team, like U-Turn or Stealth Rock.
