Pidgey TM as a starter?

I understand we already have some good starters in this format (cleffa and stantler/minum) but this seems like a decent card with messenger as say you want to get an evolution into your hand and you had already played a supporter this may work. You wouldn't need to worry about burning away an energy as this shuffles pidgey and the energy away. Thoughts?

Oh, I like it! It is harder to kill than Cleffa late game, and also doesn't take up a bench space, and unlike with Cleffa, you know what you are getting. If you already have the basic on your bench, you could search out the Stage 1 that you need. Unfortunately it does take one of your energy, but it might be worth it, it is a card worth testing for sure.

While you do get the energy back, it still takes an energy away that you could've laid down that turn. However, the main reason I don't like Pidgey is that you have to send something from your bench to the active position, and unless you have another starter laid down that you don't care to get possibly KO'd, you will just about have to send out a tech or an unevolved attacker, and your opponent will definitely take advantage of that. On top of that, it's only use is for one turn, whereas Cleffa or Stantler you can get 2-3 turns from it, which will just about always be more useful than getting out 1 card.

^True, but I still ran it, back when it first came out. It's useless if it is your only Pokémon out, because Messenger would essentially be a forfeit.

I don't know, but i'm sure theres at least one pokemon with an attack which lets you search your deck for a pokemon (that is a basic).

If not, you could use a dud card like Poliwag... 1 energy search your deck for a basic and put it into your hand.

Just a quick question, are legend pieces classified as a pokemon? If they are, pidgey could be the optimal starter for decks based around legends. Also for decks wanting to run absol prime in decks like king buzz could use pidgey's attack and still utilize absol's body (which is the only real reason you would run it anyway).

Legend pieces are classified as non-evolved pokemon That's it. Not basic, not evolution.

Pidgey being an 'optimal' starter is a bit much though. I'd prefer a (for example) stantler to search for a vulpix and a tepig to set up for when RDL comes out.

All of these needs energies to perform attack, but Cleffa is enough good, because it can not be attacked when it sleeps and you flip tails all the time. :p

It can be okay, but hey, Call for Family helps a lot more. And besides, it's a dead draw late-game.
