Ruling Placement of Energy cards on the table

Earlier today, I remembered something: At one of the prereleases I went to about a year ago, one of the players I went up against insisted that I position my Energy cards so that the tops of the cards would show, the part that reads "Energy." He always got frustrated when I or anyone else he went up against would arrange Energy cards in any other way, even to the point of constantly reaching over to my side of the field and repositioning them the way he liked them. It was very rude, and it annoyed me. I never put my Energy like that. I put it so that the bottoms of them show, and if people are confused over how many Energies or what kinds they are, they're always free to look. But he was convinced his way was the only legal way.

So it got me to wonder: Is there any standard way to place Energy cards under a Pokémon? Is it preferable to put it so the tops show, like that guy? Is it preferable the way I've done it, with the bottom showing? I've seen some people put them sideways; is that preferred? Or is anything okay, as long as the quantity and types are clear?

(I found out that he's still playing in tournaments. He no longer criticizes people for their organization of cards, but he apparently still spends the other player's turn arranging, rearranging, and re-rearranging his own cards so they line up perfectly the way he likes them down to the micrometer. If anyone here has played against him, you will know exactly who I'm talking about.)

You are free to attach energy to your Pokemon any way you want. As long as players can tell how many, what type, and who they are attached to. I have seen players who just put the energy next to their pokemon, some who show the bottom, others who show the top. I prefer to show the top, or sometimes I put them to the top and to the side if it is a special energy.

Personally, I stick the energies next to the Pokémon in order of basic-to-special. Makes it easier to check the energy count, and it doesn't get mixed up when moving it around. Or maybe it does. NROmally it doesn't.

Okay, so any way is fine, as long as it's legible. I guess that's why he shut up since then.
