Hello there! Welcome to the world of Pokémon Playthroughs! This thread is a place for people to learn about and discuss the various types of Playthroughs that members create and participate in on PokéBeach.
What is a Playthrough?
A Playthrough is a thread where a user can document their adventures while playing through one of the many Pokémon games. Something of a cross between a journal and a story, the creator takes on the role of a trainer and shares their tale as they capture Pokémon, defeat other trainers, and eventually overthrow the evil team and beat the Pokémon League Champion. Often, they will follow a specific set of rules or challenges while they play the game, to make the story and the game more exciting and fun for them and their readers, and also to give those readers the opportunity to contribute or discuss.
Types of Playthroughs
Although anyone playing through a game can make a playthrough with their own adventures, most commonly a playthrough author will have a theme to their story. Here is a selection of some of the most common:
Nuzlocke: The most common playthrough. Nuzlockes are runs designed to be more difficult than a standard playthrough and also to increase the bond between a trainer and his Pokémon. Although there are many ways to play a Nuzlocke and a large number of extra potential rules (mostly designed to increase the difficulty), the main two rules that define a Nuzlocke run are: 1) You may only catch the first Pokemon you encounter in each new area you explore, and 2) If one of your Pokemon faints, it is dead, and you must release (or permanently box) it. This type of playthrough originates from Pokémon Hard Mode, an ongoing comic run by the person to create the initial rule set. Some common additional rules can be found on The Nuzlocke Wiki or elsewhere on the web.
Choose My Team (CMT): CMT runs are playthroughs where the creator makes his team based on Pokémon chosen, and nicknamed, by the community. Because of the community involvement, readers enjoy seeing how the Pokémon they selected fare. Pokémon are often chosen based on strength (or lack thereof) or personal preference.
Mono-Type: A mono-type run is a playthrough where the creator uses only Pokémon of a certain type, as if they were a Gym leader. This adds an extra level of difficulty and strategy because you have to account for your types weaknesses and still build a good enough team to complete the game.
Wonderlocke: A variant of Nuzlocke that's new to 6th gen. Instead of using the first Pokémon encountered on a given route, the creator instead immediately uses Wonder Trade to trade the Pokémon they caught for a mystery Pokémon from the internet. Because of the randomness factor of Wonder Trades, Wonderlockes are a mixed blessing; will you get a team of legendaries and 5 IV starters, or a team of Lv. 3 Weedles? Okay, maybe the second is more likely, but still.
