'Pokemon Go' Augmented Reality Smartphone Game Announced for 2016!

My my... I wonder how they'll actually pull Pokemon GO off. The trailer looks more CG than the showing of the real gameplay. :/

A video game that makes me go outside? I wonder how many types I could just find in my living room instead.... >_>

I'm not crying, I'm just having a happy moment inside my brain. Now if you'll excuse me I'll be screaming the word "YES" to the point where the person I just traded with in california can hear me.

I wonder how many people are going to faceplant or be hit by a car while running to get a Pokemon.

I mean, imagine seeing a Purrloin at the bottom of a cliff. I'd jump without hesitation.

Uh, I really don't know. They don't seem to have thought about how stupid it would appear to be standing outside with a phone in your hand. How popular was Ingress? I didn't see it in Australia. However, I am part of the Geocaching community, which involves using the GPS system on the phone to find a little treasure thing hiding around in the environment. You do wave your phone around and manage to do it casually, although it's easier (just glance, walk, search, rinse/repeat). This seems more like you need to use your phone more, so you'll look a bit weirder. Although, it does sound fun to walk into a forest where noone's around and search for Pokemon that way. n.n;

It may just be me, but I don't think I got how that badge thingamajig is supposed to work. You still need your phone majorly, which could be a problem.

Also, I read an interview recently about the intent of Pokemon: the dimension of Pokemon is apparently supposed to be entirely separate to the 'real word' as such. This sorta defies that. Ugh, I don't know. There is so many potential positives and even more potential negatives.

The two quick in-game clips at the end of the trailer don't look anything like the rest of it. I mean, that's to be expected, since trailers don't actually show real stuff these days. But I think it's going to be less "Mewtwo doing an aerial roundhouse kick to Pikachu in Times Square" and more "Pokemon Snap 2: IRL Edition".

Still, scouring a forest for a Butterfree or roaming the ocean shore for a Kingler or strolling through a putrid landfill for a Muk sounds like a ton of fun.

I DO NOT CARE ABOUT PEOPLE'S WORRIES, THIS IS THE CLOSEST WE WILL GET TO POKEMON FOR THE OCULUS FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS, SO WE BETTER DAMN WELL APPRICIATE IT!!

likely wont happen tell version 2 or so but Microsoft hololens support could make it pretty awesome

I don't think I've gotten this close to feeling sick from a pokemon announcement before (oh wait, shuffle was close). Those usually bring joy :c

"Pokemon in the real world!!!"

No thanks. That is not what I want to see, at least not right now and definitely not on smartphones...
Gamefreak has been continuously creating a "better" or let's say utopian world specifically for Pokemon to inhabit. You can't just put Pokemon into this dump and call it a day.
I have that image in my head of a rich kid looking for an AR-pikachu that's hiding somewhere next to a homeless person, and the trailer only made it worse for some reason.
Granted, the trailer doesn't actually show us any worthwhile footage of the actual gameplay, so for all I know, they might have come up with clever execution of the idea.. but let's get back to what with DO see.

-Pikachu
Okay, sure, it's the mascot..
-Caterpie
Oh no, please don't..
-Chaizard
I know where this is going...
-Clefairy/Bulbasaur/Magikarp/Nidoran/Eevee..
goddamnit -___-
-Snorlax/Gyarados
inb4 Mewtwo I guess?
-Geodude/Blastoise/Arbok/Marowak
-Mewtwo
le epic wow showdown in times square

The level of genwun in this is outrageous.

Screw this smartphone casual genwun pandering nonsense.

I just hope the interaction with the main games has minimal consequences.

"The game is free to play but will have in-app purchases"
well, surprise surprise.

Masuda, Ohmori, get off your asses and finish the damn Battle Frontier.

I need to wash my mouth after this.

EDIT:

It's just been a matter of time though till they did something like this.
I mean, it's a huge marketing device and they've tested the waters with 2 F2P microtransaction games in the past year.

And sure, it's very profitable for them, but looking at "how much development necessary"-"how much money it makes" ratio too much, instead of prioritizing on making a great game, is what kills quality game development.

It's likely just the approach they went with for this specific trailer, but as a main-games core fan and fan of all generations, this sure as heck managed to make me feel alienated in my favourite franchise.

Hmm, this seems like a much more in-depth off-shoot of Dream Radar. I'm actually cool with this in concept. I liked Dream Radar, and being able to directly battle/trade within this seems like a nice touch, especially if there's a reason to. (Also, I expect the Generation 1 thing is probably just to limit the initial pool of Pokemon, they will probably expand it unless it's a complete flop.) I just hope they're careful with how they handle this, and don't, say, encourage kids to run out in the middle of the street because they saw a Lugia.

We'll see if this turns out well or not I guess. I suspect the big legendary events, etc. will be harder to pull off IRL. It's not like entire streets will whip out their smartphones to take on a Groudon in reality. (Then again, that might have just been a dramatization, maybe it's not proximity-based, just based on how many people around the world/in your region/etc. are fighting it.)

From a mechanics standpoint, I expect this will be similar to Dream Radar, and will probably allow transfer of what you catch. Perhaps it will, like Dream Radar, give access to Hidden Abilities we don't currently have, too, which would be nice.

This game could've had so much potential, if they didn't just stick it to Android/IPhone. I don't have any of those, and I have no plans of getting any of them either.

It could even have been a cool way of marketing the next real Pokémon game if they would've made it for 3DS.
Imagine this: You have your 3DS in your pocket/bag and that bracelet on your wrist. You are out for a walk, when suddenly it tells you there's a Pokémon nearby. You open your 3DS and activates the camera! And, voila, a Pokémon appears on your screen... a completely unknown, new Pokémon (one that will appear in the next game). And you could catch it...!
Wouldn't that have so much cooler...?

This looks like such a cool product. It's a shame I don't have a smartphone (I can't afford one right now), because I'd be purchasing this in a heartbeat when it does come out.

I'm stuck with a really old flip phone because of that whole 'lack of money' thing.

I don't get that either.

The logical thing to do would have been to develop such a game for both, the 3DS, and smartphones at the same time.
That way you can use it as marketing to suck in people who don't have a 3DS, but not alienate the actual fans who decide to rather invest into nintendos actual handheld than a fancy smartphone. Like wtf?

I wonder...

Can it sync to the Global Link over internet?

If so, can a 3DS Game Sync to the global link to get the smartphone pokemon from the GL delivery lady?

^ If it cannot go over the internet and sync to PGL, then I'm afraid that's a signal that Gen 7 could either be incompatible with Gen 6 bar the next-gen version of pokemon bank(ala Gen 3 vs. Gens 2 and 1), and/or the smartphone game could be a precursor to a possible NX version of pokemon go!...

^ If it's incompatible w/ 3DS directly, and if they're not planning some NX update, then this better not have the same battle mechanics as the main 3DS series, or else this will be a game in which people could be frustrated on some counts: how can you trade and battle with 3DS owners? Start from scratch under a separate system? Not being able to trade or battle between phone and 3DS, or vice versa?

^ Please recognize that separate systems increase the need for more resources to manage such systems, as well as possible fan frustrations, TPCi. I hope you know what you're doing with this...

EDIT: The separate system model worked w/ PTCGO and the main apparatus of the TCG, so regardless of my thoughts, I'm curious to see if it will work on the VG department. PGo! looks like the VG's PTCGO, only that the systems involved w/ PGo! look like they are more in the VG department, rather than the TCG...

If I have to travel to another country to catch my favorite pokemon, I'll be awfully upset.
It would have been nice if they actually showed gameplay, like how trading and battling works and how we can add friends (if we can add people), etc. I assume it's too early in development to be shown.

Well, it's interesting. Definitely catering to the older fans whom would rather just carry their smartphone than both 3DS and phone. Plus, look at all those Kanto 'mons. It's crawling with nostalgia! I'm pretty excited for it.

Some people on R/Pokemon pointed out that the game probably won't use the camera, as that would devastate the phone's battery, and also because most phone's lack the power and hardware to make Pokemon sprites interact with the environment in the camera. The 3DS has two powerful cameras that are capable of rendering their pictures into 3D, and to be fair, Pokemon Dream Radar didn't actually have the little Thundurus interact with your living room. The Pokemon in that game just flew across the image. Still, I'm super excited for this announcement. It's an app game that features Pokemon! That trailer was absolutely beautiful, and reminded me why I love this franchise so much. Seeing Snorlax and Gyarados duel on the bridge, crashing furiously into the lake as they battled was exhilarating, but we would be wise to remember that that definitely won't be what the final game will look like. Most likely, you'll get an alert and open the app, all to be faced with a Pokemon, standing in the environment you're holding your phone in. I hope they look better than those screencaps of Pikachu and Charizard do, but even if they don't, who cares? New Pokemon game! Seriously, this commercial reminds me of that old commercial where Pokemon are running from gameboy to gameboy, treading across a link cable like its a tight rope. I'm curious to see how it will interact with the main series games as well. Could that go beyond sending captured Pokemon to your Bank account?
