Pokemon Ranger Discussion Thread

I'm actually a... MAGIC MAAAAAAAAAAN!!
Member
I didn't see one, so I'm making a new one.
2 topics:
1. When are we going to see a Gen 5 PR?
2. Guardian Signs seems a bit unfair when you 100%. Here's why:
*after hours of filling dex, Lugia fight occurs.*
Man, that was hard. But at least the mission's over. Since this was the last mission, and I have about 250 more Ranger Points to obtain before fully upgrading my Styler, this HAS to have some extreme payout!
*gained 50 ranger points*
WHAT?! Wait...
*big Dex Complete cutscene occurs*
I knew it! Prof Hastings is going to give me 200 points to...
*cutscene ends*
NOTHING?! Wait a second...
*sudden remembering that every time you 'S rank' a Pokemon, you get 1 RP*
...
*flips table and vaults self out of 5 story window*

The Ranger games are okay, but it's starting to get to the point where it's only really good for being a glorified event distribution system. Maybe it's because of how the combat works, it's getting a bit repetitive and stale. And Guardian Signs I felt was too much like Shadows of Almia, aside from getting to ride legendaries and stuff (which is an awesome but fairly pointless gimmick). And the past missions seem like a good idea, but the fact that they're hard to play except through local wireless absolutely kills them. The Ranger games need some sort of change, something to make them feel more unique and fun. As for when 5th gen Ranger is coming out, IDK. New Mystery Dungeon and new Ranger games typically release about a few months apart, and since we've got a 5th gen Mystery Dungeon coming out sometime down the line, I imagine a new Ranger game isn't that far behind. But if not soon, I don't think we'll get one at all 5th gen, since this gen seems to be coming to a close.

Ah, I love the Ranger games. They're probably my favorite side-series overall. Ranger 1 is easily the weakest, or in some eyes, the strongest, what with the all-loops-need-to-be-done-in-one-go thing, but even then, I still enjoyed it (yeah, it wouldn't help that it's been 6 six years since I've played it...). Shadows of Almia improved on the original in many ways, and did wonders in increasing the scope of the game. You want more characters, boom. More partners, boom. Side quests, boom. But Guardian Signs polished it to a tee. Maybe I'm a noob, but I never saw the Societea or Dolce's Island's demise coming. Multiplayer was kinda cool, even if I never found anyone to try it out with (and didn't know that it could be done in singleplayer x.x). Yeah, I wouldn't saw the title played as big of a role as it could have, but calling Ho-Oh at will will always get me.

It's a valid complaint to say that there isn't much to do after completing the browser in the games (yeah, there's no point in getting your styler to level 100 in Guardian Signs...), but everything up to that point is great. The Ranger series and the Mega Man Battle Network (and Star Force!) series share the distinction that they weren't the greatest-selling or received games, but one thing I think they both attract me with is their music. Man, the music. From the familiar greats of the Go-Rock Quads theme to the epic stuff of riding a beast or encountering Arceus, the music was great throughout. I will maintain that this is one of the greatest field themes of any game.

Ah yes, I did enjoy 1's difficulty a bit more, although some of the bosses were unfairly difficult IMO (I'm looking at you, Salamence and Steelix). Shadows of Almia still had some difficulty. I think I struggled on Rampardos initially, but I think I won using Steel types. And Drapion. My God, Drapion. I had so much trouble with him that I had to start over and go back and get Cranidos just to beat him. Guardian Signs, meanwhile, felt too easy. I breezed right through it without having trouble on any boss whatsoever. I don't think I even lost once.

Probably the number one thing that annoyed me in GS is that after 100%ing SOA (and chasing Celebii around for 5 hours) that you can only have 1 partner. How cool would it be to have a partner from each type, each with its own instrument? EX: Bongo Swinub, Flute Whismur, Piano Skorupi...
...
Wait this is stupid. LOL.
(but I can see Whismur playing a flute...)

Agreed, they should go back to having one partner per type next game. It adds a strategic element to the game. For instance, I went with my friend's suggestion to use Cranidos against Drapion, I don't think I'd have ever won without it.

OMG yeees. Drapion was a pain. Ramparados was easy once I learned you could get 1 or 2 circles in between rocks. Heatran was a pain, though. And I was a bit young when I played Almia, and the idea of having one little partner for each type in the garden was adorable.
Also, why can't we have another Wailord to ride on?
WAIT
WHAT ABOUT RIDING ON KYOGRE?!
OH YEEEEEEAH!

I remember playing those games. I don't know how I managed to get through the first one where they didn't have health bars like they did in later games. The Charizard near the end of the game was tough as was Drapion.

Yes. Dear Arceus yes. That would be awesome. Kyogre could be like Latios, you can ride it throughout the seas to navigate the region.
