Hello,

So, I have been considering getting into Pokémon. I used to play when I was in elementary school, still have some of my base set cards in an old box. Once in awhile I get the itch to play a tcg, while I usually sate by dropping 1000 bucks on Magic the Gathering (I have been in and out of magic about 8 times, about as much as WoW.) Recently, I have been looking at Pokémon to switch things up, but I am not sure where to start. I like the styles of the cards, and I like the strategy behind it, which is different from MTG. I also like that you can basically use your physical cards in the online variant. Not sure if that holds true for all Pokémon products, but seems to be the case with decks and such (anything is better than having to have 2 distinct collections like with MTG; PTCGO seems like just another way to get more games in). With Magic, I have a good grasp of what sets to look at for which format, usually Type 2 (standard). WIth Pokémon, I am not really sure where to start. I get that they go by the generations of games, but they are so many renditions of Black and White and a couple of XY that I am not sure what is legal and what isn't.

So, how would you guys recommend I get started? I must admit, like 90 percent of the fun for me comes from opening boosters. Its an addiction, and honestly its probably one of my favorite things to do. I am aware that it may not be the best way to get situated, but I do love it. I haven't bought a theme deck for a tcg since I was a kid getting into magic for the first time, and Id imagine that they don't hold up to well in this game as well. I guess it boils down to what the best methods for obtaining cards would be, and which sets to invest in.

Thanks for your time.

Probably a good idea to invest in X/Y stuff for now. That stuff is guaranteed to be around for at least 2 years.

As for the online stuff, it depends on what you get in your boosters. Just like the real game, so your collections will be different.

For example online I have about 4-5 Ghestis, however in real cards I have none.

There are many types of cards and it would depend on what type of deck ou would like to play as well as your playstyle as to what cards you should buy. It also depends on how competitive you plan on being, there are fun decks that are pretty cheap to make like weavile eggecute which i think is 60-70 $ from scratch. There are also very expensive decks like blastoise decks with black kyurem ex and tropical beach which would cost around 600$ to make I think.
