Ughh! I know, right? We get BCR giving us reprints of hoh-hum trainers, and now, finally we get da good stuff! Virbank Gym, Escape Rope, Ether, Bicycle, Colress Machine/ Plasma Energy. Woooooo doggy! Finally a great set to make a Prerelease out of.
Technically, I was late to the earlier Prerelease and battled in the Booster Draft instead, but the battles still play out in the same way, so it works.
Before the Tournament:
I head to Kyoto Japanese Restaurant and fuel up on sushi before the tournament! MM! I think I overdid it though... 2 long rolls with smelt roe, and tamago nigiri.... yeesh, next time, its one long roll, and one nigiri.
My First Booster Draft
I collect my 6 packs, and one of the more experienced players goes over the rules: Open the pack, pick one card to keep, then pass to the adjacent player, and so on until all the cards have been selected. I get some major boss stuff!! Victini EX Colress, Plasma Energy, Colress Machine, Hypnotoxic Laser, and lots of Phanpy/ Donphan <3 yesss, he's back. I also get the ACE SPEC, Dowsing Machine, oh yeah, got the competitive staple, right there. I'm so excited! There were a few times where I was the last one to pick a card, and I didn't have much time to shift copies of the same card together for easy viewing... I ended up keeping 5 Phanpy x/.
A bathroom break later, I start assembling my Deck: Phanpy/Donphan, Durant (both of them) Giratina, Heatmor, Victini EX, Patrat, Watchog, and Rotom.
Round 1: Versus Cool Water Guy with Articuno EX
This guy was pretty epic at building a consistent Deck: He got Manaphy, the whole Lotad family, and horror of horrors for me; Articuno EX, with Plasma Energy!!
It was hardly a contest. I energy droughted most of the time, and either way, he hit both of my Donphan for weakness, and then knocked out Giratina and Heatran for the win.
0-1
Round 2: Versus Experienced League Leader Dude!
This was a fun battle, ah! Its so nice to battle with a familiar face. He's been playing the Pokémon TCG for 5 years, now.
His main Pokémon that helped him fight was Garbodor! I slowly
whittled his health down with Heatmor's Luring Flame, and Poison Hypnotic Beam! Then, I finished him off with Victini EX's Intensifying Burn. The rest of his Pokémon were Grass types like Combee, so it was quite a simple win at that point!
1-1
Round 3: Versus Witty Pokédad
Or was he a Poké-Uncle? I dunno. Another fun battle, anyway. He had Zapdos EX, so I felt like I was in for a real challenge! He also had Heatmor, Galvantula, and Watchog. He made a critical mistake when he used Colress Machine to fetch a Plasma Energy and attach it to Watchog instead of Zapdos EX...
I was able to KO his other Pokémon thanks to Donphan's Spinning Turn, Hypnotoxic Beam, and Victini EX's 1 Retreat Cost! He did manage to Luring Flame my own Heatmor though, but that was a minor setback, as I had plenty of Energy this round. I also flipped a lot of heads on the Burn, so I was safe in that regard, too. Only got 1 Tails. Time was called at my 1 Prize left to his... 3 or 4.
After the battle, an adjacent player asked him why he didn't Colress Machine for Plasma Energy to Zapdos EX, and then he realized Zapdos EX was a Team Plasma Pokémon. He was focusing more on looking at the card's border, rather than the Plasma insignia. Yeesh... I kinda feel I swindled him since I didn't point out the mistake before he made it... kinda reminds me of the Game Grumps GUTS episode... oh gosh
He says he was already too far behind, either way, and depending on if I'd get (R) Energy to use Intensifying Burn, he was probably right.
2-1
Round 4: Versus The Other Paul
Heh, this guy's name is also Paul! He kinda looked like me, too! I left some of my dice, Poision/Burn counters, and Machoke figurine a few chairs right of me, and made a Zelda CD-i reference about it before getting it back after the match, which was pretty short.
He leads with a lone Lunatone, and I lead with a lone Durant (the one with Gnaw) I forget who goes first, but he only attacked once before I KO'd him in three turns: 1st turn, attach Energy and Eviolite, and use Hypnotoxic Beam, Poison, no Sleep. Poison, 2nd turn, attach Energy, Gnaw, Poison, he attaches his 2nd Energy and attacks for 10. Poison, Gnaw, Poison, and that's game!
3-1
A few seconds later I grab my stuff. Great !
I think we only had four rounds since a player dropped out in the middle. I placed third! That's awesome, *flex*.
I get two more booster packs as a prize. I pulled another Colress. Weezing, Amoongus and Cobalion EX FA as Rares!! Woooooaaaawwww!!
After all that, some guy wants to trade something for my Pokémon Catcher. Naturally I get a little nervous about that. I do technically have 5 Catchers but... I remember making an awkward, sad trade of Catcher in the past, because mine was in poor condition, and I was feeling generous.
My dad shows up while we're trying to trade and we bicker a bit in public *sigh* for like the billionth time in my life, and he starts frantically picking up small card stacks, and putting them in my plastic bag, and he almost takes some of my trade partner's cards!! Arrgh. He was antsy because he usually expects to leave immediately after he arrives to pick me up...
I'll admit, I can act rather petty and selfish when I talk to him, so I know I've got issues too.
*AHEM*
That's how it all went down!
Props:
Getting a lot of walking, fresh-air, and sunlight in the morning and early afternoon today.
First Booster Draft!
Saved a bunch of money thanks to the luck gods! Dowsing Machine, Victini EX, Hypnotoxic Laser, Cobalion EX FA, ohhh yeaaahh!
Most Players used multiple Pokémon types and Energy types! That's always more fun than just one. Heh .
Victini EX's low retreat cost.
Donphan's Spinning Turn costs (F). Kinda nostalgic.
Hypnotoxic Laser is generally boss.
Me: Where's my stuff? I'td be great if I could grab my stuff!
Experienced League Leader Dude: Your sword is enough! <-------- This.
Me: *grabs his stuff*
I feel great. I grabbed my stuff ^.==.^.
Referee/Judge: Okay, so Paul beat Paul in this match? You're telling me Paul played Paul? Okay, that's cool.
Plasma Storm is much more palatable than Boundaries Crossed! To be fair though, we did get Keldeo/Blastoise, Landorus EX, Skyla, and Computer Search back then, at least.
Lot's of awesome fun!
Slops: Overeating, under-exercising, getting an intense cold sickness... just being so physically sickly, weak, and getting fatter, really fatter. Argh! I'm sick of being fat.
Bickering with my dad in public for the billionth time.
Almost stealing cards.
That moment when my opponent didn't recognize Zapdos EX was a Plasma Pokémon *bites index finger lightly*...
Okay. Bye guys! Hope you have fun reading this as I did writing this ^.==.^ .
