RE: Regigigas EX (ND #99) {3/25/12}

I would like to see this card get some solid reviews, so I am going to leave it for another day.

1. How does this card stand on its own (analyze the HP, attacks, Abilities, etc. of the card)?

Regigigas seems like a card that can do somewhat well on its own (but not really, as it will need something to power up (see section 2 of post)). It has 180 HP, two high energy attacks, and a very heavy retreat cost; no wonder Regigigas can be colossal. The first attack, for a DCE and a colorless, does 60. You have the option, however, to add the damage by 20; if you do, Regigigas does 20 to himself. The second attack combos with the first attack. For two DCEs, it does 50 plus 10 more damage for each damage counter on Regigigas. Ideally, you do 80 with the first attack over and over again until you have enough damage to deliver finishing blows with the second attack. This, however, isn't always a wise idea. Sure Regigigas has monstrous HP that can allow Raging Hammer to reach great heights, but some players can take advantage of the added damage easily by knocking it out (if it has enough damage), and then they took prize cards because it's an EX. Therefore, at most, you'll probably do 2-3 Giga Powers to be able to at least 2HKO everything else with the second attack.

As for weakness, he is weak to the {F} type, a weakness shared with virtually all other {L} and some {C} Pokemon alike. This makes him weak to Terrakion. Terrakion can one shot it immediately after Regigigas KOs something (if Regigigas does not have an Eviolite attached), so that is another reason why Regigigas should be played carefully. Overall, I think Regigigas is a good card that just needs to be played right.

2. What cards, if any, does this card combo with?

Because of Regigigas's high energy cost, you can't just rely on DCEs to power it up. You need a partner to power it up quickly too. One good example can be Celebi Prime. With a Skyarrow Bridge, you can abuse Celebi really easily. Pull out Celebi in the active slot, use the Poke-power to attach a {G} energy to Regigigas, retreat, pull out 'gigas himself, attach a DCE, and presto! You can now use the first attack easily. You can even get a fourth energy on Regigas if you pull out another Celebi instead of Regigigas, use the power again, and play Switch.

It could even work with Eelektrik. Attach a DCE to Regigigas and make sure there is a {L} in the discard pile. Use Eelektrik to attach the lightning energy to Regigas, and once again you can attack with Regigigas easily.

Eviolite is a trainer card that works well with Regigigas. Attach the tool to Regigigas, and any damage done to it is reduced by 20. This is useful in many instances. One, you don't get the damage backlash from Giga Power when doing 80 instead of 60. Two, you are not one-shoted by Terrakion; they would need two PlusPowers in order to KO you this way. Three, you are essentially giving Regigigas 200 HP, which makes him harder to KO in any instance in general.

3. What role does/could this card have in the metagame?

This card has found its way into one very good deck right now as a tech: CMT. CMT will commonly abuse Regigigas as a tech for the mirror. Use Celebi to power up Regigigas early in the game; then, start hitting away with Regigigas himself. You can attach an Eviolite to him too in order to make him harder to KO. From there, you can hit away for 80 a turn, and if it has enough damage, you could even utilize the second attack often. Because of his attacks, he can 1HKO-2HKO most Pokemon against mirror CMT (namely Celebis, Tornaduses, Shaymin, and Mewtwo if it has enough damage). Regigigas is also useful against anything in the early game in general, when everything is usually low in HP.

4. Give it a rating (out of 10), and explain why you have given it that rating.

I would give Regigigas EX an 8/10. It is definitely a very impressive card. With so many options to power it up, it can be a force to be reckoned in the early game. The high HP can even make it work as a late game attacker as well. The only problem is that its an EX, and it costs two prizes if it is KOd. Not only that, but the weakness to Terrakion is a pain. If you don't have an Eviolite attached, Regigigas can easily be revenge KOd. Therefore, he should be somewhat carefully, but if you know how to use him well, he can really help you out in many games.
