Returning After A Decade

i've played competitive tcg when this game came out years and years ago (and i was actually pretty good back then) but now i've seen the landscape has drastically changed, and watching the streams of the recently concluded world championships, it made me cringe but that itch just came back. i want to start re-learning this game, though the basics i know well.

i just wanna ask what deck for the upcoming format (BW-on is it?) is easy to play for a returnee/newbie like me? i'm actually eyeing Darkrai-Hydreigon for the upcoming Battle Roads but like what I said, i need to really get re-acquainted with the game before planning to really compete. is Zekeels an easy deck to play? Comments and advice are more than appreciated :)

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

Play Gartaria (Garchomp/Altaria), it is very easy to play.

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

what's the strategy to that deck and are there any good lists?

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

Strategy of Garchomp/Altaria (Fluffychomp)

Get out up to 4 altarias on the bench, and with their flight song garchomp's attacks do 20 more damage times each altaria. So with 4 altarias on the bench, garchomps attacks do 80 more damage, etc.
Use garchomp's 'Mach cut' to discard the opponent's special energies as well as dealing 140 damage, and Dragonblade if you come up against an EX Other than Mew for 180.
(180 Will kill anything in the metagame except large cloaked EXs.)

Basically, Just use Altaria for support and Garchomp for offence. Also, Using Emolge DREX As a starter helps get out Gibles and Swablus. Use Dragon Call gabite and Sand attack Gible.

I don't know of any lists, but check http://google.com/.

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

thanks Reshiwott! I think I'll start with Garchomp-Altaria then! I'll just ask around what good lists are there for this deck.. If someone knows maybe they can tell me..

Oh and if anyone knows a good list for Darkrai-Terrakion BW-on?

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

Nobody likes Darkrai/Terrakion BW-On.
But Yeah, I'd recommend Gartaria. My list isn't quite nailed down yet, so you'd be better off using another one. Good Luck though!

and Reshiwott, you forgot Wailord.

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

Oh okay, thanks Puff.. I guess I'll just wait and snoop around for a bit til someone shows up I guess..

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

We actually have quite a few Garchomp builds in our Deck Garage that you could look at.

If lists are your primary focus, I would suggest perusing the Deck forum in general and form your own personal lists after trying different things out. I don't (and never) have believed in spoon-feeding lists when there are many resources in this forum for everyone's disposal.

dmaster out.

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

oh okay..

have tried both gartaria and darkrai/hydreigon and iunno, maybe i have bad draws with gartaria..

gartaria- 1-4
darkrai/hy- 3-1

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

I returned to the Pokemon TCG this summer as well (after not playing/collecting since Base Set was released). I jumped in head first and have been attempting to learn everything that I possibly can. I have also done a good amount of play testing with my girlfriend and friend. If you have the time to spend on Pokemon TCG forums and reading articles related to the game (eg. Six Prizes) you will learn a lot of useful information very quickly.

I would suggest playing Darkrai/Hydreigon if you can get the strategy and a list nailed down. The list is pretty tight aside from a few possible techs so you shouldn't have much of a problem! In my opinion it is a better play than Garchomp/Altaria because it can tank very well (moving energy off to heal using max potion) and deals a good amount of damage (to both the opponent's Active Pokemon and their bench). I apologize if you're unsure of what some of those cards do but if you read a good Darkrai/Hydreigon article (or list), you will figure it out!

I hope this helps! :p

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

^ Indeed. Garchomp/Altaria is a little bit more fragile, and against other Dragon-type decks, it's difficult to stand on two feet all of the time because you need to be consistently pumping out Garchomp every turn. It's kinda tough to do that with a lack of search and Smeargle nowadays, and a lot goes down to what kind of cards you draw. Gartaria is still good, but it's not great. If you don't get a T1 Emolga or a T2 Gabite, the game is pretty much over for you.

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

I agree with you two..

After two days play-testing both, I find darkrai-hydreigon much easier. I can set up quite fast as well and get darkrai powered up fast. even against that garbodor deck it can stand on its own (in my brief experience) if you have a good hand plus hydreigon can also attack..

with fluffychomp i'm also starting to get the hang of it but if you get a bad hand and bad draws for say 2 turns you're screwed. even if i set up fast i find it hard to maintain in late game..

you guys know of other decks that are noteworthy to play-test?

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

Definitely go with Darkrai/Hydreigon. If you play it well and you pair that with a good list, you become unstoppable. If you want a good list I definitely would try http://google.com/. I believe they also have the winning Darkrai/Hydreigon list from the Japanese Battle Carnival.
Edit: Plus Gibles, Gabites, Emolgas, Swablus, and Altarias are all OHKO'd by Darkrai. Food for thought.

RE: returning after what, almost a decade?

yeah i'm starting to get the hang of it a little bit and i've been going over http://google.com/ atm, but I can't seem the list from Japan's Battle Carnival..

EDIT: nvm i think i found it. is it the b-league winning darkrai-hydreigon?
