Ok, so yeah, first BR (in the first weekend yay). It was pretty obvious to go with Dialga/Garchomp, a deck I've been playing all Summer and tweaking with Energy Exchanger and such even before Undaunted came out. So yeah, had to go with the deck I felt most comfortable with of course. XD I made two changes to the deck a week prior that I thought was better, and one of them definitely was. The other, not as much. So Registration at 11, left at 10:30 and got there on time. I saw a couple friends there already, but one could not make it unfortunately due to prior plans for the day. But whatever. Filled out decklist, deck checked, couple pre-tournament matches, talked to friends, and waited for the tournament to start in like forever. Apparently after what seemed about an hour, the printer didn't work. ._. Shouted out the names and good to go.
Round 1: Matt H vs. Ramon C.
Dialga/Garchomp vs. Gengar/Electrode
Ahh, how fitting we get paired up for Round 1. I've played his deck before and won handily, but for some reason this match just did not turn out that way. He starts with Voltorb to my Uxie with him going first and using Screech. I get Dialga and Psychic Restore (probably should have sent Uxie under, but I didn't think about what could happen next). He Evolves into Electrode and lays down Gastly with an Expert Belt and Energy and Trick Gas to KO my Uxie and send up a Spiritomb. From there, it was pretty much all over. Luckily, I had Bebe's in my hand ready for Dialga, but I just couldn't get going as fast as I needed too. He eventually got a Cursegar going doing 60 to me, 2HKO'ing me. I was forced to use Poke Turn and then snipe the Cursegar for 80 on the Bench. I Power Sprayed Level Down twice, but once those ran out, he Level Downed my Garchomp C Lv.X on the Bench with 80 damage on it from Shadow Skip and then a turn after, Dialga G Lv.X and then Shadow Skip to KO my Dialga G with an Expert Belt attached. That spells out gg.
Record: 0-1
Can't have too many more of those losses since it's a Top 4 Cut.
Round 2: Matt H vs. Alex W.
Dialga/Garchomp vs. Feraligatr
This match was far too quick. I started with two Garchomp C to his lone Totodile. He attacks with it while I attach and then he Evolves to Croconaw and attaches some more. I topdeck Energy Gain, attach again and Level Up to Garchomp C Lv.X to do 80 to the Croconaw, OHKO'ing it. Since it was his only Basic, I won.
Record: 1-1
So yeah, donks suck IMO, but I can't control them.
Round 3: Matt H vs. Anthony D.
Dialga/Garchomp vs. Luxray/Garchomp
At least I have my friend next to me this Round and he won a poster, so boost that luck baby. He ends up donking an Unown Q (with three Flash Bites) to win his round in like two seconds before I'm even able to comprehend what I'm about to do in my match. ._. I start with Dialga to his Luxray and he ends up Calling for two turns for two Garchomp C, a Bronzong G and IIRC Dragonite FB. I end up Flash Biting Luxray for one and find my other Crobat G is prized. Fail. I Second Strike for some minimal damage so Luxray has 40 on it. He gets Luxray GL Lv.X in his hand via SP Radar, and I know that's a huge threat if he gets it out. Instead of opting for Deafening for nothing (which I would normally love to do), since it doesn't do damage, I had to gogo Dialga to Second Strike again for a massive KO. Luxray is an absolute threat with that Resistance, srsly. So he eventually gets some Energy on Garchomp, Levels up and snipes my Garchomp C on the Bench. After that, I knew I needed to get Dragonite FB and another Garchomp C for more backup. I eventually got Expert Belt on Dialga G Lv.X which helped a ton. I was put in a corner where I needed to get Dragonite FB with the DCE that was on Dialga G Lv.X but I also needed to retreat with no Warp Energy in hand. I tried to Galactic Switch and he sprays preventing that for a turn. The next turn, I'm able to Galactic Switch the DCE to Dragonite FB and am forced to attach DCE to Dialga G Lv.X to retreat (God do I hate that more than probably anything in the world: manually retreating Dialga), attach Gain to Dragonite and start ripping holes with Mach Blow. The next turn I go back to Dialga that has 70 damage on it and start Remove Losting for prize after prize off Bronzong, Uxie, Azelf, Crobat, etc. I assume he was trying to get Energy for Garchomp C Lv.X (he had a Warp and a Gain on it) to KO my Dialga G Lv.X for two prizes somehow, but alas this was not meant to be. Remove Lost for the final prize, and gg.
Record: 2-1
So yeah, I was needless to say happy after that match. He went on to win the BR, and I turned out to be his only loss, so I guess that's my virtual prize for the day. Lunch Break, traded for Regular Dialga G and regular Uxie so I can finally have my true non-holo as I can have Dialga/Garchomp deck for real. Practice matches, and then my mom came with McDonald's for Lunch so I ate that and went back in time.
Round 4: Matt H vs. Quinn W
Dialga/Garchomp vs. Blaziken/Garchomp
I've played against a similar version of this deck before and more often than not I would lose based on speed and weakness. He starts with Jirachi to my Dialga and gets setup super fast (as every deck that starts with Jirachi should). I foolishly attach an Expert Belt to Dialga and don't Deafen and get a Blaziken's Jet Shoot to the freaking face for it and become behind in prizes and the exchange. I get out Uxie Lv.X to reply back and he gets a Garchomp C Lv.X+Crobat G to respond that. Later in the match, he Luring Flames Azelf and I have no idea why I didn't play Warp Energy down. I must have really had a lapse in my mind and I just couldn't think straight, but after a Jet Shoot to Azelf for the final prize, that was it.
Record: 2-2
Well, there's pretty much that. Almost no way I could make Top Cut unless there is divine intervention. I probably should have Christian Cut that last match, that could have been the way.
Round 5: Matt H vs. Michael M
Dialga/Garchomp vs. Charizard/Ninetails/Typhlosion
So this was Ramon's deck and the two times I played it there was just no way I could win. An aggro Typhlosion could discard Special Metals and DCE and they have drawpower to get cards quickly into hand. Luckily or unluckily for me, this was a new player who didn't know how to play the deck as good as Ramon. He starts with Vulpix, two Cyndaquil and Charmander. Oh joy, lots of basics. I can't remember what I start with (I think it was Garchomp C) and I KO Vulpix with a Claw Swipe and three Flash Bites. I then quickly get Garchomp C Lv.X going and sniping Charizard for 80 damage on the Bench and then Typhlosion for 80 damage on the bench, setting it up for Dialga to sweep. I get Dialga out with some Special Energies and no Belt but doing 80 with Remove Lost on literally everything. KO on Typhlosion and then Charizard, after it doing a measly 40 to me after Special Metals and locking the Body. I Power Spray Roast Reveal once, and then Firestarter. Late game, I Spray another Fire Starter, while continuing to do 80 to 2HKO the last Typhlosion for the game.
Record: 3-2
So yeah, there are quite a few people with the record of 3-2 and I don't think I'm able to squeeze it out in the Top 4. And sure enough, 5th place is my finisher. Aha, that elusive 5th place which is just one place away from 4th. I believe this is the second time in a BR, but oh well. Better luck next time. I stay and watch Ramon's Top Cut matches. He wins his Top 4 match and then loses in Top 2 to finish with Second Place. Not bad at all. There will be another time for Dialga to ride I'm sure of it.
