Well when I was playing Pokemon last Friday someone I was playing against told me when I was using Roseanne's Research that I have to get just 1 Basic Pokemon and 1 Basic Energy with it instead of getting 2 Basic Energies or 2 Basic Pokemon with it. I can do all three with Roseanne's right?

The card specifically says the word combination, so that means 2 of either one of 1 of each.

Also, you could just get one basic only or one energy only.

Just for further clarification on this, you could also get nothing.

You could get 2 basic energy, 2 basic Pokemon, or 1 basic Pokemon and 1 basic energy.

Incorrect. The card states:

Roseanne's Research said:
Search your deck for up to 2 in any combination of Basic Pokemon and basic Energy cards, show them to your opponent, and put them into your hand. Shuffle your deck afterward.

"Up to" does not include 0. So, you must search for at least 1 Basic Pokemon or Basic Energy...

You can fail a search.

The deck is not public knowledge, so you can choose to have those searches fail, even though there may be a card in the deck. You do not have to show your opponent anything. It is different if something says get a card from your deck, since it is public knowledge that there are cards in your deck.

This is the closest thing I could find in the Compendium too.

"Up to" actually includes 0. If I told you that you could have up to 3 slices of pizza, you can say that you won't take any. That's 0.

Also, the deck is known to yourself only. The opponent does not know whether the deck still has basics/energies or not. You can easily fail a search on purpose since your opponent doesn't know.

Here's what you can get:
Nothing
A Basic Pokemon
A Basic Energy
2 Basic Pokemons
2 Basic Energies
A Basic Pokemon and a Basic Energy

Right. Your opponent does not know what is in your deck. How could you take an energy or a Pokemon if you don't have any? The deck is not public, so they wouldn't know thus allowing them to get nothing, or failing the search.

You can read this if you want to...

But you're missing something.
For Claydol, you aren't searching your deck.
What you do with Claydol is public.
Let's say I use a Rosanne's.
I have one card left in my deck.
It is a Night Maintance.
How do I use Rosanne's and get something when I CANNOT?

I was not talking about the Roseanne's Research in my previous post. I'm just mentioning about the "Up to" issue in Pokemon...

Regardless of what you were talking about in your previous post, you're still wrong about Roseanne's Research. As others have previously stated, it IS perfectly legal to get absolutely nothing when you use Roseanne's Research.

Even when regarding the "up to" issue in Pokemon, your information is not complete. Cards like Roseanne's Research that say "up to" but involve your deck allow you to get anywhere from zero to two. The reason (as previously stated) is because your deck is not public knowledge so no one but YOU knows what's in or not in your deck. HOWEVER, as you mentioned, cards like Claydol and Night Maintenance that say "up to" mean that you HAVE to put at least one into your deck. The reason being is because for Claydol, the number of cards in your hand is public knowledge. Therefore, when you use Cosmic Power, you have to have at least one card in your hand to be able to use it. The same goes for Night Maintenance. Because your discard pile is public knowledge, you can't USE Night Maintenance unless you have at least one Pokemon or one Basic energy to put back into your deck.

To wrap it all up:
It is legal to use a card that searches through your deck/prizes(Azelf) and get ABSOLUTELY NOTHING because your deck/prizes are private knowledge that only YOU can know.

The "up to" is a ruling having to do with cards that search the discard/other public areas. If you are using a Night Maintenance then you must search for at least 1 card. However since your deck is unknown to the public then you may fail the search.

If you read Claydol, it says "if you do". If you didn't put any cards under your deck, you can't draw any.

My bad. I'll be more careful next time. I'm sorry if I have caused any confusion regarding this question... :)
