I don't expect there's any way for my son and I to login to the same TCGO account and play each other in Versus mode? I expect this won't work for two reasons: first, two people cannot simultaneously login to the same account and second, you can not choose a specific opponent in Versus mode. It would be nice if we could play each other online and even nicer if we could "share" the same collection of cards like we do with the paper cards.

No, unfortunately that doesn't work in PTCGO (and I wouldn't assume it would work in PTCG Live, either). You *can* choose specific opponents, not in Versus mode but in Friends matches (they don't give you coins or whatever, but they do let you play). But you can't choose yourself. 
My kids have kid accounts (they're attached to my account, and I control if they have friends linked etc.). Then I trade them things as needed - it's not too hard to manage that.
