Ruling Sharpedo EX - Primal Clash Energy Specific Question

Me and my buddy ran into an impasse regarding Sharpedo EX's "Jagged Fang" and the effects of the Fairy "Wonder Energy". For quickness sake, I'll just type out the relevant card text.

Sharpedo EX's Jagged Fang
"Discard an Energy attached to this Pokemon. Then, discard an Energy attached to your opponent's Active Pokemon."
Special Energy (Fairy): Wonder Energy
"Prevent all effects of your opponent's attacks, except damage, done to the Fairy Pokemon this card is attached to. (Existing effects are not removed.)"

Because Wonder Guard was attached to my Gardevoir, I didn't discard the Energy. My friend argued that since the effect was prevented, he no longer had to discard an Energy attached to his Sharpedo. I pointed out that because of the text in Wonder Energy (specific section is in bold), "Prevent all effects of your opponent's attacks, except damage, done to the Fairy Pokemon this card is attached to. (Existing effects are not removed.)", that he would still need to discard an energy card, as the effect prevention only happens on my end.

Specifically, I saw the text with Sharpedo's Jagged Fang, "Discard an Energy attached to this Pokemon." as a requirement of the card's attack. One that he would still have to follow, even though Wonder Energy prevents the effect from happening specifically to my Pokemon.

I'd be extremely grateful for anyone who could give us an answer on what would happen in this scenario. Would Sharpedo not lose an energy or does it still go through with that section of the effect?

You are correct. Sharpedo-EX discarding its own Energy is not stopped by Wonder Energy; however, the effect of having your Energy discarded is an effect of an attack that would be blocked by Wonder Energy.

End result: Sharpedo-EX's player discards an Energy attached to Sharpedo-EX.

Thanks! In the future, I'll make sure I post in the right area, sorry about that.

Thank you for answering! We've had similar disputes where we didn't know the exact outcome of situations like those, but your answer definitely cleared this one up. I rage quit the match because I didn't understand how my pal didn't get it, (and I was on a losing streak by three games lol) so I feel a bit less bad about it now.

Hey also I was looking here and wondering about if you used Hunt on a Pokémon with Wonder Energy? Would it be stopped?
